This is the building, the students, the faculty, and the traditions of an institution dedicated to an intangible ideal that tomorrow's achievements are built on today's accomplishments, the dreams of yesterday. The Nathanite Staff would like to extend a sincere thank-you to everyone who helped in the publication of our Yearbook. We hope that you will enjoy the 1961 Nathanite as much as we have enjoyed publishing it. ,wwf dF +. He possessed a sincerity of purpose and an unyielding devotion and dedication to help and encourage youth, both in school and in industry. In his heart and soul was the idea of a more equitable educational opportunity for the youth and adults in this area. '6lVlr. Macfi as he was known by his students, considered it a special privilege to help each one of his boys grow in confidence, in ability, and in knowledge, sometimes despite their almost over- whelming personal problems. A favorite quotation of Mr. lVlcCann was- I shall prepare my- self-for my opportunity shall surely come. The city of North Adams and the surrounding area suffered a great personal loss with Mr. lVlcCann's death, but the students and citizens will know him always through the school his dream and Ndrive built and through his 'cbeloved boysu whom he brought to manhood. As a teacher he would ask no more. CHOOL COMMITTEE 1 .4 ' X l AU r K 15,4 1, -1 T A , , 1, 1 L- .- 1 1............ --Car, l' . ,fl First Row: Mrs. E. Bacon, Mayor L. Diamond, Mr. T. Cullen, Mr. T. Our School Committee is not seen by our students in everyday school life, yet the school could not function without it. Balancing the budget while wrestling with the necessity of securing new equipment for our school, alleviating the problem of overcrowded rooms, securing new teachers, planning new building and expansion programs . . . and the list goes on as the duties of our School Committee members increase from year to year. Realizing that their decisions direct the course of our school, this group holds numerous and lengthy meetings in an effort to give the people of the community the most for their money. 5-qw vnu., P , Q f 1 f I ' g is V F -+g..,M -menu. ' 7 LG 0, ' .7 7 - 1 PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE It is a sincere pleasure to Write a few thoughts for the Class of 1961. Similar to last year, this has an additional meaning for another milestone has been reached. During the Revolutionary War Thomas Paine stated, '4These are the times that try men's souls. History is replete with such times. You are living, at this moment, in trying times. The spread of Communism, integration, missile development, and complacent citizens are 'alarming in their extent. To curb this extent is to demand greater strength on the part of many than ever before. This strength is not only to be physical but also moral. Moral strength is strength of character. The implication is that there must be knowledge of truth and fulfillment of this truth. The fulfillment of truth is where strength of character prevails. These thoughts are given to you for reflection and analysis of your status, as you enter another phase of your life. You will adjust to the challenges of the times according to your strengths and weaknesses. As an American, reaping the benefits of our Wonderful Way of life, you are duty-bound to develop to the best of your capacity. It means continual hard work and study. It means keeping in mind the following-6'Character is a victory, not a giftf' May happiness and continued success follow each and every member of the Class of 1961. Stephen J. CLASS ODE 1961 fTheme of Exodusj The time has come to bid a fond adieu To Drury, Alma Mater true. In words, none can express The thoughts We wish to stress, Feelings mixed with joy and, somehow, sorrow, too The joy because at last we have achieved The goals set forth in younger years. Yet sorrow filters through For all the friends we knew Who will soon continue on their separate ways. Now that the year is done, it seems We've just begun to walk along our path of dreams To brighter goals, To greater dreams. Led by these dreams we feel destined to build, We bid a fond farewell to thee. Though years may come and go And such dreams fade, we know That our faith in God shall ever strengthened be. So, Drury, we shall e'er remember you, Your dedicated teachers, too. Many good times we've had To overpow'r the bad. May your walls ne'er fall 'til time itself is through. With our faith in God for aye, We will not say good-bye, dear Alma Mater true: We'll say farewell, Farewell to you! Miss Dianne Falcon DRURY ALMA MATER Drury, Mother on the hill Time but adds to faith in thee For We are all thy children still And loyal we'll ever be. With thy banners blue unfurled, Battles fought, We upward climb O lead us onward through the world But victory and praise be thine. Years may come and years may go, Hope and courage hearts will fill Still our thoughts will backward flow Beloved Drury on the hill. Hail, hail, all hail to thee Honored forever be Let our voices sing thy praises Drury on the hill. As we gathered on Noel Field in the traditional blue and white caps and gowns, feelings of joy and sad- ness filled our hearts as we recalled our four memorable years at Drury on the Hill? We entered in September, 1957, 218 Freshmen, curious and uncertain as to what lay before us. As we sat in the auditorium waiting for the assembly to begin, we could feel