She is a true scholar - one who continues to study for the benefit of herself and her stu- dents. Tolerantly, fairly, and with a subtle humor, she sets an example and presents herself in a quiet, unique manner. Her sincere interest in her students and their progress reflects her willingness to give of herself. We dedicate the 1973 Saga to an exceptional person. MRS. The first part is a series of photo essays about the times and life at Druid Hills. The second part is the reference section for looking up organizations, teachers and students. Through the efforts of many people the 1973 Saga has been possible. We would like to thank them for helping us to preserve your memories. Carly Simon V M 559 5- lg fi' of --is-' Q Q f . gli . -f 2 .F , 5 , Q .4 Ullplmul I 1972, Denver Puit Man's best friend L., 2.7 Homecoming Homecoming Day was unmistakable at Druid Hills. Bleary-eyed students after nights of not sleeping ar- rived at school to spend the day speculating on the outcome of the float competition. Hanging out of the windows, they watched the floats that were already in the parking lot and speculated whether all the whole world would be lost in a mechanical failure! Around the middle of the day, there was a mass exodus of students from school to make last minute preparations for the afternoon's parade. The annual traffic-jam was cleared up and finally the floats moved out of the parking lot and paraded by the students and the children at Egleston and Aidemore Hospitals. Amid laughter, cheers, and a few tears, it was announced that 3rd place went to the Class of '75, Znd place to the Class of '74, and 1st place to the Class of '73. Later in the evening at Adams Stadium, the Druid Hills Cross Country and Football teams scored home- coming game victories. Their performances were compli- mented by the mounting of tension as the 1972-73 Homecoming Queen was announced. Out of a lovely court, Miss Beth Glenn was chosen. . The entire day was climaxed by the Homecoming dance held in the Druid Hills cafeteria. Dressed in semi- formal attire, students celebrated the conclusion of an unmistakable day. The events had ended, the memories continued to live on! VP :fs at at . . itat. ff' . . Senior girls selected by the staff vie for the title of Miss Druid Hills by competing in evening gown and talent and having a personal interview with each of eight outside judges. This year's contest theme was Younger Than Springtime. A candlelight stage with arrangments of yellow spring flowers furnished the right setting for the theme. Talents were varied and well-performed. Saga staff members worked hard furnishing the escorts for the contestants, the Master of Ceremonies in debonair David Brach- man, and the lighting and sound under the auspices of maestro Scotty Crawford. John Watson played the grand piano as accompaniment for the Crawford. John Watson played the grand piano as accom- paniment for the contestants in the evening gown division. Each year a new crop of fresh young faces enters the halls of Druid Hills and sub- jects itself to the good-natured abuse of the older and wiser students. Yet everybody is an 8th grader at one time in their lives, and many remember that time in their lives for years. The 8th grader is in a transition - throwing off childish ways and adopting new attitudes and a new life-style. With some anxiety at first, he ex- plores Druid Hills, and slowly but surely, his feeling of being out of place yields to a feeling of warmth. He feels as if he has finally found home and . , . just wait 'til next year. They act as our doctors, ad- visors, psychiatrists, enter- tainers, babysitters and even as our friends. But sometimes they are not as understanding as we would like them to be. We students must admit, how- ever, that teachers do try much harder to help us than to hurt us. 90 i I QQ at mf hi' ta .1 ,,, K, E ggi A-fi F I , If S59 ffm ff V ,fwzfw ww M :M .X .Wm n 1 , www' gl funk' 1 WHY' ' ,,1g'f' rs., ..-Y, . ,Up-v ,.Ll ,L,, , m ?'x fk, jlww-Za. pn . if av .iflll ,, ,.m.M ,xy-1: 4 S mf., . This year's Olympic Games were games that will never be for- gotten-wrought in politics and controversy, and yet ultimately, exhibiting more splendor and pagentry, more athletic grace and ability, and more heart-warming moments than ever before. Once again, hundreds of cultures mixed and a multitude of the finest ath- letes in the world competed against one another, this year in Munich, West Germany. People all over the world cheered their nations and their favorite contestants on to victory. Even the entire world delighted in watching such figures as Russia's petite gymnast, Olga Korbutt, America's gutsy Dan Gable, Australian swimming sensation Shane Gould, and of course, Mark Spitz-who entered seven swimming events and emerged with a phenomenal seven gold medals and with Olympic records for each event in which he participated. The 1972 Olympic Games were the most memorable of all to date. Who can forget the beauty of supposed enemies competing in friendly sportsman- ship, the American sprinters being late for an event, the Israeli-Arab tragedy, and the determination of the West Germans to put on the best Games in the long and storied history of the Olympics. Shalom! The Mini- World of Lunch I love lunch - munch, munch Can we go to lunch? Have a cookie - crunch, crunch And watch the bunch . . . The world at lunch. Lunch is a slice of school so diversified that it is unlike any other time slot. Everyone is doing something different. For some, lunch is last min- ute crammingg for others it is a time to satiate the hun- ger pangs - once they make it through the lines. Towards the end of the line, everyone is single file, but up at the front, the line gets wider and wider - especially if it is Fried Chicken Day. For on those days, everyone is in line for an extra-special lunch. Once one gets his plate, or his milk, if he is a brown- bagger, he can settle down to gabbing and catch up on the latest bit of gossip, or if he doesn't feel like talking, he can sit and watch. 100 Qs? 55735 13535 ' . til-:i.rss,fg:534f55f:r , X , Wfmqqg. 4 in-H-.D ivvf-is ,W 3 'K' y wt ,,.. .,-: 52,2 be at .. s at Q . Members are chosen by the current council for the following year and are representative of each class in the school. Particularly effective are the council talks with individual classes where some form of cheating has been reported. The latter group seems to offer the more personal con- tact, since computers cannot be called upon to give out any warmth unless they happen to explode. eff wfMv :wwmie4um7.4a New students at DI-I beware! One of these however is difficult to describe, for his gifts to his school and his class are extraordinary. We can tell of his leadership as Captain of the Spirit Boosters or President of the Senior Class. We can talk about his gymnastic ability, about his role as P. A. announcer, or his hard work during homecoming. We can commend his friendliness and his loyalty to all of us. But when it comes to the end, we cannot adequately express our admiration and respect for this rare individual. We can only be thankful that it was our pleasure to say that he was one of us. Led by sock-sniffing winner - or loser - TOMMY SOUTHARD, the boys were so obnoxious that they were able to raise S500 for the Junior Class. The class' float - The Fall of Fort Gordon - captured first place in the homecoming float competition. The class' stunt based on the tale of the twelve brothers was victorious in the annual stunt night competition. The senior class production of Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution was a change of pace from the last few years productions. Unity at last achieved, the class of 1973 can say that they graduate together.
