Anthony 38-O, behind a four touchdown attack by Dave Libardi. Drury scored five touchdowns, with the other one being scored by Mike Falcon on a 3 yd. plunge from scrimage. The Drury rushing attacks were well balanced as Libardi picked up 98 yds. on l l car- ries, while Mike Falcon and George Galli went 8 for 47 and 2 for 34 respectively. Defensively, Jammallo, Falcon and Crawford led the tenuous Drury defense, which allowed Mt. Anthony only 173 yards in total offense. Drury picked up their second win of the season by trouncing St. Joe of Pittsfield 34-O. Joe JammalIo's passing arm was in fine form as he completed 2 touchdown passes to Libardi in the first half, one for 33 and another for 42 yards. Jammallo scored a TD himself in the second half, and George Galli also crossed the goal line twice in the fourth quarter, once on a I9 yard pass from Bruce Johnson and once on a 3 yard plunge over the goal line. The Drury defense was fantastic, allowing St. Joe only 34 yds. rushing and 22 in the air. Coach Cirone said it was impossible to single-out any defensive standouts, and the entire defensive line did an excel- lent iob. Northampton's highly-touted wishbone offense stunned Drury 31-16 in the third game of the season. Drury misuses probably caused the loss as two fumbles and a blocked punt set up three Northampton TD's. Mike Falcon and Dave Libardi scored the two Devil TD's, and also led the Devil ground game with I28 and 42 yards respectively, while Jammallo completed 4 of 6 passes for 34 yards. The Devil defense was led by Co-Captains Crawford and Ghidotti, and Mike Falcon, Jim Simon, Bruce Johnson, and Joe Jammallo. Running back George Galli sustained a knee iniury in the game, which was to start a series of complications and put three sport athletes out of action for both football and basketball. Drury suffered it's second loss at the hands of Pittsfield, as the Generals beat Drury 20-6 in a night game at Wahconah Park. Drury was down I4-6 at the half, with what was to be their only TD, scored by Bruce Johnson on a 4 yd. run. Although the Devil offense was stymied, Coach Cirone had particular praise for the defense which he said was outstanding. Bruce Johnson, Dave Puppolo, Ron Chenail and Matt Crawford all excelled on defense. 1 ' i Co-Captains Matt Crawford and Gary Ghidotti 1 1 Drury played probably its best game of the year in losing to powerful Wahconah on Noel Field 20-12. Wahconah led at halftime 7-6, until the Devil offense came up with a TD on a perfect Jammallo to Puppolo pass which covered 33 yards. Two fumbles in the 3rd quarter bolted Drury's scoring drives. Drury's new wishbone offense worked very smoothly, prod- ucing a well-balanced running attack. Libardi went 17-87, Ghidotti 10-33, Jammallo 8 for 56 and Johnson 9-57. Drury's passing attack was also sound, as Johnson completed 5 passes in 9 attempts for 62 yds., and Jam- mallo was one for one for 33 yds. The Devil defense was led by Falcon and Johnson with the assistance of McKean, Dassatti, Thomann and Simon. Drury snapped a 3 game losing streak by squashing Monumeny Mt. 24- 0. Bruce Johnson played his best game of the year as he scored 3 TD's, and gained a total of 81 yards in 9 attempts. Joe Jammallo played his best game also, gaining 147 yards in only 16 carries to lead the Devil ground game. Ghidotti, Falcon, Jammallo and Dickenson paced the shut-out minded Drury defense. Drury fought hard but lost a 26-20 decision to Taconic in the 7th game of the year. Jammallo led the Devil ground gainers for the second game in a row, eating up 74 yds. of turf in 1 1 carries, while Johnson and Libardi both lugged for 38 yds. Johnson, Libardi, and Jammallo scored the three Devil TD's, with Libardi running over the goal line for the two extra points. Bob Dickenson, Mike Falcon, and Jammallo were the mainstays of the Devil defense. ln the tradition-filled, year ending Hoosac game, Drury lost a heart- breaker 12-8, after leading most of the way. With Drury ahead 8-6, and with only 1 :24 left on the clock, Hoosac's quarterback Steve Bondine com- pleted a desperation pass for a Hoosac TD. The entire lirst half of the game was a battle of tough defenses as the two teams went to the locker room with a scoreless tie. Jim Simon's 37 yard run early in the 3rd period set up Johnson's one yard run for the only Devil TD. Johnson then passed to Libardi for a 2 pt. conversion. Hoosac then scored a quick TD but missed the extra points, leaving the score 8-6, where it remained until the game ruining terror by Bondine. Jim Simon played a great game for Drury, gain- ing 74 yards in 12 carries. Libardi gained 48 in 13 carries. The Drury defense was magnificent, led by Ghidotti, Crawford, Falcon, Johnson, Markland and Jamallo. sf.. H e- V- . Q---.H 1 f -. - fl .. The 1972 Drury Cross