But do thou speak what befits the sound doctrine: that elderly men be reserved, honorable, prudent, sound in faith, in love, in patience, teaching what is right, that they may train the younger to be wise, to love, to be discreet, chaste, gentle, obedient. In the lives of most people there is probably such an elder-usually a teacher-whose constancy and understanding, whose humor and wisdom, we never forget. Such a man was Mr. Reilly. John H. Reilly-loved, honored, and obeyed, a teacher for over a quarter of a century. Most of us present today knew him little, others knew him more fully. Mr. Reilly- loved, honored, and obeyed. Obedience he secured. A graduate of Holy Cross College, Mr. Reilly entered the teaching profession with eagerness tempered with humor. He loved to tell of his first day in study hall, how a group of girls had brought a box of candy with them, how they offered the new teacher a candy, how he accepted, not one piece, but the entire box to their dismay. Obedience he had secured, but always tempered with humor and kindness. Honor was granted to him. Mr. Reilly earned a bachelor of arts degree from Holy Cross College. He received the master of arts degree from Brown University. Before coming to Drury he taught at a number of institutions including Fordham University. He was named head of the English department at Drury in 1931, and served as vice principal of Drury High School since 1941. Love came last-love of students, associates, and friends for a teacher who was kind without being softg who was understanding, but not too much, whose private happiness was closely allied with Drury, a school with which he was associated for 28 years-28 years of growing mellow, growing more tolerant, more humorous, and always more beloved by those who knew him. Mr. Reilly--the name stirs a thousand recollections of old times: the human Mr. Reilly -his obvious pleasure at the approach of fishing season-the gift packages of bait which appeared mysteriously on his desk, the intellectual Mr. Reilly with his evident relish of the famed Cyrano de Bergerac, of Macbeth, of words themselves, the loyal Mr. Reilly whose lifelong loyalty to Drury High School will never be forgotten. As William Cullen Bryant has said: Thou art gone, the abyss of heaven Hath swallowed up thy formg yet, on my heart Deeply has sunk the lesson thou hast given, And shall not soon depart. -FREDERICK KURTIS BRESSETTE
