1 S v. 1 J Th Class of I 962 NATHANITE Drury High School North Adams M h Close friends and casual acquaintances bring back innumerable pleasant memories which will be cherished throughout the future. We trust that all present friendships will be continued hereafter. CONTENTS Our administrators, faculty and stall' inc-mbrrrs have guided us along tlir- paths 1 of righteousness to enable us to reach our goals in life. For their unselhsh sacrince we shall be forever grateful. K l 1 I I I V I Drury has always been noted for fine tearns. Our generation has at- teinptecl to carry on this tradition, while at the same time enjoying intramural and interscholas-tic sports as an essential part of our education. Accomplishments of a personal, school or community nature resulted from these meetings. From 8:13 to 9:00 A.M. and after school hours, many busy workers have spent much time on useful or educational enterprises. 2 FOREWORD Books are keys to Wisdomls treasures, Books are keys to lands of pleasures, Books are paths that upward lead, Books are friends, come let us read. Books are means to joyous daysg Books are friendsg come let us gaze. Welcome to our 1962 Nathanite. With the idea of presenting the past year's oc- currences in a memorable manner we have worked that our book might be per- fect even to the smallest detail. Before it was finished, we realized that all our dreams had not come true. However, as our founder and namesake, Nathan Drury, clung to his vision of a better future, so we have fostered our hopes of perfection, which have culminated in this Nathanite of 1962. Silhouettes were chosen for our division pages to symbolize those whom we know and shall always remember as the years go by - even if particular names and faces do grow obscure. Each of these figures is looking heavenward to signify our never-ending pursuit of the epitome of success, the acme of happiness and the joys of paradise. The creation of any book is an adventure - an adventure into which one enters with all possible zest and zeal. So it was that the Nathanite Staff set out to create a new yearbook, one which might reflect the ardent spirit of the Drury High School Class of 1962, and radiate some of its ideals in the pages of a book. May each page recall some of this spirit and some of these ideals to your memory. After four enjoyable years together we have come to the sad parting of ways. Our senior prom, class night and all graduation ceremonies have brought oc- casions of rejoicing with melancholy overtones. May we be together many times in the years ahead to relive all that is pictured within this volume. We are most thankful to those whose loyal support has made this book possible. All are urged to patronize the business establislmuems which have their services advertised herein. Some have memories of part-time employment in them, while all recall the courtesy with which we have been received. 3 1 MEMQRIAM On January 27, 1962, Mr. Guy E. Cameron, retired Vice-Principal of Drury High School, passed away. May each student in the Class of 1962 always keep a cherished place in his memory for this unforgettable faculty member. DEDICATIO With deep appreciation for his beneficial guidance, his as- sistance so willingly rendered, and his untiring and faithful friendship, we, the Class of 1962, dedicate our Yearbook to Mr. Paul O. Gravel. 5 t,,,.?.....l FIRST ROW: Mr. Cullen, Mayor Florini, Mr. Petri, Mr. Beall. SECOND ROW: Superintendent Taylor, Mr. Bryson. Missing: Mrs. Bacon, Mr. Nassif. SCHOCL COMMITTEE Our School Committee is not seen by our students in everyday school life, but plays a very important part in the school,s function. Balancing the budget while wrestling with the necessity of securing new equipment for our school, alleviating the problem of overcrowded rooms, securing new teachers, planning new building and expansion programs . . . and the list goes on as the duties of our School Com- mittee members increase from year to year. Through long and tedious meetings, this group tries to help our community - the ci-ty of North Adams. TITLE: Class History CHARACTERS: Members of the Drury High School Class of 1962 headed by Edward Noel, President, Daniel Ralston, Boys' Vice-Presidentg Judith Benedetti, Girls' Vice-President, Jean Graziola, Secretary: Betsy Clermont, Treasurer. DIRECTORS: Mrs. Marion Sweeney and Mr. Irving P. Toupence, our Class Advisors SETTING: Classrooms of Drury High School TIME: September 1958 -- june 1962 AUTHORS: David Cohen and Justyna Steuer NARRATORS: David Messier and Justyna Steuer In September 1958, two hundred thirty-two nervous fresh- men entered the halls of Drury High School, their home away from home for what were to turn out to be four swiftly passing years of labor and laughter together. We soon found ourselves established with some prestige even among the upper classmen by teaming up with our sister class, the Juniors, to win the annual Field Day - an accomplishment which we later achieved again as Juniors and as Seniors. As the year proceeded, we acquired a say in the affairs of 'fDrury on the hill by electing our three student council representatives. Members of the class began to put a foot into everything with some becoming junior varsity cheer- leaders, baton twirlers, band members, or sports, partici- pants. Twenty-two of us made the honor roll for the first mark- ing period in high school that fall, while in the spring we put on the traditional Patriots' Day assembly, our first real class venture presented before the entire student body. Final exams caused apprehensions, but once over, we longingly anticipated our sophomore year. Now with the freshmen under us, our own class oflicers, and four Student Council Representatives, we