The lead started off slowly, with the lead changing from one team to another throughout the first half. The Devils enioyed an easy lead throughout the rest of the game. Tom Kately was leading scorer with 21, followed by Shaun Sprague with 19. The Drury Team made their league record 5-0 by defeating Springfield Technical 60-49. The first half ended with the Dev- ils ahead by 5, and due to a very fine effort in the third period, they were able to clinch the victory. Lee Reeves was high scorer with 20. X The Blue Devils chalked up their second conference win against the Waconah Warriors racing past them to a 73-61 victory, in a foul filled game. The Devils wisked into an early lead and with the numerous rebounds and steals collected by Dave Libardi, Drury was able to hang on to the lead through- out the game. Tom Kately was high scorer with 23 points followed by Lee Reeves with 20. The Drury Blue Devils trailed Taconic by 8 points at the half, after getting off to a bad start. lt seemed like a new team that came out for the second half as the Devils defeated Taconic 77-66. Lee Reeves was high scorer with 24 points, followed by Dave Libardi with 21. The Drury starting five was impressive in the first half in piling up a 48-16 lead but in the second half the remaining six Devils were iust as impressive as they piled up the score even more to the 95-33 final score. Every Devil played and scored. The Drury team scored a convincing 76-63 win over the Lee Wildcats to remain the only undefeated team in the North Division of the Berkshire Hills Conference. The score was tied six times in the first half. The first half ended with Drury out in front 36-26, and from that point on they never lost the lead. Bill Reeves was high scorer with 23 points. Drury held a 15-7 lead after one period of play with the Hurricanes battling back in the second period to come within 3 points at the halftime. As the second half began the two teams traded baskets several times with Drury maintaining a nine point lead. Drury went on to defeat Hoosac Valley 81- 58. Drury picked up their seventh straight conference win as they rolled over Mt. Greylock 75-52. Lee Reeves was leading scorer with 24 followed by Billy Reeves with 19. The Devils dropped their second game of the season losing to Cathedral High 92-74. Throughout the first half, the game was close with the half ending 40-37 in favor of Cathedral. The final eight minutes were the toughest for Drury as the team was plagued with many fouls. Shaun Sprague was lead- ing scorer with 17 points. Drury High lumped into an early lead and was never headed as they coasted to a 91-81 win over the Monument Mountain Spartans. The Reeves brothers proved the difference in the game as Bill slipped in 32 points and Lee gunned in 23. Drury defeated Pittsfield High 85-70 for their ninth straight league victory. The score was tied nine times during the first two periods before the Devils built up a seven point lead 45- 38 at half time. Lee Reeves was high scorer with 27 points, followed by Shaun Sprague with 21 and Bill Reeves with 19. 73 The Drury Blue Devils downed the Waconah War- riors by the score of 57-56. Drury was behind by one point with only seconds left in the game when Lee Reeves came through, swishing the net on a 15 foot jumper from the corner, giving the Devils the one point win. Leading scorers were Bill Reeves with 20, Lee Reeves with 14 and Shaun Sprague with 12. Drury picked up their eleventh league win in a 66- 57 decision over St. Joe lP.1. Bill Reeves led all scor- ers with 20 while his brother Lee hit 17 and Shaun Sprague hit for 15. Drury was one step away from winning the North Division title when an unbelievably sticky Taconic halted the Devils 65-62. This was Drury's first loss in league play. Billy Reeves was top scorer with 24 points, while Shaun Sprague, Ron Goss and Dave Libardi each had 10. The Devil team defeated Hoosac Valley 44-43 in what is considered to be one of the finest exhibitions of defensive ability ever in the annals of Drury-Ad- ams basketball history. Billy Reeves led the team in scoring with 16 points. The Devils pulled into a quick lead and then waltzed past Mt. Greylock for a 103-77 victory. Billy Reeves finished with 17, Lee Reeves had 16, Mike Emmons 13, Dave Libardi 11 and Ron Goss 10. Drury, the North Division Champs, had trouble getting started and left at the half trailing Pittsfield High 38-35. lt appeared that Coach Girardi had re- grouped his forces as the Devils went into a 65-52 lead in the third period. Then in the final quarter the Generals outscored Drury 26-12, for a 78-77 win. Lee Reeves was high scorer with 27 points followed by his brother Bill with 17. The Drury Blue Devils won the Berkshire Hills Con- ference and the Berkshire County Championship by defeating the Spartans of Monument Mountain 75- 60. Devil players, fans, and coaches had their wor- ries midway through the third period when Drury trailed by 8 points. Drury closed the