Text from Pages 1 - 248 of the 1978 volume:

uin- in a small and rural community, the local citizens eagerly awaited the arrival of Emory University faculty from Oxford, Ga., which marked a distinct change in their lifes- tyles. From this moment onward, the com- munity anticipated increased growth and commerce, and perhaps, a new indepen- dence. Gradually, as time passed and the area became more densely populated, the citizens also realized that in order for them to match their community's growth, they must establish a local school for the children of the incoming Emory staff members. In it's earliest days, the school which is now known as Druid Hills was begun as an elementary school. It was started in 1919 and housed in the Fishburne Building, still presently located on Emory Cam- pus. ggi, li gifs aria, ululll T T f f SX 1 WWW iii: I H 51 up fl' We it E , fi' 55.2 W' rs. As the school evolved and the students achieved a new sense of unity, new traditions and cultures came hand in hand a pride similar to that of their name- sake developed. The Druids, those mystical pagan priests of a dead reli- gion, seemed to reflect the modern ideals of the new community school. uw' -An...,,,,-A W-.N 4.4 Q X S xiQ .WA I 'W ix A S 'S IN-'. They soon revised this manner of thinking when they realized that the system was, while se- lective as far as materials go, one which could not be denied the general public. Secondly, the Druids felt that the student should rely on the written word more than the exercise of his memory. Likewise the students of Druid Hills coped with their instruction. xx .g rv- X X-v'w W X A ,l xx i N if it 'N AX XX F.-L ' J'-Ng - ' ff' M' . x x Y , wx. Within three years the North Building was constructed, original- ly to house elementary school students. By 1959 it ceased to be an elemen- tary school with the con- struction of Fernbank and became an official part of the high school campus. There is also a constant flow of new faces blending with the old. Among the members of our teaching staff is a person who is both fresh to the scene AND already a legend. In the few years she has been at Druid Hills, this lady has dabbled with the arts, sponsoring drama activities, language clubs, and literary meets. She is a devoted counselor and a dedicated sponsor. She is a friend to the student, participating as enthusiastically as she teaches. On November 11 and 12, under the theme of Hysterical History , grades eight through twelve pre- sented one of the most outstanding Stunt Nights in our hysterical history. With a comical Pilgrims Regressf' the Freshman Class pulled off a winner. A close second, the Sophomores' H24 Carat Gold Fever proved the Gold Rush of 1849 to be a hoax. The Class of 1979 dazzled the au- dience with their third place Asp Me No Questions and I'll Give You No De-Niles. The eighth graders' St. Val- entine's Day Massacre and the Senior's Looney Tunesv did not place but were the perfect opening and conclusion to a memorable and fun-filled evening. .psy W 49 I 1 l I - I ui fu sf is if . 1 M Vykk. The weather is brisk, and as the immediate eye is on volleyball, the distant eye follows the cross-country runner. All the athletes participating in these sports share one thing in common: they all derive a certain energy from the crispness of the season. The renewed vigor and spirit that accompany Fall affect these sportsmen's performance. There is a tension in the air that is invigorating, extracting the best of the athletes, and reflecting their best in their sports. 2 nsmsmuusilxmiz. I tu' ri! Once, while en- gaged in pondering, he happened to wander off the campus, and wander- ing back on found himself in the company of three nice bears. How was your lunch'? , inquired the first bear. Show me your open campus card, requested the second, and the third big hear said, Come with me to the office. Once upon a time there was a beautiful young cheerleader who was having a party to celebrate her graduation. Everyone was invited, except for one very boring young man. All the Administrative Assistants wished to give the girl a good graduation gift. The Counselors helped her choose a college to supplement her education, and gave her several scholarships. The secretaries compiled her transcripts and helped type applications to mail to the colleges. The Librarian referred her to several career oriented books. Just then, the boring young man arrived furious at not being invited to the party. For revenge, he put the cheerleader into a deep sleep, in which she would remain until kissed by an athlete. Nl C. After several days the eggs hatched into a variety of little parabolas, circular functions, tetrahedrons, and other mathematical concepts. The teacher, thrilled with all these new arrivals, kept these concepts and the students have been contending with them ever since. 1' v ii 1 Q' -.. . 1 Lxxxtx ' fm' f fi Adrian Malone Philip Churchman Beverly Wright John Hampton Louisa Riley Lynn Nation Geraldine Simmons ver- Nei Noreen Green Margaret Davis Jennie Flinchum Joe Fualkner A-3' Annabelle Thwaite Bobby Crowson .. These classes establish a division within the Kingdom, but do not divide the Kingdom itself. It is not wise to outrank your own class, as you are born into it, but it is quite possible for your class to progress as a whole. In the Kingdom of Classes, you always stick together, the Kings see to this. Having struggled for twenty season to reach the top in this feudal system, the Senior Kings maintain a firm control of leadership. Preparing for the more vast outer Kingdoms, these Kings realize the virtues of patience and justice and use of intellect, and though they are Kings they exercise these virtues far beyond their duty. The Kings are in control, but abide by the rules of the Empire in exemplifying the merits of ability. Nancy LOWS Secretary Barbara Llbowsky, Treasurer Sr hat? The Nobles are a largely unified lot, willing to accept their diversities and use them to their ad- vantage, combining differences to form a strong front. In preparing for the inheri- tance the nobles are spirited, vocal, and assume the characteristics that make po- tential Kings great. 1 ... A No matter how freely we learned to express ourselves, or how freely we conducted ourselves we were molded, shaped, discovered through a touch of artistry. Our reflections are not mere mirrored, images, nor are they glimpses of others in passing. They are watered silk portraits, and we are the objects, our colors running together under the touch of youth's brush. 229 ...A N Welcome to the wild menageriel Some say this is a zoo, but you and I know that we are far too cultured to be a zoo. I'd say we were more of a potpourri of personalities, a blending pot of ideas and facts and ambitions. And the pot gets too hot, you say? Well when the heat is too hot, get out of the kitchen! But it's not so bad here, really. Sometimes, I feel like another caged animal, but there is the freedom to create and imagine, if not roam. And when I look at all my brothers and their beautiful structures and hear their various calls, I realize the comforts in crowds. I am but one voice in this small menagerie, but when we all speak together you know we are a powerful bunch. Q Six?