silly sopho- mores had the play The Night the Ghost Got In, for the Sophomore Frolic which had as its theme K'The Haunted House. The scholastic year proved trying for many but a new award was in store for those successfully completing their studies. In June, ten of us were presented certificates to be followed by scholastic award honor jackets for having at- tained a 90W average that year. We had also shown athletic prowess as sophomores beginning with a 13-8 football vic- tory over arch rival Adams on November 11, 1959. Behind us lay memories of freshman English, Latin, general science, and world history as well as sophomore biology. Ahead of us lay only the second half of our high schools careers - as upper classmen, now well acquainted with the ins and outs of undergraduate days. In 1961, as Juniors, this class undertook the production of a theatrical presentation, ''Alice-Sit-By-The-Fire,'l and for the first time had a real opportunity to demonstrate their ability to work as a group. The actors performed the roles of this subtle comedy well, and both they and the non-acting participants - such as those involved in make- up. stage managing, etc. - right down to the ushers helped to make the play a success acknowledged by both the public and the critics. A large share of the credit for the success of this production and also of the Senior Class Play, however, must be given to the members of the faculty who contrib- uted their time, effort. and ability to the directing of these plays. The junior Prom, an annual affair produced by the Junior Class for the benefit of the Seniors, in 1961 achieved perhaps the acme of elaborateness of any like affair in the history of Drury High School. Employing a Parisien theme, the decor centered around a replica of the Eiffel Tower, and the interior accessories were arranged in true Parisien cafe motiff. The entire project represented a concerted effort on the part of this class to make last year's Prom the best ever attempted. The Senior Play, Meet Me In St. Louis, was a much less subtle variety of comedy than attempted in Alice-Sit- By-The-Fire, and its excellent production received both popular and critical acclaim. Again this class proved their spirit by their tireless efforts in the acting and non-acting assignments. The play concerns the amusing predicaments that befall a middle-class family residing in St. Louis during the early part of the century, and credit must be given the actors for their excellent and entertaining portrayals. But credit must again be given, however, to the faculty directors and the many behind-the-scenes people who contributed so greatly to the successful production of this play. The Exchange program was instituted in Drury High School in an effort to broaden the student through acquaintance with other people of his own age in different environments, and to familiarize him with the social cus- toms, natural resources, and industrial development in other parts of the country. The twenty-four students chosen from this class to represent Drury High School and North Adams in their exchange with students from Wyandotte, Michigan, performed their ambassadorial assignments well, impressing everyone, both here and in Wyandotte, with their vigor and enthusiasm in making the Exchange a success. It is hoped that future Exchange groups will ac- complish as much in promoting good relations between communities, Throughout their Junior and Senior years, the Class of '62 maintained a strong interest in academics, and the ex- cellence of this group can be attributed not only to their ability to learn, but to their eager desire to better them- selves intellectually. No fact can more clearly attest to the idealistic goals raised by this class and the accomplishment of these goals than the large number of students who, in 1961, earned the right to be classified as members of Nu Sigma Epsilon, the Junior honor society, and who, in the following year, received membership in the Pro Merito honor society. Indeed, this high ratio of honor students re- flects most favorably upon this graduating class - a class which has followed and upheld Drury High School's honored tradition of academic excellence and educational development. A Greek philosopher once said that physical and mental conditioning go hand in hand. The athletes of this class have demonstrated this maxim very well indeed, not only have they exhibited physical prowess on the playing field, but they have been for the most part good students as well. Members of this class have contributed greatly to Drury's reputation of perseverance and good sportsmanship in competitive athletics. Several of this year's Seniors were awarded high-ranking honors in both athletics and aca- demics - a modern example of the practicability of an ancient philosophy. The final class-sponsored activities of this year reveal. I believe, the true mettle of this group. Due to Hnancial difficulty, the Senior Class. during the last part of May. organized a car wash, in which each individual could contribute his own time and effort to personally help his class. The results were gratifying, they showed the spirit, co-operation, and willingness to work for which this class has been noted since entering Drury. Following the car wash, a candy sale was instituted to further aid our Hnan- cially distressed class. The same quality of spirit and effort previously demonstrated was again apparent and distin- guished a united and successful class project. 