SUPERLNTENDENT OP SCHOOLS THE WILL TO PEACE Man has talked of peace, yet lived with war, from the time of earliest recorded history. Must this always be so? I think not, I hope not. How, then, must man be made aware of the folly of such a way of life? As a peace-loving people, we Americans feel that only by education can we change man's way of life. Therefore, only by world-wide education is the achievement of peace possible. Through education we can raise the standard of living of man. When we raise his standard of living, he achieves a degree of personal gratification through the wants he has satisfied. Thus, we may raise the hope for civilization that wars as we have known them -- wars of physical violence -- will cease. On you, the Class of 1954, rests a share of this responsibility. Acquire learning, not just for the material things that accrue to you, but so that you may be a happier person living in a happier world, in which the aim of peace on earth, good will to men is an accomplished fact, and not just a sweet aphorism.
