SUPERLNTENDENT OP SCHOOLS THE WILL TO PEACE Man has talked of peace, yet lived with war, from the time of earliest recorded history. Must this always be so? I think not, I hope not. How, then, must man be made aware of the folly of such a way of life? As a peace-loving people, we Americans feel that only by education can we change man's way of life. Therefore, only by world-wide education is the achievement of peace possible. Through education we can raise the standard of living of man. When we raise his standard of living, he achieves a degree of personal gratification through the wants he has satisfied. Thus, we may raise the hope for civilization that wars as we have known them -- wars of physical violence -- will cease. On you, the Class of 1954, rests a share of this responsibility. Acquire learning, not just for the material things that accrue to you, but so that you may be a happier person living in a happier world, in which the aim of peace on earth, good will to men is an accomplished fact, and not just a sweet aphorism. Robert N. Taylor Superintendent of Schools PRINCIPAL Ol: DRURY Congratulations to the Class of 1954. Recently Dean Melby of New York University said that every youth should have the opportunity to develop to his highest level according to his interests and ability. I most sincerely hope that the members of the Class of 1954 have had such an experience in Drury. I Wish each and everyone in the class happiness and success in the yeafrs ahead. As we think back, it seems like yesterday when we climbed the same stairs for the first time. It was a bright September morning when we entered Drury as Freshmen, nervous but full of enthusiasm. Many of the upper classmen tried to confuse us by sending us in all directions, but this year for the first time there was to be the elimination of the lipstick smearing initiation, and in its place there was to be a Field Day. This event was a competitive affair between Freshmen and Sophomores. It consisted of many sports events which in the end found us Freshmen winning. We had gotten off to a good start. We entered into our school activities with the Freshman Reception. This was a wonderful dance because we were now formally accepted by the upper classmen. We were thrilled that year when our football team took the Berkshire Crown . Before we knew it Christmas vacation was here and after that, our mid-year examinations. Then came the time we all had waited for - our summer vacation and the fact that we were no longer Freshmen. After our summer vacation we returned this time as Sophomores. Our first event was the F reshman-Sophomore Field Day, where we once more took honors. We had our class election, choosing David Dickey as president, Shaun Hawthorne as vice-president and Nancy Philie as secretary-treasurer. We all looked forward to our Sophomore Frolic which had an Indian theme. Christ- mas vacation came and went and we found ourselves in the middle of exam- inations again. It was during this year that two of our most popular teaclhers left. They were Mr. Cuazzo and Mr. Scarpitto. Before we knew it, summer vacation was here again. Our junior year found us proud upper classmen. We again elected David Dickey as our worthy president, Nancy Philie secretary and Polly Bowes as treasurer. During this year three new teachers joined the faculty to replace those who had left. They were Mrs. Risi, Mrs. Valenti and Mr. Kelly. We were able to show what artistic skill we had in our class by having a talent show for a morning assembly. We voted this year to have a new style class ring, breaking a long tradition at Drury. WVe also changed the date of the Winter Prom from Christmas to Thanksgiving recess. At Christmas we had a rest only to come back to mid-year examinations. Honor students of our class became members of the Nu Sigma Epsilon Honor Society. As the year progressed we put on our class play, a humorous mystery called Home Sweet Homicidev. During the year our guidance director, Mr. Royal, put on a Job F airv, a program in which the students met representatives from different colleges. As the year came to a close, we put on the Senior Prom. Again we made a change. Instead of being at the Masonic Temple it was held at the new Creylock Elementary School. This dance was a success and a won- derful Way to bid the Seniors farewell. In September we again journeyed to our home on the hill, but this was to be our last time, for we were now Seniors. This year the field day was ex- tended to all classes, and this time we fought alongside the Sophomores. To lead us through the many Senior activities, we elected David Dickey as pres- ident, Boy Clark and Nancy Philie as vice-presidents, Polly