Yhis world struggle against the forces of evil has caused all of us to change our thinking and plans for the future, but our plans would not be of any value unless the issue is settled in favor of Freedom and Democracy. Our high school is going through changes, as we individuals are, and the effort will be to make students strong for the offensive action we must take against those who would enslave the world. Amezica must be the Nation to determine the peace but to do that she must determine the outcome of the war and it will be those who are now in highschool or have recently been graduated who will make the greatest contribu- tion to this peace. What can we do? We can determine our abilities and develop them to the highest so we can be of real value to our country and others who are counting on us to help them. All branches of the armed service, as well as lndustry, are asking, almost demanding, that boys have a strong foundation in mathematics and science. Girls are being called into production and into many fields of service that demand good training. Each can be ready for that call that is sure to come. Let us no longer think of defense but of offense and determine that the best we can do is the least we can do. America and Freedom will win with the determination of students and graduates of Drumright High School and all other high schools dedicated to the ideal of the Freedom of the World. FRANK D. HESS The Gusher is an accurate printed account of the activities at our high school After graduation we no longer think of it as a project sponsored by the rnem- bers of the graduating class but as the seniors' con- tribution to the annals of Drumright High School. The members of the staff, through their work as such, have gained a much broader conception of the high school as an institution of learning and appreciate more fully the value of the training offered both from the practical and cultural points of view, lt is also hoped that through their efforts as members of the staff, they have learned the value of work Only through individual and group effort, wise and careful planning can such a task be brought to a successful conclusion, The present National emergency is re-emphasizing the value of the fundamental or tool subjects. Although our so-called extra-curricular activities seem more in- teresting and attractive, we cannot escape the intensive study and the tedious drill and practice connected with the mastery at English, science, mathematics, and other similar courses, if we would be of service to our fellow- men and our country. So let us dedicate ourselves to a program of rigorous mental, physical, and spiritual train- ing, so that when the time comes we shall be able to deliver effective blows at the enemies of freedom and lustlce. Candidates eligible to membership must have a scholarship rank in the first third of their respective classes, and must have spent at least one year in the secondary school electing such students. The group is limited to fifteen per cent of the upper classmen, ten per cent from the Senior class and five per cent from the Junior class. Juniors who were selected last year and retain membership in the society are Ella Rose Badger, Bettye Geyer, Betty Clanton, Glenagene Berger and Jim Russell. The officers for this year are, President, Ella Rose Badger, Vice-President, Jim Russell, Secre- tary-Treasurer, Betty Jeanne Clanton, .901 fe onor ociefy The State Honor Society is as its name implies, an honor society for the high school students of Oklahoma. To attain membership in this society, the student must have a scholastic average which IS rated in the upper ten per cent at the school enrollment. The purpose of the State Honor Society is to promote higher standards of scholarship among the students in the high schools of Oklahoma. Membership in the society is not only a reward for work already done in dramatics, but it is also evidence of a serious desire on the port of each student to do better work in the future. The Drumright group-Katherine Cornell Troupe No, 277-was founded in l935, and since that time has played an important part in the dramatics of this school. Drummerettes hold the unique distinction of having won every contest they' have en- tered. Since l935 they have been the champion corps of the state of Oklahoma. This year ll942l, due to the conditions of the times, they withdrew from all contests that they might be better able to carry on their part of the war effort. This they have done by participating in many patriotic programs and parades. The Drummerettes were co-sponsors with the Junior Chamber of Commerce of the first Drum and Bugle Corps Clinic-Festival to be held in the United States. This event was held last November and brought in such distinguished personages as Boh Makovsky of Oklahoma A. and M. Collegeg Wm, F. Ludwig and son of Chicago, Mr, Frank Hubert and Mr. Gay, Directors of the Bengal Guards of Orange, Texas, and Milburn E. The Usher Corps was organized in i935 by the Student Council for the purpose of having better order in assemblies and to have ushers for our auditorium plays and programs. Helen Louise Moore was elected from the Student Council to organize the Usher Corps for this year. Mr. Glenn Taylor and Miss Agatha Martin were the sponsors chosen from the faculty.