94 CLASS PROPHECY It is a balmy day in June. The place is New York City where the World's Fair of 1977 is being held. Busily working at his desk, John Weld, the dashing reporter of the New York Times, sets out to report on the World's Fair. Before leaving the office, he assigns duties to his secretaries, Mary Sherman, Dianne Blair, Carolyn Jones, Lois Maxymillian, Rachel Morin, and Marcia Pontier. His first stop is at the barber shop around the corner where he stops to chat with Bill Hein, the proprietor, and his assistant Ray Lucznyski. Passing by King's Beauty Salon, he speedily waves to Pamela and Sandy King, the co-owners of the establish- ment. He also sees Sandy Nash, and Ellen Costello having their hair done for their double wedding ceremony on the following day. Suddenly the tooting of a horn arouses his attention, and turning his head, he sees New York's famous lawyers Dick Plumb, John Jewett, and Gary Bombardier passing by in their limousine driven by their chauffeur David Miner. He decides to stop at the local bar and grille run by Tom Armbruster. He spots some of his old buddies, Bill Cullen, Ronnie Ferris, and Mike Major now running one of the exclusive clubs in Las Vegas. The room now becomes quiet for the championship fight of the year between Bob Beebe and George Emmons is about to appear on T.V. However, Jack cannot remain to see the conclusion of the iight for he has a busy schedule ahead of him. He says good-bye to Harold Jones, the bartender, and leaves. He hails a taxi and to his amazement, Ted Stasiowski is the driver. His first stop is the United Nations building where he sees several tours being led by Carol Briggs, Anne La Cross, Karen Gilmore, Marsha Clarke, and Cheryl Marazzi as guides. His attention is then drawn by a group of inter- preters, Kathy O,Brien, Justyna Steuer, Keith Chalmers, and Judy Darling, busily interpreting the foreign press con- ference in which Barry Less, U.S. Ambassador to Israel, and his good comrade David Cohen, U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union, are participating. Larry Belleau, Roger Burdick, Timmy Haun, and Bill Dion, are cleaning an adjoining room. Leaving the U.N. building, he stops at a newsstand, and buys a copy of the morning paper from Carlton Hewitt. Listed on the front page, he sees the names of Wayne Brierley, Buddy Brownsword, John Paserbiak, Harry Urban, John Netherwood, Chris Swenson, and Norm St. Pierre, all who have signed up for the Peace Corps. Turning to the Society Page, he reads where the famous designer Patsy Washburn is showing her new summer creations. Judy Brooks, Cheryl Murphy, Sandy Smith, Sandy Pugliese, Jean Brigham, Judy Mazza, and Judy Jayne are the models. On the Sports Page, he sees a picture of the Boston Red Sox and recognizes Dick Sheldon, the pitcher, Eddie Noel, the outfielder, John Robinson, Tom Richards, and Jimmy Bryson. The front page reads - 500 TEACHERS STRIKE IN NEW YORK CITY. The opinions of various teachers for and against the strike are presented. On the list Jack noticed the names of his old classmates, Nancy Lombard, Carole Giorgenti, Madeleine Jones, Carol Douglas, Carol Abbott, Karen Moreau, Angela Lora, Sandy Lavanway, Jean Le Stage, Elizabeth Chambers, Dave Tadiollo, Paul Partenope, Francis Morandi, Kenny Morris, Carl Hansen, Merlene Vickery, and Linda Wheeler. He also reads where Betsy Clermont is making her debut at Radio City Music Hall. Jack then decides to stop at the hospital to see his wife who has just had her twelfth child. As he goes down the hall, he passes several nurses that he knows, Alice Tew, Linda Thibert, Ethel Chambers, Lynda Bergeron, Shirley Estes, Nancy Weslowski and Brenda Murdock. He sees Linda Kelley running down the hall with a test tube, and the head doctor Bernie Lavenda, chasing her. Passing by the Interns room, he notices Danny Scully, Fran Horahan, and James Northrup. After seeing his wife, he leaves the hospital and heads for the World's Fair. First he enters the Science Building and finds the scien- tists Danny Stone, David Messier, Pat Mantello, Dan Ralston and Bob Williams working on the new science project of the year. In the Automotive Building, he sees Art Lemire, Timothy Nadeau, Ernie Lamarre, Kipper Lamb, Carl Kingsley, James Horan, Alfred Denault, Gary Ames, Stephen Wool, Stanley Tower, and Ronald Skovera, now top-notch mechanics, exhibiting their new flying car. Stopping at the restaurant to get a bite to eat, he sees as waitresses, Berna- dette Perras, Judy Salavantis, Jackie Segala, Claire Martin, Carol Zagarinsky, Janet Buzzell and Carol Cermenaro. In the Home Economics building, he comes across Liz Gorcza- koski, Jean Graziola, Linda Hodgdon, Nancy Kirkpatrick, Toni Chenail and Denise Caron exhibiting the latest in culinary art and interior decorating. Coming out of the building, Jack spots Alan Horbal selling peanuts and Eddie Howland, the chief caretaker, picking up the shells. Jack then leaves the World's Fair and returns to his oflice to turn in his day's report to be typed up by the secretaries, Hope Pratt, Barbara Preite, Jean Robinson, Betty Sweeney, Ruth Boucher, Linda Armstron. Pat Bemis, and Martha Ferris. Jack then decides that since his day's work is finished he will go to Esty Mason's night club for a little relaxation. He is greeted by Paula Gotzens. Carol O'Connell. and Judy Benedetti as cigarette girls. Playing in the orchestra are John Crofts, Danny Dobbert, Don Chesboro, Len Gigliotti, and Paul Catelotti. Providing the entertainment are the exotic dancers, Karen Gayda and Barbara Durant. Tired from his busy day, Jack now leaves the night Club and his fond memories of the Class of '6Q. 95 CLASS WILL VVC. the class of '62, dispensing with the ridiculous legal terminology, proclaim this to be our last will and testament, bequeathing to: Dr. Taylor 3 Thu Rvpublic autographed by Plato. 59 Mr. Drotter 3 The Chubby Checker twist album, g'Let's Twist Again, Mrs. Allen 3 A bird-watcher's manual.
