An American is not of any particular race, creed, or color. He is a person from many places, with many cultures. He has 'a Ph.D. or he may not be able to read and write. He may have two houses and two cars or he may not be able to feed his family. Despite the differences, Americans work together for the good of the nation. The bond uniting Americans is tradition - a tradition of freedom for all peoples. An American has freedom. He is free to think and believe as he pleases. He is free to become what he chooses to become. 'The right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is given to him as an American. His freedoms and his rights are protected by a government of Americans, by Americans, for Americans. The people in government - a democracy. Democracy is the basis of all that an American holds dear. His voice in the government insures the protection of his rights as a citizen. He realizes his system is not perfect, yet he would not trade it for any other. He seeks to correct the faults of the system - a system which allows for peaceful change, if change is needed. An American has confidence in his government and in the system of government. He is confident that it will not fail him but will perform for him as it has in the past. An American is proud. He is proud of his nation, of his way of life, and of the accomplishments of his nation and fellow Americans. He is proud of his flag and for what it standsp It is a source of inspiration and a symbol of freedom to Americans everywhere. His flag has flown for two hundred years, in times of war and in times of peace. It has flown around the world and on the moon. Through it all, its meaning has remained untarnished. An American wants peace for all nations, yet he holds his freedom in even higher esteem. An American will pay the ultimate price, his life, in order that this nation may survive. He realizes that the only thing that exceeds that price is the freedom itself. There are those that believe the United States is not the great nation it used to be. As citizens of the United States, they are entitled to their opinion. They are free to think and believe as they choose. Through two hundred years - years of great advancements and change, times of trouble and strife, times of harmony - the principles upon which this nation was founded have remained unchanged for today's American. He is still free. He has democracy to protect his freedom. The United States of America is a nation of which to be proud - yesterday, today, and tomorrow. 28
