A special class has been formtd for the benefit of the , non-swimmets by Mr. St.,Pierre, the swimming inltructor, The last hour is spent by the swimmers in a water festival of their own. , ' ' . . Swimming is educational and healthy and We, the boys of the, North-edams Trode1School,'thank Mr. McCann and Mr. Cdhghlin for arranging the classes. Also Mr. Batty and Mr., St. Pierre for their cooperation. i K . .4-I FAIR PLAY Being the champion of champions in fair play, the world expects us to live up to the exalted title at all times. If we discard our f.ne principle of sportsmanship when our fine men hang up rifles, then we no longer deserve the honors we have so gloriously won. ,Our students are a true exemplification of the young manhood of the country, and part of the burden of upholding the titles 'on by the United States at the llympic Games rests squarely upon .heir shoulders. . ' ' How can students of Drury assume this respOnsibility?l By playing the game at all times and never for one second losing sight of the ideals of good sportsmanship, at all sport meetings, baseball,. football and in the class rooms, officials are appointed to make T certain that each contestant stays within the rules at all times, The spectatorsf-especially our American audiences, are the first to decry an unearned advantage, or to protestl against foul tactics, By carrying these sentiments into our every day life we perpetuate the ideals of our nation and add to our national prowess. Perhaps it has never been thought of in this manner, but when Q student takes an unfair advantage he ia figuratively speaking, strik- ing a foul blow, below the belt, When he fails to put forth his best iforts in class he is calling a iaul ball Hfair.H When he growls because he warms the bench he is llitting after the bell has rung.F When a team fails it is the players who are to blameg Sometimes we blame the principal when the school standard is low. If, however, every man in this school were willing to bear his share of responsibility and to do just a little more than his share the school would rise immediately to excellent, And now as tn the problem of recognizing constituted authority. Ev ry min in the vvrfu -'def is rezponcioia to 9 chori 1,1 is actions, fvcsvforc tr f ioik is a musty . On the football team Zhu quarter back calls the plans, are other members of the tea: ycrfcrm the individual assignments that the play calls for, Nhen all Ewa-sion in the matter in which they are supposed to, the play Hclicks' ,nd W gain is made, Success depends just as much on blocking line J as upon actual carrying of the L It is the same in school, Somecn, has to do the blocking and line ot a Everybody can not call the playme-ani if they did--only failure would result The principal calls them, the teacher enforces them in the class room. The system is adequate. In other words it is still-a matter of playing the games with all members ncalling them right,W n 4 4 THE SHOP We have recently started a program of remodeling our shop for the purpose of appearance and for greater efficiency, The first step in our reconversion was to construct individual benches supplied with the tools most commonly used during the course of the day, We have also undertaken the job of painting our machines to further improve the appearance of the shop. Perhaps thp most sizable job that has come up is the construction of a new tool cri . The undertaking is now fairly wsll advanced and our shop is shaping 1p Milton Sartori' w x s We wonder what it is in Adams that seems to attract the attention of Steve Amato. A Blonde perhaps??? Its ceiling is only SOOO fta which is comparatively lowp in these modern times. This machine, differing in construction from the ordinary air- plane, has two propellersm One, a large 4 bladed propeller, is located directly above the pilot. This creates a force which drives the ship up and down. The other is a two bladed propeller situated in the Each end of the ship and tends tc drive the ship forward. ,Q hz ' N A-large and powerful motor is required to furnish power for these two blades therefore making the plane A bit heavy. There is more ,hauee qor wear and break-downs because of its many moving parts. . r This ship's controls are com- plicated making few people capable of operating it correctlyk Pewwle of the ordinary class could not afford such a machine, not only because of its high purchase price, but because of its expensive maintenance. The helicopter is still a wrink1e1in.the field of aviation. It has many good points and ideas but tkere -re maiv flaws bw be ironed Despite its numerous and Jaluabl uses in the present war it is not ref well lzxed ov our flyers, In a survey iaken Lnrcughout the rcuntry only apouo 152 of the pilots f or helicopters, 4 a a ANCHORS AWEIGH Whatls happened to the Trade Sc'- Classes? Last year due to volunteer labor, the farmers were able to raise a record crop. This year more than ever the people throughout the world are depending on the United States for food to keep body and soul togetherg So this summer make 'it your business to volunteer for farm work. If you have any spare land plant a small wlctory garden and raise the foods that are scarce to buy. VHQLQ your country.n UFood is my . The team was in excellent shape due to the coaching of Ray Fawcetta Ray taught us a lot about basketball and his policy was that a team is not a team unless it fights as a unit. He also showed us plays and had us practice them until we knew them back- wards.: We wish to thank Coach. . Raymond Fawcett for his time and effort that he so willingly gave us. The team bought bhue trunks and white jerseys as a standard outfit anl this greatly improved the appearance of the entire team. They were defeated a number of times by weaker teams but they never gave up and proved they were at their best under pressure. Everyone should take his hat off to this team and its fine coach for Coach Hosley brought it home with that Championship. 44+ APR. 13 and 14. 1944- Credit to Mr. Chambers for the Drury Minstrel -it was wonderful- singing, dancing. jokes and all the things which make minstrels great successes. Coach At the beginning of the season Drury's chances of copping tne Berkshire County Champion- ship seemed very slim. VVith the development 'of a very strong forward wall, and an efficient, hard-running backfield, the trick was accomplished. Credit belongs to Coach Del Negro for this development. They were a hard fighting, hard driving team and they deserved all the glory that was heaped upon them. +04 JUNE, 1944- Senior Banquet, Senior Reception - Class Night, Graduation -such a whirl of events! It just doesn't seem true that four such wonderful years have come to an end. We're not ashamed of the tears that have gathered in our eyes.
