All teachers can teach, but rarely can an individual make learning such pleasure. Because of her we have visited ever f h ' ' ' y corner o t e globe to such an extent that we actually l1Ved for a Whlle with the inhabitants. She has rendered us helpless with her magnetic charm and successfully achieved her ambition of making us color our world. Wise to the ways of students she can use her experience in deal' 'th ' ' ' ' mg W1 problems, resulting not only 1n making her pupils better students, but also in making them better persons. It is because of this compassionate warmth and outstandin ab'l't th t g 1 1 y a We lovingly dedicate the SAGA of 1977 to our very own Mother Away From Home - MRS. WINIFRED HAGAN F I xx14 ,gf 1 ALL IN THE FAMILY , SAG -l A I 1 1 2 In the last hour of the day, a group of students, with varied interests and concerns congregate in room 202. There they fall to work on layouts, copy, and schedules. Sometimes they are in har- mony, sometimes they argue, sometimes they talk, and usually they try to work. Throughout the first and second quarters they toil steadily, behind closed doors. Finally the day arrives when the last layout is in Ca sign of relief is heardl. Then they wait in anticipation to see their creation - the SAGA of 1977. 5 6 i n 1 I l 1 i I 3 1 1 1 i 1 i 6 l E ! His efforts have earned us recognition as being one of the finest schools in the county. He is also responsible for improving morale among the students. For his fine job we pay tribute to our principal, Mr. Dixon M. Glover. JON WALLACEg B.S. Florida State University, M.S. Florida State, Ed.Spec. Georgia Stateg Assistant Principal. GO ASK WALLACE When a man can effectively carry out the difficult role of assistant principal and still earn the respect and admiration of the students, then he is a unique individual. Jon Wallace is not only a disciplinarian but also a concerned administrator who responds to the needs of the students. ONE FLEW OVER THE COUNSELOR'S NEST Sometimes we do not realize how much we owe to certain people. Our counselors Eugenia Kelley and Ray T. Dickinson, are two such people. Their work is often unnoticed and we seldom credit them for the number of important jobs they do. Schedule changes, orientations, testing, and college prepara- tions are all handled by our counselors. In short, they can be called the backbone of the school. 600NS'El0RS' RAY DICKINSONQ B.S. Aw, what a shame! e c r e t a r i 9 S l Take a memo: We the stu- dents of Druid Hills High School do hereby decide to thank our secretaries for the great job they have done in keeping the school's paper- work in order. Their talented fingers have never ceased to amaze us when gliding over a typewriter or scribbling hur- ried shorthand. Though te- dious work, it can be very en- lightening to listen to some of the wild excuses students have for checking in and out. The secretaries actually form the nucleus of all the activi- ties carried out Within the ad- ministrative cell. Never for- get: Behind a good adminis- trator, there's an even better secretary. AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAZE Once upon a time there lived some classes who heard wonderful stories of Catherine the Great, saw the maps of Macedonia, discussed the ram- blings of James Oglethorpe, studied the move- ments of people, and felt the magnetism of the eccentric Pied Piper of Wisdom. The students hon- ored and revered several heroes but the tales re- mained tales and were pushed into oblivion as the years passed. Cautiously, it breaks the mantle to imprint a step of knowledge in the cool surface of our mind. Having broken through, it stains and taints our former views. It melts, warmth radiating from the burning energy with which we think, and seeps slowly - every crystal of wisdom - until it is fully absorbed. ,- :,,5f,,,,' K 2 ,Mmm-we .. Fields, where strains of Music drifted aimlessly and players practiced, i Perfecting performances, are deserted. Empty faces Tired of pressures and plagues regain vigor, Incited by the afternoon. The finality. The Noisome halls are hurriedly left, for spent Energies to be replenished to leisure. And then, the Slight anticipation increases to : frenetic joy as it all ends: Summer. .iw 9 w u 5 4255 .,.' A,,,...-.A-f I slip down the halls between classes. You may see me and say hello. I may be ap classmate, an acquaintance, touching your consciousness but not your conscience. I slip through the door of my class, enter, and seat myself. In this room, I slip behind the board and watch the classroom - the collection of faces that I have known. I slip under their eyesg they do not sense my observation. I dart between the auras they project. Finally I slip away from my books, my friends and myself - into the future. Usually I am neither here nor there, but everyone knows what I'm about. L fl The impressions fade as the moments pass. As I look back it is difficult to discern what was real and what was imaginary, but somehow it doesn't seem to matter because only feelings are real. The images which are impressed upon my memory are the times of touching glances and glancing touches. The faces merge, the colors run, only the feelings remain. I w 1 3 , 5 239 i Looking back at this book in the years to come, we will gain new perspective on the courses our lives have taken. This year has an identity all its own, and we have sought to portray its individuality and uniqueness. Each of us has matured as the year has progressed, and we have captured this maturing process with words and photographs we will always remember. We thank our excellent staff and worthy advisor for the hard work and effort they put forth to help create this yearbook. Together we have remembered, perceived, and imagined. w' ,X afar g Karen Whipple Tim Rawls i Co-Editors in Chief .1 -1'QHy,.5 .4 .MQ 59' ,iw in.
