Our 1960 Saga would not be complete unless we recognize one who has meant much to us the four years he has been a member of our team of champions. We have grown and progressed greatly since that first year together, and we, the Senior Class, attribute much of our growth to his teachings of character, courage, loyalty, and, above all, his high sense of fair play. We proudly and respectfully dedicate our Saga to one who stands above others as our friend . . . MR. P. In the past years we have grown very close to each other. We have made acquaintances, the memories of which will stay in our minds eternally. The many experiences we've shared together and the many days of class we've spent together will never be forgotten. The intellect we developed here will be of great importance to us in life, but the gratifying experiences with our friends have molded our personalities. Now we leave to go in many different directions. For many, college will be the next step. For some, jobs and families. Let us always look back with pleasant memories of our Senior year at Druid Hills. W. Dekalb . 20 Druid Hills Avondale . . 26 CAPTAlgljn32:Kg7jl3dVINE5S THE CHAMBLEE GAME CAPTAIN RAY INIASSEY Sen far Hnlflufe There was an air of nervous tension hanging over the Druid Hills stadium on the night of this opening game of the 1959 Season. However this nervousness turned into frenzy during the frantic fourth quarter in which the Druids proved themselves to be a very good foot- ball team. Although Druid Hills controlled the ball in the first half, they were unable to score. However a drive by Chamblee paid off early in the fourth quarter and the score was 7-O. Two minutes later quarterback Richard Hall broke loose and scampered 45 yards for a touchdown, and Hampton Logan kicked the extra point, tying the score. After the kickoff Druid Hills forced a punt and made an inspired 50 yard drive to victory. THE SPRAYBERRY GAME Visions of victory danced in the heads of Sprayberry partisans after the Yellow Jackets scored their second period touchdown, but these visions were soon shattered by the onslaught of a Red Devil offense which scored 35 points in the remainder of the contest. It was an ex- citing game with many long runs, but clearly a decisive victory for Druid Hills. THE ATHENS GAME School spirit reached an all time high on the night that Druid Hills invaded Athens. A mighty roar arose from beautiful Sanford Stadium as Druid Hills took the opening kickoff and marched 60 yards to score in three minutes. The Red Devils calmly added two more touch- downs to complete the 21-0 rout of the Trojans, as delerium prevailed in the Druid Hills cheering section. Druid Hills was the victor in the first of four region games. THE RUSSELL GAME The Russell game was an important one for Druid Hills because it was a region game, and the two teams were meeting with identical records. Neither team was able to score until a fumble by Druid Hills set up a Russell touchdown. The Red Devils seemed to come alive after that and quickly chalked up twenty points and another region victory. THE MARIST GAME Druid Hills entered this game undefeated and untied. From the opening kickoff the game was a terrific defensive battle. The Druids' offense was able to move the ball well against Marist and got inside the twenty-yard line three times only to be repelled by costly penalties. As time ran out it looked as if the game would end in a 0-0 tie, but Marist speedster Charlie Hill broke loose from his own 10 yard line and fled 80 yards before being tackled. The Cadets scored but were immediately assailed by an angry Druid Hills team, which came charg- ing back, but didn't have time to score. Druid Hills won the battle of statistics but lost on the scoreboard in a real heartbreaker. Halfback Massey invades the territory of a determined Athens team. PILEUP Druid Hills emerges the victor in hard fought Hapeville game. I4I A NlGHT AT THE l5Al.l.ET Druid Hills tipitoes past Chamblee. THE MAJORITY RULES An unfortunate Athens ball carrier learns about Druid Hills' defense the hard way as he is apa prehended by a swarm of Red Devil tacklersg led by jim Moore. TH E SMYRNA GAME The Red Devils tried a new passing type offense in this game, but Smyrna held them away from the goal line. Neither team could get a drive started, and, as a result, the majority of the game was played between the 40 yard lines. THE HAPEVILLE GAME llapeville was out-manned, out-classed, and out-played as Druid Hills romped over the Hornets. Early in the first period a fumbled handoff was recovered in the Druid Hills end zone by Hapeville for their only score. Receiving the kickoff, Richard Hall made a forty- yard return to Hapeville's thirty-yard stripe. The Druids promptly scored and added icing to the cake by scoring two more within ten minutes. The great Druid Hills defense did the rest by beating off the attack of the Hornets until the final gun sounded. THE DECATUR GAME The playing field was a sea of mud at game time, but school spirit was not dampened as Druid Hills splashed to a 6-0 win over arch rival Decatur in a rainy homecoming. Decatur's winless Bulldogs could not score against Druid Hills' highly-touted defense, and the Red Devil offensive team had what it took to punch over the winning score. This was an important region game and left the Druids unde- feated in region competition. THE SOUTH WEST DEKALB GAME Druid llills met South West DeKalb for the sub-region championship in a thrilling game in which breaks played a major part. The two teams looked evenly matched, but three fumbles by Druid Hills deep in their own territory provided the Panthers with three touchdowns, which proved to be enough for victory. Although the Red Devils came back strong in the final stanza to score, they couldn't overcome the lead South West DeKalb had accumulated. THE AVONDALE GAME As an icy wind blasted out of the North, Druid Hills battled a highly ranked Avondale team in the final game of the season. Avon- dale stored early in the game, but the Red Devils roared back to tie the game 6-6. However Druid Hills could not contain the strong Blue Devil Team, which scored twenty points in the remainder of the game. 1, 2, 3, HEAVE The Red Devils slosh their way to victory over Decatur. l42 GYMNASTICS RANDY BROWN WILBUR SIKES Senior C0-Captain Senior Co-CL1pf.1i11 Fin!