the eyes of the upperclassmen on us. They were all laughing at our silly antics. However, as the assembly proceeded our worried thoughts were cleared and we felt more at ease. After the assembly we went to our homerooms, trembling in fear until we discovered there were two doors to each room-ah, an avenue of escape!! We soon found ourselves thrust into a busy school life. When the annual Field Day was held we proved ourselves equal to our upperclassmen by winnings the com- petition with our sister class, the Juniors. This was a feather in our beanie which we were proud of. As the year proceeded, we became a unified body. Our Student Council representa- tives were Jane Schulze, Jim Rhodes and John Cibeau. The J .V. Cheerleading squad now had five new members, Patricia Girgenti, Judy Noel, Margo Drotter, Tibby Mahoney and Dona Grillone. Bruce Gallagher made the Varsity Basketball Team that year. Our biggest worry had been final exams and once we had struggled through them, we looked forward to our Sophomore year with keen anticipation. Back to school strolled 213 silly Sophomores, and we feared no one now!! We had elected our class officers with Peter Spencer, President, Margo Drotter, Vice President, Patricia Girgenti, Secretary, and Dianne Falcon, Treasurer. We showed our initiative and social inclinations when we presented the Sophomore Frolic Play, Pajama Party, with an all-girl cast. The boys didn't have a chance! The theme of the dance was Ghosts and Goblinsn with cider, doughnuts, and cornstalks. Tibby Mahoney was the new member to Student Council. The John H. Reilly Speaking Contest had two winners from our class, Margo Drotter won 2nd prize and Eileen Boisjolie won 3rd prize. Dona Grillone was captain of the J.V. Cheer- leaders and Donna Fulginiti was captain of the Baton Twirlers. When spring came and the girls, thoughts turned to love, the boys, thoughts turned to baseball and track. In the fall of '59, 202 Juniors trudged up the walks of Drury High. A look of utter boredom was on the face of every student. But this proved to be one of the most exciting years in our high school career. Our class officers this year were President, Pete Spencer, Vice President, Barbara Trabold, Secretary, Eileen Boisjolie, and Treasurer, Suzanne Trudeau. The newest member to Student Council was Julie Clark. We voted on class rings and as a result two styles were chosen. The Junior Class Play was the big event of the year. The title was '4Gentlemen Prefer Blondesf' To the surprise of everyone, our class had much talent. The Speaking Contest that year was won by Margo Drotter with Judy Noel win- ning 3rd place. Our athletes helped win the Drury-Adams game and the Western Massachusetts Track meet. Fifty-two Juniors were honored at the Nu Sigma Assembly. The spring found us planning the Senior Reception. Everyone worked to make this the best event of the school year. A Japanese theme added to the dream-like evening. Everyone had a marvelous time. As some of us went off to leisurely vacations, others trudged off to summer school. The fall of 1960 found 196 sophisticated seniors entering Drury High School. It didnlt seem possible that this was the last year of our high school days. We were determined to make this a memorable year. Class officers were President, Pete Spencer, Girls, Vice President, Barbara Trabold, Boys' Vice President, Bob McKee, Secretary, Eileen Boisjolie, and Treasurer, Dianne Falcon. Marcia McGowan was elected captain of the Baton Twirlers and Margo Drotter was elected captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders. Bruce Gallagher was now captain of the Varsity Basketball and Baseball Team and Bob Heisler and Jim Rhodes were co-captains of the Track Team. Bob Heisler made All-Berkshire Football team. Student Council's newest members were Suzanne Williams, Biff Trudeau, Stan Brailler, Bill Toohey. Tibby Mahoney was President. The Yearbook editors were Barbara Trabold and Carol Bosch Co-editors, Ann Pelletier, Art Editor, Jane Callahan, Copy Editor, Margo Drotter, Sports Editor, Donna Eulginiti, Business Manager, and George Betourney, Photographer. Judy Noel was Editor-in-Chief of the Academe. The Senior Class Play Too Many Dates was a real success. It had a modern day theme. In February, 30 ecstatic students rolled off to Hershey, Pennsylvania, for a 'Gno- dozw Week. As senior year moved on, senioritis set in. Eleanor Lazzari won the speaking contest, Tibby Mahoney was elected DAR Good Citizen, and Eileen Boisjolie was our representative to Student Government Day in Boston. On a warm sunny day in May, the Memorial Day Exercises were held. It was a solemn affair with Mr. Gloster as main speaker. As commencement day drew near, 45 Pro Merito members were listed with 12 attaining 90 per cent or better for four years. Everything was graduation talk, and very little studying was done. The Senior Tea and Banquet were held at the Masonic Temple, Pro Merito Banquet at the Phoenix Hotel, and the Senior Reception at the Armory with a Parisian theme. Thus ended our four never-to-be-forgotten years at Drury. As we marched off the field with tears in our eyes, we humbly and sincerely said from the very dep-ths of our hearts, Thank You, Drury, We'll miss youlw The Class History was written by the following people: Susan Elder Jane Callahan Carol Rosch Margo Drotter They were scholastically rated in the top twelve of our class.
