ar?, a r £ The Seniors Of Driver Present.... W incheste r, Indiana brassy... THE SOUND OF DRIVER is a various thing ... it is the scuff of saddleshoes and loafers on hardwood floors . . . it is the whispered tones of hurried conversations between classes . . . it is the swelling clamor of a cheering crowd. But more than these, the sound of Driver is you, the student of our high school. For without you there would be no scuf- fed floors, whispered conversations, or enthusiastic crowds - without you our high school could not exist. Thus for the students of Driver High School, we proudly present - DRIVER in sound. 4 it’s work.... it’s play... 8 one it’s CONTENTS 2 INTRODUCTION 13 ADMINISTRATION 23 CLASSES 49 ACTIVITIES 65 ATHLETICS 79 COMMUNITY The scrape of chalk on a gritty blackboard, the ring of a challenging question, and the silent process of exchang- ing ideas swell the sound of Administration. THE WINCHESTER - WHITE RIVER METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS EUGENE FIDLER MAX HELMS LEON JAMES MACY DR. W. E. HENDRICKSON WELBOURN SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS From the Superintendent's Office: MERRITT BECK Congratulations to the Class of 1961. You have achieved much during these past years in formal education. Each of you must remember that graduation is not the end, but just the be- ginning in your educational experiences. These formal education years have been spent in explor- ing your interests and capabilities and helping you become proficient in the fundamentals so that you may continue to improve as you go on to fields of higher learning, apprenticeships, or in positions chosen to make your living and contributions to society. Education is serious business. Too often it is taken too lightly in the elementary and secondary years, and is not appreciated until it is almost too late to change direction. The time has come for each of you to do your best in these years of prep- aration so that you will be able to meet the test of any endeavor that you undertake. I wish for each of you the very best in career opportunities and especially a very happy life. Sincerely, Merritt H. Beck 14 SECRETARY to the . . . Superintendent Principal BETTY HOWELL SARAH SMITH ROBERT G. JONES DRIVER HIGH PRINCIPAL FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE TO THE CLASS OF 1961.. To the conclusion that every school year is of impor- tance to the student, the parent, and the community, surely this year has been of utmost significance to all concerned. The fine spirit of cooperation and the seriousness of pur- pose as exemplified by our students toward academic school work, school projects, and school activities has been com- mendable in every respect. The memories of the school year as portrayed by this very fine book will be cherished in the years to come. I wish sincerely, for each of you, success and much happiness. Sincerely, Robert G. GOLDEN ERA Publishing a yearbook brings many trials and tribulations - deadlines to be met, p i c - tures to be taken, copy to be written, and the greatest problem, pleasing everyone. We have tried, and in doing so have achieved the first set of advertising pages complete with p i c - tures ever to be placed in a yearbook from this school. METROPOLITAN The Metropolitan, this year's new idea for a newspaper, is prepared and printed by its own staff. Beginning the year with four pages, it expanded to six in order to bring ad- ditional interesting articles. At left are Marilyn Wolfe and Pat Meek, page editors; John Taggart, editor; Betsy Green, copy editor; Mrs. Butler, advisor; and Paul Resler, art editor. Page editors not pictured are Sharon Parsons, Mary Alice Boomer and Nancy Wall. Under the direction of Mr. Buckley they participated in the Spring and Fall concerts, Christmas Vespers, State Contests and local functions. Much credit goes to them. 58 AND THE GLEE CLUB SING PRACTICING, PERFORMING PLEASANT BAND SOUNDS The Driver High School Band, under the direction of Charles Buckley, sounded off our football season with an unusual concept of marching called precision drill. Rapidly be- coming more and more popular with high schools throughout the country, this new method has achieved success for its interesting and colorful formations. One of our football shows featured our foreign exchange student from the Netherlands, Eiko Wiersema, as a campaigning senator at election time. In contrast to these half-time pageant shows, the band also employed the same precision idea in garnering 32nd place out of 84 partici- pating bands at the State Fair. However, marching is not the Band's only specialty. For example, the Band, in co-operation with the choir and vocal ensemble, staged a Fall Concert. Also, the Christmas Vesper Service and Spring Concert, again with com- bined operations , were notable successes. In addition to all the above, the Band also plays at many athletic events and takes part in musical contests such as the one held at Ball State Teacher's College in Muncie. Thus, our Band, from summer to spring keeps us conscious of the SOUNDS OF DRIVER. 61 OUR CHEERBLOCK — CheerblockBoard(1.tor. seated) Phyllis Pollic, Pat Moland Holly, Linda Lasley, and Sharon Hawley. (Standing) Sheila Simmons and Pat Meek, Mrs. Jordan, spon- sor, Caren Robinson and Jeanne Shively. 62 Majorettes left to right, bottom row: Joan Hendrickson, Carolyn Ditmer, and Evie VanLandingham. Top row: Betty Ayres, Janet Hoerst, Mary Wallace, Rebecca Hubbard, and Pam Lowe. AND MAJORETTES — SHOW SCHOOL LOYALTY 63 VARIETY ADDS INTEREST Our activities vary from helping in the principal’s office (top) to run- ning for class office. At left a coin is flipped to break the tie for Fresh- man Class secretary. Other activities include Honor Society initiation (right) and a majorette performance (below). The crash of helments, the bounce of a ball, and the cheers from the ever present crowd—all blend into the sound of Athletics. 65 The 1961 Gridiron season caught Driver's Golden Falcons in a year of rebuilding. Mentor Ed Rowedda compensated for his team's inexperience by putting the squad through hard-hitting practice sessions and long, grueling drills. These soon became known as the death march. The long hours spent in perfecting passing, kicking, tackling, and other skills were repaid with interest by Driver's stunning victory over highly-touted Royerton. Forming the nucleus of the P lcon attack were seven returning lettermen along with twenty-six juniors and five sophomores. Although our record may not have been the best, our spirit was. With an average following of 150 students, the school spirit was the best in the history of Driver. Spurred on by Clif Chute’s hapless knee injury during mid sea- son, the Falcons made his last game perhaps their best effort of the sea- son, crushing the highly-touted Union City-Wayne Indians. Although staging many driving rallies, our hoopsters found many of their tallies coming behind schedule, but never was their determination for the old gold and white lacking. 72 I SHEILA SIMMONS JEANNE SHIVELY OUR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS SENIOR LETTERMEN r 75 “B” TEAM Winning the Portland Reserve Tourney and bringing home the above gleaming trophy was the high point of the season for the Jr. Fal- cons. In addition to this the reserve squad, under the direction of mentor Robert Spencer have put on a shining exhibition of basketball fundamentals in compiling an 11 won—9 loss season record. Or as one basketball fan put it — Man, they're going to be great in a few years!” However, two members of the re- serves put the quoted gentlemen to shame by playing varsity ball before the season's close. These two prodigies are Melvin Smoot and Mark Peacock. But the B team was composed of more than these two--it is 13 fellows all giving their all for victory. As its music rings through the air and lingers in our minds, so will our influence spread throughout our community and leave its mark on the lives of our fellowmen. Now, as this school year closes, may each of us strive to make our influence one that will improve the stand- ards of our school, our community, and our nation.
