academic departments. The Mandell Theatre is suitable for plays, lectures, films, ballet and musical performances and it is no wonder that the growth of Drexel's Drama and Music De- partments has greatly increased by this addition. Thus a new facet of fine arts had come to Drexel, serving both students and the community. Adjacent to the Mandell Theatre is the EAC which houses a a variety of student activities in addition to the entire College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Drexel University Computer Center is located on the ground floor of the EAC. Equipment in this center includes high-speed batch terminals to an IBM System 370, model 168. There are key punches and interactive terminals located in the users' area, as well. Across from the Computer Center is a 325-seat cafeteria to provide dining services for the students. The first floor of the EAC is occupied by the University Book Store, actually doubling as a multi-purpose variety store. Other floors include department offices of Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology, History and Politics, Humanities and Communications, and the Music Department. The third floor is devoted exclusively to the needs of student organiza- tions. The Student Congress, Commuter Coalition, SPB, Triangle, Lexerd, APO, and many other clubs and societies have offices here. This situation serves to unify the student liaison with University administration as well as providing for better organization of student affairs. In the midst of all this expansion came some termination. As of Thursday, November 15, 1973, football was officially discontinued at Drexel. The sport was no longer to be the ma- jor campus athletic event. Locally, by 1974 hero figures were found in the Philadelphia Flyers Hockey team. With the winning of the Stanley Cup, at least Philadelphia became more optimistic. MANDELL THEATRE WORKSHOP The country's worst fuel shortage had occured during that past winter and a source of warmth was needed from somewhere. Then too, awareness of all our diminishing resources led to conserving, recycling, and re-evaluating. The EPA warned of abusing the natural environment, noting that it might already be too late. such as winter retreats, lectures, and dinners. On the political scene in 1972, Rich- ard M. Nixon, already in the White House, was re-elected. His popularity diminished quickly as his administra- tion was crumbled by corruption. Per- haps there was some consolation in Henry Kissinger's success in negotia- ting the Viet Nam cease-fire, and with the succession of Gerald Ford there was hope for better times. Back on campus, much was done in response to the needs of both the increasing commuters and the resi- dents. To cope with the expanding need for housing, Calhoun Hall was opened in the fall of 1972. The dormi- tory was named in honor of Cynthia Calhoun by her husband Ernest P. Calhoun, who was a graduate of the class of 1918 and a long-time Univer- sity trustee. Its modern style with its half-moon shape holds 356 occupants and was the first dorm on Drexel's campus to introduce co-edu- cational living. To combat the problems of the commuter, a park- ing garage was also built during 1972. This multi- level parking facility is available to all University students, faculty, and personnel at a fee. The building cost the University over S3 million, and houses the offices of the Physical Plant, Planning and Construction, as well as receiving, storage, and security. Providing one of the top engineering programs in the country, the University opened an Engineering Research Laboratory to serve the students. This lab is used primarily by mechanical engineers, and also involves the design department and some civil engineers. In response to the increasing student body, both males and females, Mandell Theatre and the Educa- tional Activities Center IEACI were completed in 1973, providing many services and housing several ARTIST'S RENDITION - PARKING GARAGE 9 CALHOUN HALL ENGINEERING RESEARCH LABORATORY , 'f,

ISI? Center was completed. This multi-million dollar facility is us- ed extensively by students, faculty, and alumni in over two dozen activities. These activities include fencing, archery, wrestling, racquetball, squash, dance, slimnastics, golf, and weight-lifting. The building also offers use of an official NCAA six-lane swimming pool, saunas, and workout rooms. The PEC is also the site for many Drexel Dragon inter- collegiate athletic activities. Aside from all this, the gym has stimulated further development of an intramural sports pro- gram, thus providing the student body with a constructive outlet for energy. Aesthetically surrounded, the center's exterior is beautifully landscaped, including three life-size bronze horses gracing a marble pedestal. By 1976, Philadelphia was anticipating a year of tourists. The New Year began by moving the Liberty Bell from its original home in Carpenter's Hall to a new pavilion on In- dependence Mall. The rain dampened the celebration and perhaps had more lasting effects through the year. Even if PHYSICAL EDUCATION CENTER UNDER CONSTRUCTION the amount of tourism was not as anticipated, the city was visited by Queen Elizabeth, a royal descendant of the land from which independence was claimed. The Bicentennial year did not go unrecognized on the Drex- el campus. The graduating class of 1976 donated the Geodesic Trispan, a structure on the corner of Thirty-Third and Market Streets. The wooden three-legged archway was a senior design project of civil engineering students modeled after the concept of Buckminster Fuller and financed by the University's Board of Trustees. Philadelphia received nationwide coverage in 1977 when native-born Sylvester Stallone created the hit film Rocky. Again, belief in the possibility for success was re-established and interest and participation in other activities developed. The trend for jogging, tennis, hiking, and skiing spread throughout the nation. Natural was to become an adjective for everything from food to clothing. At the other extreme, the disco, with its dazzle and glitter promised to make everyone a star. 3 Q.. .. :W-Q--if S .zzz-legal ff--H ,..,...T.. f f?i fiQf': rg 'K .-.sf fjfw , 'L,,,g.,,y,gjg.,,3,.,.,,, 1 K' M ' wi 1 ..., , ,Q Q5 -lf! .Lil A '.1 7 'fZggfFx..fi+.