Country Team posted an excellent record of only ten wins and four losses. The team finished third in the highly competitive Berkshire County Cross Country League. Despite the fact that they were the smallest school in their division, the team finished a respectable seventh of seventeen at the Western Massachusetts Meet held at Amherst College. The team was by far and away the best in Drury's history, and credit can not be solely given to any one individual for the remarkable change. Junior Bob Can- nity trained all summer long to rise from 5th to lst place, and win IO dual meets. Larry Potvin returned to his fine form of last year and Rich Taskin and Pete Demeo came through with some clutch finishes to win close victories. Art Wilk and Dale Beverly were much improved from lost year, and the performance of soph- omore Ed Flaherty was surprisingly good. All in all, it has to be noted as the premier year of Drury Cross- Country since it began six years ago. Cross C 0 un tr Homecoming ,-V X C XX X ,, .f V ' ' . .L M 3. That night, the annual Powder Puff Football Game was held at Noel Field. Several varsity football players acted as coaches, while the varsity football coaches officiated the game. The sophomore-iunior team wan the battle. On Friday, November 5th, the Hoosac Valley pep rally was held. That night, the Snake dance was conducted, with students marching from Drury down to Noel Field, ending with the burning of the Hoosac Valley Dummy. The procession then went back to Drury to dance. On Saturday afternoon, Drury played against Hoosac Valley in a football game. The game proved to be very exciting, with Hoosac Valley winning, I 3 to 6. After last year's demoralizing defeat in the Western Mass. High School Team Championship, we returned this year, being seated in tenth place. This year, however, with outstanding performances by Jim Eade and Sam Hurlbut we proceeded to climb out of last place and on upward into third. Throughout the season, we kept the same playing arrangement with Jim Eade playing number one board, Tom Glickman and Sam Hurlbut playing two and three respectively. Larry Noyes played fourth and Jeff Delisle and Joe Salerno alternated at fifth spot. Alternates were Jim Shaker, Mike Reopell and Bruce Moulthrop. Once again the charges of Coach Joe Girardi thrilled Drury fans with their spectacular playing and team effort. The Blue Devils clinched the NBL Crown by defeating Pittsfield High in the last league game of the season. lt was in this game that Capt. Bill Reeves suc- ceeded in surpassing the l000th career point at Drury and also in breaking the individual record by scoring 42 points in one game. The Blue Devils then advanced to tournament play and easily beat St. Joseph's of Pittsfield for the Berkshire County Title. After an easy match against Palmer, they proceeded to defeat Amherst for their third Western Mass. title. Unfortu- nately, the Devils were no match for Rindge Tech. and lost to them in the state finals. Drury lost the opening game to Amherst, 8-7 in a non-league contest. Drury had an edge in hitting but , numerous Devil errors proved crucial. Drury evened its record at l-l with a IO-l victory over local St. Joseph's at Noel Field, Mike Emmons pitched the first five innings and got the win by striking out 8 batters. Brian Bilger and Dave Puppolo were the hitting leaders for Drury as Bilger had 0 triple and a home run, and Puppolo had 3 hits in 5 at- bats. v Drury picked up their second win, a 10-0 decision over Commerce, by virtue of a record-breaking 7 hitter pitched by Mike Emmons. Emmons struck out l6 batters, a new record, in going the route for Drury. He owned the game at the plate also, where he went 3 for 4 and collected a double and a triple. Drury then ran into league-leading Wachonnah as Jeff Rior- dan threw a masterful 3 hitter and the war- riors won, 7-O. Russ Miller, Mike Emmons and Dave Libardi got the only Drury hits. Drury lost its second game in a row at the hands of Taconic, a 6-5, i0 inning deci- sion. Dave Puppolo knocked in 2 Drury runs while George Galli and Brian Bilger got the others. Drury then routed Com- merce again, l4-3, at Noel Field. Mike Emmons allowed only one hit in the first five innings and got the win. George Galli collected four of Drury's I l hits and Mike Emmons had a solo home run. Drury then got a 5 hitter from Brian Bilger as they beat Lennox 7-I in a game that featured hits by all but three of the Drury lineup. Drury then dropped a 3-l contest to Lee in which the only Devil highlight was the fact that the team didn't make an error, the first game that they had managed to do that. Drury then stopped local St. Joseph's for the second time 5-3 behind some good pitching by sophomore Mark Gadbois. Libardi collected two hits, including a home run for