gap and took a four point lead by the buzzer and moved into a more comfortable lead in the final period. Lee Reeves led the team in scoring with 25 points, fol- lowed by his brother Bill with 23 and Shaun Sprague with 17. The Devils muscled their way past Westfield 73-61 in the quarter finals of the Western Mass. section of the basketball tournament. Westfield took the open- ing tap and scored on a layup for their only lead in the game 2-O. Shaun Sprague countered with a long one handed shot to tie the game and the hit on his second straight hoop to send Drury ahead for keeps. Westfield never managed to close the gap as coach Girardi inserted some of his reserves. Billy Reeves led the Drury offense with 21 points, Lee Reeves col- lected 18 and Shaun Sprague and Dave Libardi both hit 14. 74 i lv ll The Drury Blue Devils nipped the Hoosac Valley Hurricanes 58-57 to reach the tourney finals. The game will now probably be known as one of the most exciting in the history of the two schools. Drury jumped into an early lead and then fought tooth- and-nail to hold off the Hurricanes and capture the win. Shaun Sprague was top scorer with 18 points, followed by Billy Reeves with 17 and Lee Reeves with 13. Lee Reeves led off the fourth quarter surge to give Drury a 54-52 win over Monument Mountain and the West Section title in the Division Il basketball tourna- ment action. Drury was outplayed for three periods but took advantage when two of the Monument Mountain players got into foul trouble in the final period. Lee Reeves scored 8 consecutive points to start a 16-point chain that brought Drury back from a 49-37 deficit with six minutes left in the final pe- riod. Billy and Lee Reeves were leading scorers with 21 and 16 points respectively. The Guardians of St. Peter's opened an 11-point lead in the second quarter and staved off a coura- geous rally in the final minutes of the game to cap- ture an 88-77 win over Drury. The charges of coach Joe Girardi went into the final minutes trailing by 1 1. The never-say-die players and fans waited with chair- gripping tenseness for the rally all knew would be coming. The Devils out-scored the Guardians 27-21 in the final quq-Ser but fouls made the difference. Scoring honors went to Billy Reeves with 27, Lee Reeves with 24, and Shaun Sprague with 19. Track 1972 Drury entered the 72 track season in a definite rebuilding year, with only 2 seniors, Co-Capt. John Goodell and Co-Capt. Frank DePaoli. Because of inclement early spring weather, Drury only had one week to work out be- fore the first meet. Drury lost the opening meet to Mt. Greylock 89-51 and was defeated two days later by Taconic 103-37. However there were some bright spots in both losses as Ron Chenail, only a sophomore, be- gan looking impressive in the weight events and Billy Reeves was beginning to shine in the triple lump and high iump. Drury's next meet was with Hoosac which was rained out and then Drury journeyed to Mohawk, los- ing a tough decision by 11 points. The Devils put it all together in the next meet against Wahconah, winning by 82-58. The win was highlighted by Billy Reeves winning the triple jump of 39' 2 , eclipsing the previous school record of 38' 8Vz , held by Cary Das- satti. The meet also seemed to illus- trate Drury's growing depth as the Devils collected 9 seconds and 10 thirds. Drury's next meet was against Pittsfield and the Devils came out on the short end of the score, 96-44. Frank DePaoli was a double winner for Drury, taking both hurdle events. In the next meet Drury showed depth and experience in defeating Turner Falls 85-55. Drury had 3 double win- ners in Paul Chito, Ron Chenail and Billy Reeves. Reeves broke his triple record set two meets ago with a 40' 1OV2 iump. Other first place winners were John Goodell, Frank DePaoli, Larry Potvin and George Apkin. Drury dropped the next meet to powerful Hoosac, in a contest that had been rescheduled because of rain. Drury won the final meet over Frontier, BOV2-59V2, with Paul Chito and Billy Reeves both double winners. Other first were Larry Potvin, who ran a 4:51 mile in his first attempt at the event, Bob Cannity, Frank DePaoli, Ron Chenail, and George Apkin. Things look very good for next year though, with 13 Iettermen returning led by tri-captains Paul Chito, Mike Falcon, and Larry Potvin. Other return- ing Iettermen are Billy Reeves, Ron Chenail, Richie Taskin, George Apkin, Mark Thomann, Bob Cannity, Peter Demeo, Dave Trottier, Chuck Gas- pardi, and Gary Ghidotti. Other scor- ers for the year were Jim Caffrey, Art Wilk, Ed Lapine, Pete Maroni, Marc Ghidotti, Dale Beverly, and Larry Noyes. if sa s ' ' i X h , A :W U I I .A NL J l H t Q -- ' , f. We'll be free of the rule we flee Yet reminisce Good and bad that we miss. Some say they have no cares For what school has done and for what it shares. But when they stop the game, We all find we feel exactly the same If there be A new world to see, Let us bind Future quests with our finds.
