Hearing talks by students of other schools and joining in group discus- sions with them, our delegates reah7ed that DHS is a school of which to be proud. In a regular meeting the STUDENT COUNCIL discusses student opinion expressed through representa- tives and makes plans for special proiects during the year. Some of these proiects were outdoor pep as- semblies, News Nlagaline of the Screen, the Christmas Sock Hop, the March of Dimes Talent Show, Observ- ance of Brotherhood W'eek, and Tacky Day. -rf 93 Nl .h ,- '-.iii a . . i ...ff l X 0 ' L' -Q el? f ' l.r,'i: Ti- 'i -In A . This honor was given to the senior boy and girl who had the highest grade average for all four high school years. In winning these awards, our students deserve much credit for their diligent work and cooperation. but could they have attained this goal without the helping hand of their teachers?? Mrs. Hess, our librarian, always went out of her way to help a student find material he needed. Her library was a pleasant place in which to study. Mrs. Pinkston, with unfailing good humor, helped in all problems pertaining to her classes and modern day life in general. Her teaching of tolerance and understanding made her pupils more able to live in harmony with their fellowmen. Mrs. Apple, al- ways sympathetic and understanding with all her duties, was never too busy to help a student to under- stand new problems or catch up on work. Mrs. Kane employed all devices and helps such as films, records and posters to aid us in understanding our work. These teachers, in addition to all the others, helped us to win. We are proud of Doris and Dale who achieved the highest honor our school had to offer. lfI5l'I'll I'II'iSS 'I.If'VdYld!l. Central State College, B.A. IOL' ANN lllXf1lfX', Sofia A-S, HAZEI. Miss liriend. who in her tiriendlx, smiling fashion, was always reads' to help students even after school hours, chose the student who received the science award. .lohn Robert lshmael was given this award for outstanding work in sClL'llCU. No one worked harder nor helped out in so many activities of the school as Nlrs. Kirkman who encouraged her students to do grade work. She iudged who was worthy of the commercial award, which this year was won by Anne Freeman. Nliss Camp drilled us in the finer points of linglish and taught us to appreciate literature. As our dramatics director she caused us to love all activities connected with play production and spurred some on to become professionals. She chose the students worthy of being best thespians. Nlarland Rhodes was the boy chosen, and since two girls were equally good, Donna Sue Black and Nancy XY'adley shared honors as outstanding girl thespians. Mr. Gibson, science teacher and basketball coach, by his genial personality and exacting training princi- ples turned out both good students and good athletes, and helped along with the other teachers in encouraging us to do our best. These awards were tnade in a special assembly near the end of school with Mr. Kirltman helping in the presentations. Vfe learned that hard work was necessary to obtain something worthwhile. ,,,,,,,q-xr'vFW .. v - ' ' ,,... .K ff? It made us feel good to he recognized this way after we had struggled and slaved through the vear. Again, we could not have attained this honor without the help of our teachers. Xliss Ciriscom strove to make the girls want to he good homemalsers while Mr. Tidrow tried to get LIN all to realize that two plus two always add up to four. Nlr. Zaumeyer did his best to give us .1 little culture musically, and Mr. Duckett taught us to drive without breaking rules and fenders, and bones. Activities XY'e have many kinds of ACTIVITIIQS in our school, some honorary and others which are open to all. Two of these are BOYS' STATIQ and GIRLS' STATIQ, composed of boys and girls chosen from the upper ten per cent of the iunior class from high schools all over the state. They meet at chosen towns to study government. These are sponsored by the different service clubs of the town, particularly the American Legion and American Iegion Auxiliary. The GOING TO CUI.I.IfGIf qui! was conducted by the University of Tulsa for the brilliant seniors who didn't shine so brightly when called on to give the Gettysburg Address and nursery rhymes, Inci- dentally, Donald Parker won the S25 savings bond. The 4-II CLUB was composed of students from all classes interested in the many activities that help make a good wide-awake citiven. Those that ap- peared particularly alert were Bob, Billy Don, and Phillip. The members were interested in the projects offered which ranged from raising farm products to sewing. Their leaders were Miss Lois De Mond and George Maynard. They met once 3 month. It was not under direct sponsorship of the school, but the school encouraged it and helped when possible. ,gon , i 5-' '- z: . . gif I isovs' .xxii taxis' sian, lin fi. ,,K1.f--,l.itk imtsiitt-s, ml.- liadgwcll, lions Odom, Marx Ann lacl-ter. They were always right there at every game, rooting and giving lots of spirit to the teams. They also led in a pep meet- ing before each contest. At every game the red and white of their costumes stood out in the bleachers. The glum looks on the faces of the pep leaders showed we were not often on the winning side, but the smiling faces of our coat lies, Buck, Nloe and lay, Qcensoredl showed that although we did lose, they kept their good spirits, their faith in the teams and the hope that next year we would do better. They were always encourag- ing the players and after each game showed how they could learn from failures. Varsity Basketball Team The enemy gave the VARSITY BASKFTBALI. TFAM a bad time this year, XVe played much the same style of ball as the Oklahoma Aggies, but we had less luck than the Cowboys. Our game record was 12 wins and 16 losses. liven with our dismal won and lost record, we considered our season successful because we beat our arch-rival, Cushing. 41 to 39 on their court. This feat had not been accomplished in four years. The other high spot was a second place trophy, won in the Durant Tournament. Our leading scorer for the season was cen- ter Harrold Vick Vickers, a senior. The other seniors were Captain I,arry Patton, John Apple, and Donald Todd. Undergraduate lettermen were joe Garner, Otis Stump and David Seals. Other undergraduate players were John Custer, Buddy Russell and Bob larrctt. Maybe in '53 the Tornadoes will really blow and go. As a losing team always says, just Wait till next year. Our defensive average for the season was 56,2 points per game and our offensive average was 33.7 All we needed was six more free throws each game. 147..
