On campus, too, 1977 was a busy, progressive year. The department of Community Affairs and Governmental Relations expanded, moving into its own building and increasing its services and involvement with the surrounding com- munity. During this time, the Public Relations department of the University was created, meeting the needs of other areas of communica- tions. Again, the residential sector on campus need- ed more facilities. This resulted in the opening of the Residential Living Annex. Once the On- cological Hospital, this older structure was refurbished for student use. The needs of the graduate students were also met with the opening of the Graduate Apart- ments. These apartments also include a solar house, located on the top of the building, another senior design project. Furthermore, a new Graduate Placement Recruitment Center had been developed from the old Linton's Restaurant which was purchas- ed in 1977. In 1978, the nation was still involved in the SALT talks, conflicts in the Middle East, and in- flation. Yet, one giant step, of global significance, was taken between Washington and Peking to begin normal diplomatic rela- tions. Then there was the first test tube baby and the turmoil in Iran. RESIDENTIAL LIVING ANNEX li X MN... ... E s , . N 1 OFFICE OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS Focusing in on the Drexel campus, one finds the number of residents in 1978 increased ten percent. The opening of the new Residence Hall in September 1978 came just in time. This co-ed dorm holds 400 residents and is designed dif- ferently from any other dorm on campus. Although it is only three stories tall, it occupies the entire block between Powelton Avenue and Race Street, along Thrity-Third Street. Besides the luxury of wall-to-wall carpeting, moveable furniture, and a courtyard, the lounges are large, making it comfortable for students to study as well as to socialize. Also during this year, the Rincliffe Gallery was completed in memory of Roy George Rincliffe, a Drexel Trustee from 1955 to 1976. This addition to the Museum Collection consists of a collection of seventy-five Boehm porcelains which were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cannon. These fine pieces are on permanent display in specially-constructed cases located in Randell Hall. Although 1979 is not yet over it has already brought change to Drexel. On the ground floor of the Creese Student Center is the newest addi- tion to the food services on campus, The Dragon's Den . In a hope to meet changing stu- dent needs, this fast-food service was opened in

ISI? Center was completed. This multi-million dollar facility is us- ed extensively by students, faculty, and alumni in over two dozen activities. These activities include fencing, archery, wrestling, racquetball, squash, dance, slimnastics, golf, and weight-lifting. The building also offers use of an official NCAA six-lane swimming pool, saunas, and workout rooms. The PEC is also the site for many Drexel Dragon inter- collegiate athletic activities. Aside from all this, the gym has stimulated further development of an intramural sports pro- gram, thus providing the student body with a constructive outlet for energy. Aesthetically surrounded, the center's exterior is beautifully landscaped, including three life-size bronze horses gracing a marble pedestal. By 1976, Philadelphia was anticipating a year of tourists. The New Year began by moving the Liberty Bell from its original home in Carpenter's Hall to a new pavilion on In- dependence Mall. The rain dampened the celebration and perhaps had more lasting effects through the year. Even if PHYSICAL EDUCATION CENTER UNDER CONSTRUCTION the amount of tourism was not as anticipated, the city was visited by Queen Elizabeth, a royal descendant of the land from which independence was claimed. The Bicentennial year did not go unrecognized on the Drex- el campus. The graduating class of 1976 donated the Geodesic Trispan, a structure on the corner of Thirty-Third and Market Streets. The wooden three-legged archway was a senior design project of civil engineering students modeled after the concept of Buckminster Fuller and financed by the University's Board of Trustees. Philadelphia received nationwide coverage in 1977 when native-born Sylvester Stallone created the hit film Rocky. Again, belief in the possibility for success was re-established and interest and participation in other activities developed. The trend for jogging, tennis, hiking, and skiing spread throughout the nation. Natural was to become an adjective for everything from food to clothing. At the other extreme, the disco, with its dazzle and glitter promised to make everyone a star. 3 Q.. .. :W-Q--if S .zzz-legal ff--H ,..,...T.. f f?i fiQf': rg 'K .-.sf fjfw , 'L,,,g.,,y,gjg.,,3,.,.,,, 1 K' M ' wi 1 ..., , ,Q Q5 -lf! .Lil A '.1 7 'fZggfFx..fi+.