Drury, and George Galli and Mark Gadbois got two apiece. Drury got a big rally going in the 6th to edge Hoosac Valley, 9-8, George Galli and Dave Pup- polo were the hitting leaders for Drury as they collected 3 and 2 hits respectively. Drury then beat Mt. Anthony but then lost to Monument Mountain a day later. Drury then beat Mt. Greylock 5-l in Williams- town. Mike Emmons pitched a strong game for Drury in getting the win. Joe Jammallo drove in one Drury run in the 7th with a triple, and Dave Puppolo, Brian Bil- ger and Dave Libardi all drove in runs with singles. St. .loseph's of Pittsfield then smashed the Devil's ll-3, but the next game was probably Drury's best of the year as they upset Pittsfield 8-4 at Noel Field. Some timely hitting by Dave Pup- polo, Bruce Johnson, and Dick Gilman proved the difference. Wahconnah then bombed Drury for the second time that season, l3-l. Drury lost another I0 inning decision to Taconic 7-5 in their next game. Kevin Bullet went the distance for Drury and pitched a good game in a losing effort. Drury then downed Hoosac, 4-2 behind some sharp pitching by Byron Bil- ger. George Galli, Mike Emmons, and Dave Puppolo each had two hits and Galli had two rbi's. Drury then beat Mt. Grey- lock 8-3 and lost its final game 6-5 to Pitts- field. All in all it was a discouraging year for Drury considering the team's high pre- season hopes. There were some bright spots for Drury, however, as Co-Captains Dave Puppolo and George Galli per- formed consistently well throughout the season, and the pitching of Mike Emmons was surprisingly good. 31 Tennis ' 's - I 13,31 ,- ',',- '.'.'.'.'.T A ... ..'.l.,is . .3 f ' '. - -as -.bn l 3- f .V . REAR, From Left: Mrs. Barbara Billings, Coach, Cathy Leu, Barbara Davis, Kevin Welch and Karen Tatro. In its first year of varsity tennis the team compiled a very respectable record of 6-6 and placed third in the Berkshire County League. Junior Pete Maroni was our number one player with senior Larry Noyes and Tom Glickman playing second and third respectably. Our first doubles team found Bob Gagne and Chris Brennan playing great tennis. The second doubles team of Barb Davis and Karen Tatro won several matches for us as they came through in the clutch. As the season opened against Taconic inexperience proved to be the deciding factor as we lost 3-2. However our next match against Hoosac Valley found us on top winning 3-2 with the third singles and two doubles teams winning. After a demoralizing 5-0 loss to league leading Pittsfield we defeated Monument Mt. 4-1. We then dropped our next match to Mt. Greylock 5-0 but took Taconic on our home courts by a score of 3-2 with our third singles and two doubles teams winning. We then beat Monument Mt. for the second time by a score of 4-1. For the second time Pittsfield proved to be too much for us as they again shut us out. In a close match with Waconah we came out on the short end 3-2. Then playing Greylock for the second time we won astonishingly 4-I . In our last two matches we beat Hoosac Valley for the second time by a score of 4-l with Pete Maroni, Larry Noyes and Tom Glickman winning at singles and Bob Gagne and Chris Brennan winning at doubles. In our final match we were handed a very demoralizing defeat by a score of 3-2 with only Pete Maroni and our first doubles team winning. pen Cam us for Seniors For the first time in the history of Drury High School members of a senior class were allowed alternatives to the traditional study hall. Any senior who presented a signed contractual agreement between the school and his parents was allowed to participate in the Optional Program. His participation was voluntary and subiect to the regular school rules together with the Optional Program rules. Participation was subiect to termination at any time by parents, the school adminis- tration as well as the Optional Program Student-Faculty Committee on Rules and Regulations. We learned to budget our free time, participate in independent research, attend mini-courses, work in downtown stores, and offer volunteer services. We also enjoyed leisure activities in the student lounge such as ping-pong, chess, reading, and cards. Approxi- mately 200 students participated in what we felt to be a very valu- able part of our high school life. COORDINATOR - Joseph P. We'll never walk these halls again, And in our hearts our mem'ries we'll retain To brighten up our lives in times of strain, And the words and the lessons all scattered in our brains Will still remain, Within the halls, of Drury. Good-bye sheltered life for now, It's time to broaden, time to grow Time to break our ties with long close friends, And open up our hearts to reach new ends, And our conversations of classes, friends, and strifes Will still remain, Within the halls, of Drury.