Bowes as secretary and Alan Flood as treasurer. For the first time in the history of Drury we had an enqchange program. Thirty wonderful students came from Abilene, Texas, while thirty students from Drufry went to Abilene. Soon came the Senior play, Brother Coosen, a hilarious production. This year the football team again won the Berkshire Crownv. The Thanksgiving Prom came and then Christmas vacation. In the middle of the year our capable guidance director, Mr. Royal, left, and his work was placed in the capable hands of Miss Cody. Several members of the class of ,54 were honored by being admitted into the Pro Merito Society. Toward the end of the season we had our numerous dances and then it was Spring before we knew it. After this it was time for Senior activities to really come to life: the Class Banquet, Class Night and the first occasion to don our caps and gowns, then our last formal dance, the Senior Reception. Too soon came that momentous occasion - Graduation - when we left behind us Drury on the hill. Elizabeth Demo Carolyn Gigliotti fp :W wif, . Here in North Adams there has been a radical transformation, it is a take-off point for space ships. The main debarkation point is a three mile stretch located at the old site of Curran Highway. Today it is hardly recognizable. Buildings of every size and shape have been erected to carry on the work of modern civilization. Our story begins as three figures are seen approaching The Projectn. Known to us, they are Beverly Cook, R.N., jean Estes, M.S., and Vic Monette, banker. It is early evening as we make our way to the main gate, hand our tickets to the guards, George Bushey and Armand Delisle, and then proceed to headquarters. After making our way to H. General David Dickey and his one-star Generals, George Parrino, Norman Moreau, and Holland Mineau instruct us to report for duty at the Last-Nlinute-Dash-Squad to aid in prep- aration of a missile take-off. As we leave the building, nurses are seen leaving for the base hospital, and in the gathering dusk we make them out to be Car- olyn Gigliotti, Marie Dufraine, Caroline Schulze, Bonnie Blanchard, Iacqueline Accetta, Elizabeth Demo, Angela Cimonetti, and Anita Aubin, all members of the Solar Sick Service . Unsealing our secret instructions -- glued with a formula compounded in the laboratory of Shirley Huttle and Norma Melchiori -- we find that our mission is to be carried out in building 7300 where Henry Doran, disguised as a hedge, is carrying on his counter-spy activities. Inside the building itself, Lucille DiLorenzo, julia Comai, Anne Beaudreau, Joan Dion, Janet Reopell, and lane Dunn are operating the electronic brain . From there, our guide, William LaPlante, leads us to the Fields-of-Operations room where Chief Engineer Ed Chouinard is laboring over plans for an experimental flight to Saturn. Gordie Pike, Dick Norcott. and Felix Puccio are arguing over the vapor density of Saturn's rings. Enlisting our three private secretaries, Lois Hinman, Theresa Bellini and Janet Piaggi, we leave for our workroom to fill in needed data for Mark VII, the code name for our expedition. Giving a call to our Sister Stationv, located at Death Valley, California, we learn of the progress of that station which is studying the agricultural possibilities of that dry area following the theory of Doctor Carl Melcher that ice melts when it is warmed. There, at station Av -- a subsidiary of the Zodiac followers of America, headed by Nancy Philie -- are Indy Dracup, Richard Gould, Alan Flood, Robert DeMarco, Marion Bastien, Donald Cohen and Carl Donega, M.S. This station is also establishing a Crypt of Civilization which will preserve American Cultu-re for the Saturnites. Nola Bullett processes microfilm as do both Henry Noetzel and Ionathan Wooster. Acting as their aide is Janet Pedercini. Feeling the pangs of hunger, we leave for the Dynamo Dinette owned by Gene Franceschini where we indulge in holes and java Ccoffee and doughnuts for the uninformedj. Paul Puricelli and Earl Mullett are seated in a booth eating space patties a la king and we find that they daily commute to Death Valley where they change typewriter ribbons. After leaving the D.D., our eyes focus upon a squadron of the Auxiliary Space Legion consisting of Omer Babeu, Daniel Bouvier, joe Cozzaglio, Ronald Franzoni, Raymond Garand, Verne Gould, William Lanoue, Trueman Randall, Richard Murdock and Bernard Anderson. George Parisien and Arnold Senecal issue space masks while Leno Simonetti and Norman Risch are mechanics for the rocket cruisers. In the brisk night air we go to the Grand Central Terminal, Supersonic Division, to finish our last-minute shopping. Vic went to a barber shop where