In this year- book we have tried to show the true spirit of Drury High through its seniors, its clubs and activities, its sports teams, and its out- standing yearly events. We have tried to recapture for the seniors their wonderful senior year here at Drury. We know that these pictures will always bring back meni- ories and we hope they are always pleasant ones. We hope that we have succeeded in capturing that spirit - youthful, fun- loving, serious, progressive - as all of THIS IS DRURY HIGH -www ,gf 7 ,lp 4-A up-5 wx . .sf L., ,y - ' s Jw an Q l1,- ' Q I .A 1 1 4 M5 , . 952 ,. - s. A graduate of Boston University, he obtained his A.B. in 1929 and his M.A. in 1930 from there. He came to Drury in 1938 and taught first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year Latin. He is a past president of the former North Adams School Employee's Association. From 1953 to 1960 he was faculty advisor to the Yearbook Staff and he has been faculty advisor to the senior class. In 1960 he was appointed Vice-Principal at Drury and in 1962 he was named Dean of Men, both of which positions he now holds. In appreciation of his untiring work for the students at Drury High School, and his contribution to the welfare of the students, school, and community, the Class of 1963 would like to dedicate this record of their senior year to Mr. Howard. 5 SCHOOL COMMITTEE In RUIIY Mrs. Bawiii, Nlayfir Flnrini, Mr. Cullen. 2nd ROW: Mr. Petri, Superintendent In Taylwr, Mr. Be-all. Thru the year and the dayls gone by, Wfe have honored thee proudly dear Drury High. Gone gone are those joyful days, lVhen our hearts were young and our minds were gay. Sweet breath of the years to be, .-X5 we strengthen the knowledge we'ye gained from thee. The years to Come may seem hard and long, We will travel on keeping morals strong. After their four years at Drury, the school would never again be the same. The eager freshmen were finally established in the school in spite of the efforts of the mighty seniors to direct them to the furnace room for English class. The members of the class soon had become involved in various athletic activities and other school func- tions. Freshmen Student Council members elected in the fall were Shapiro, George Lerrigo, and Judy Girgenti. Our first class project before the stu- dent body was the Patriot's Day Assembly in April under the careful eye of Mrs. Brawn. It was soon time to elect our Sophomore class of- ficers and Student Council representatives. Dick Gig- liotti was chosen President, and George Ruberti was elected treasurer, while Jane Marsh became Secre- tary, and Judy Girgenti, Vice-President. Student Council representatives were Jay Shapiro, Bruce Ba- tease, George Lerrigo, and Barbara Giusti. Before we knew it, the time for final exams had arrived and we eagerly departed for a summer vacation which seemed much too short. Returning in the fall as sophomores or wise fools we were plunged into such frightening classes as biology and French. YVe were old hands at high school life, however, and not even Mr. Boisvert nor Mr. Sondrini could dampen our spirits. Soon after our return, the scholastic achievement awards in the form of jackets were presented to those twelve stu- dents who had maintained a ninety average during their freshmen year. The annual Sophomore Frolic was presented under the theme 'fHarvest Moon. A skit with an all girl cast gave the first indication of the acting ability of our classmates. lfVe had four finalists in the John H. Reilly Contest that year: Mary Lou Brewer, Ann Clark, George Lerrigo, and Carolyn Sanford. As the year drew to a close, we again elected Dick Gigliotti as President and Jane Marsh as Secretary for the junior year, with Mary jane Kassner getting Vice- President and Jerry Hamilton, Treasurer. Our Stu- dent Council representation was increased to five as Steve Brallier and Ann Clark were elected to Fill these positions. When final exams rolled around again, we were confident that we would succeed with- out studying, so a great many fiunked. Once again summer vacation was greatly enjoyed by all. Returning as juniors, we finally had our chance to look down on the seniors. from the balcony, that is. Very early in the year, the scholastic achievement awards were again presented to those who maintained a ninety average or better. Our class rings arrived early in the fall under a new program instituted by our class. At Christmas, the class voted to present a Christ- mas party for the residents of the City Infirmary. Several of the members of the class under the leader- ship of the class officers attended. VVe hoped that this would become an annual affair. In December, the members of the junior Class who maintained an average of eighty-five or better for their first two years were appointed to the Nu Sigma Epsilon honor society. Twenty-two students achieved the honor. The first major project of our high school career was the junior class play, Mjunior Miss which was directed by Mr. Gravel. Ann Clark had the title role as Junior Miss. The class demonstrated its acting ability and proved to all that it had very good actors and actresses in it. The john H. Reilly Speaking Con- test found Sandy Clough and john Roach in the Hnals. In June, the Junior class presented the annual prom for the seniors. The theme was Beauty of the Deepf' and the Armory was suitably decorated with fish, mermaids, and driftwood. We also started what we hoped would become a tradition at Drury, a Senior Farewell Assembly. As the junior year drew to a close, we re-elected Dick Gigliotti as President, Mary Jane Kassner as Girls' Vice-President, jerry Hamilton as Treasurer, and jane Marsh as Secretary, with Rob Boyer as Boys' Vice-President. Jay Shapiro was elected President of the Student Council and was supported by Ann Clark, Steve Brallier, Barbara Giusti, Don Lamoureaux, Myra Kelman, and Al Skorupski. Returning in the fall for the last time, 129 seniors were determined to get the most out of their last year, both in studies and in extracurricular activi- ties. lVe won the Field Day events for the first time in league with the Sopllomores and hlary Lou Brewer and Ann Clark succeeded in making a new record in winning the three-legged race for the third con- secutive year. The Exchange Group from lVheaton, Illinois visited our school in October. Several of the boys from the Senior Class were on the 1962 Champi- onship Drury football team, The Senior Class play was a new experiment in the form of a courtroom drama, entitled The Night of jamiary l6th. hir. Gravel served as director. In spite of inclement weather both nights of the play. it proved successful. Later in the year the names of the twenty-one seniors were announced as members of Pro Nlerito, the Sen- ior Honor Society. At the same time, the students who had maintained a ninety average throughout their four years were announced. They were George Bailey, Sandy Clough, lNIary jane Daniels, and -jerry Hamilton. Sandy Clough was also chosen as the DAR Good Citizen for the year. The last program put on by the Seniors was the lNfIemorial Day Asseuibly. .Xs is the custom. flags and flowers were placed at each memorial tree in front of Drury by twenty-two senior girls dressed in white. Our four memorable years at Drury closed with a week of fun-hlled activities that climaxed with our graduation on Sunday, june 16th.