he met the owner, Francis Risch and Bev and lean went to the dress shoppe managed by Polly Bowes and Gertrude NVein. Later we have our maps drawn up by the 'iBob Genesi, Kenny Raina. and Norm Miller Tlravel Servicev. Elaine Burdick, Clare Pedercini, Audrey Mumford, and ,Ioan Rice are employed as telephone operators in the main lobby of the William Morin Building, and as we pass through on our way to see the pressure gauge maker, Ronnie Sacco, we think of our journey. Bev suggests a visit to the Cliff Hunkler Super Market for something to eat on the trip. fTimes have changed but girls havenitj Time for departure. The information comes for the take-off from Sal Ferrara and Dave Racicot. Inside we observe the decorations, compliments of Al Murray and Eleanor Wright. Informed that Dick Daniels and Normand Richard are to pilot us, we feel secure. Assisting them, as navigators, are Don Sherman and Jim XVhitney. Looking about the rocket we see Ruth Cummings, Shirley Duprat, Nan Collins and Harriet Murphy, our stewardesses, and Pat Carpenter, Betty Fletcher and Orlyn Bliss, our medical staff. Pat Cannity serves dS61'llt?llln to people over thirty-five. Now three hours after our departure, Xenus comes into view. Disembark- ing for an hour's stopover, the three of us make our way to the 'rubber planta- tion of Clint Hall. His foremen. Phil Potvin and Robert Lewis, are leading the gangs into the jungle. Their workers are Bill Cimonetti, George Cobb, Charlie Desrosiers, jack Benoit, and Harvey Denault. This plantation is tremendous, housing a complete medical staff consisting of Kathy Lewis, Bonnie Bacon, Agnes Luczynski and joy LeSage. Stablemaster is Kenny Maltese who aids Dick Lesure in taking care of Martian mules. We take a cab, manned by Fran Keating, back to the ship. Six new passengers have come aboard: Pete Filicetti, lawyer, Lenny Goldman, salesman for the Interplanetary Traveling Medicine show, Audrey Kronick, Marcia Gamari, Melissa jones, and Donna Lanoue who are instructors of 'Romantic' languages. Also departing are Louie Iandran, Bette Gray, Marilyn King, joan F ield, Franny Douglas, and Audrey Holland who are all students at the newly established School of Aeronautics. Donald Adams and ,lane Karrey are their instructors. Another take-off and, within three minutes, we are at the Floating Stratospheric gardens, shopping center of the Universe. The Michael Hirshinary is our first stop where We replenish our supply of 'cesser-tout' Covercomes gravity's pullj and are attended by Doris Hartman, and Valerie Gattuso. With two hours left we stop at the 'Last Chance Casinoi, owned by Patsy Montesanti. The music is provided by Steve Battory, George Murray, and Pete Iennings, while the entertainment is provided by Agnes Romanelli, Emery St. Cyr, Joan Brown, and Roy Clark. Settings for the acts were designed by Elizabeth Brown and Liz', wants it known that she did not paint the piano chartreuse. That was the work of Ronnie Durant. The culinary duties were performed by Pat O'Shea, Mary Melito, Pat Truehart and, as chief chef, we have Dick Barbeau. Florence Varuzzo serves our food and after dinner rumba lessons are given by the able jerry Schmidt. Having finished our visit here, 7 we leave for the last lap of our itinerary. The night is calm and tranquil as we watch the Riviera of the Universe disappear from view. Head Stewardess Caro- line Wooda1'd tells us we are approaching Saturn and should prepare for a landing. Leaving the ship at this port of call are Bessie Wilson and Ann Pro- vencher, both noted scientists who are working with lean. They are working on a means of correcting temperature and pressure on a satellite of Saturn. Yes, we have arrived on Satuirn, and our second contact with human life is Lillian Phelps who landscapes gardens and Al Rudnick who is a grape presser in the vineyard of William McDowell. The medical staff is quite adequate. with jim Maroni, psychiatrist, and Virginia Rosasco, Nancy Roy, Claire Martin, Erman Marony as medical technicians and Fred Partridge, chiropodist. Reita Tanner and lane Thibert are elevator operators. As surgeons we have Francis Cardinal and Ioseph Ciempa. Serving as optometrist is jim Maxymillian. Keep- ing shop in the downtown district are Bette McCrea and Barbara Beaton who run a Upizzav shop and cater to visitors from distant planets. Running a statis- tician's bureau is Ann Bliss. Our Lindy Regaioli heads the paper hangers' union. A sportscaster from Saturn is Rod Canedy who is announcing the l,000th. D.H.S. Compatible Color T.V. broadcast from this planet. Eskil Peterson is sending out the first Ntelewavev between Saturn and Earth. Our mountain climbers are Leo Mastroianni and Cyril Sprague who will attempt to climb Mount Higher-Than-It-Ought-To-Be. On their way down they hope to find the lost tablet of How to Light Three on a Matchu which will be translated for humanity by Arlene Snopek with the help of Linda Matney. Eleanor Sprague and Eleanor Thibert have started an Eleanor Fan Club. jacqueline McLain and Ruth Perras have turned to Genealogy. Angelina Romeo and Barbara Zepka have made a new type of paper clip that defies gravity. Ioan Bissaillon heads a corporation which makes permanent wave lotion for French poodles. This was the beginning of a new practice which we hope will continue for years to come. On September 30, 1953, the first Exchange Croup consisting of thirty students arrived here at North Adams from Abilene High in Texas. The students from Abilene High School were welcomed by the thirty exchange students from Drury, the mayor, the principal and SOIT16 of the faculty. During their stay here they visited many industries and outstanding places in North Adams. They also attended movies of the Berkshire Hills in the winter time. The entire Exchange Croup attended these amusements together. There were parties, dances and the presentation of the Key to the City. On April 25, 1954, our Drury Exchange Croup repaid the visit to Abilene, Texas, where they were guests of their Texas partners. The Drury Students included in their trip such places as Niagara Falls, Chicago, and Washington. Cheerleaders Synonymous with energy and spirit are Druryis cheerleaders. These nine girls have been instrumental in guiding our football and basketball teams to their many wins. In their pert, blue uniforms, they present a neat picture. Led by their captain, Nlary Melito, they are: Frances Douglas, Cynthia Crosier, Bette Lou Mahoney, .Ioan Dion, lane Wright, Sandra Whipple, Doris Hartman, and Barbara Crocker. Drury started its season against the best the Connecticut Valley League could throw at them, Northampton, the leagueis top team. Northampton came all prepared for their second win. Co-Captain Dave Dickey scored on a forward pass from Ronnie Durant for our lone score. Northampton won 20-6. Next in line was the second best from the Connecticut Valley League, Chicopee, an experienced and elite crew. In their backfield was Tom Skypeck, the most outstanding back on the team. He enabled them to down Drury 20-0. Outstanding for Drury were Jim Whitney and Dick Milanesi. Berkshire League finally opened, and Drury was quick to come forward with a victory, downing St. 'Ioseph's of Pittsfield, 19-6, a hard fought tilt that saw the lead change hands frequently. Outstanding for Drury was Peter Fili- cetti, Dave Dickey who smashed through for one touchdown, and Ronnie Durant sprinting for another. Durant tallied the only extra point. Our cheering squad was aided by the backing of thirty students visiting us from Abilene, Texas. The following week the most gratifying win of the year came with an impressive victory over Pittsfield, 225-12. Drury outclassed its oldtime opponent on both offense and defense. Touchdowns were made by Milanesi, West, and Whitney. On the road Drury played Springfield Classical in a tight battle for three periods, until Milanesi and Speedy,' Filicetti caught that touchdown fever and rolled up 26 points. Drury defeated Classical, 33-7. On a rain-soaked field in Springfield, Drury took on Trade in what proved quite a clash. Behind in the first half 7-0, Dave Dickey speared into the end zone, and the extra point was tallied by Milanesi, making the score 7-7. The game was in a deadlock until the fourth quarter when Drury scored again ending the game with the score 14-7. Drury smothered Turners Falls by the tally of 34-7, but it proved costly as All-Berkshire quarterback, Ronnie Durant was injured. Milanesi scored twice on long runs, Hawthorne on an intercepted pass, Durant on a -17 yard run, and Dickey on a sensational plunge. Extra points were scored by Durant. Filicetti, and WVhitney. With two up and one to go for the Berkshire Crow'n, Drury marched into Adams on Armistice Day to retain the crown. On a march down field, even after being stalled with a 15 yard penalty, the Blue Devils scored on reliable jim VVhitney,s plunge into the end zone. Dickey tallied the extra point. Adams came back vigorously on a pass for the pay-off. Conversion was missed. so at half time it stood Drury 7 and Adams 6. In a hard fought third quarter Adams scored again. Then with four minutes left in the game and fourth down, 18 to go, Iohnny Allen nailed Bill Morin with a pass. Bill drove into the end zone for the tally. VVhitney added the extra point. Drury became Champs with the score of 14-12. Last for Drury was a defeat by Greenfield 26-0.
