They enable us to examine all that we can see and hear - tangible things. Yet, in the practice of medicine, there is much which is not readily perceived. Disease and illness can, and often do, hide from us and our instruments. As doctors, we must find ways to surmount this dilemma, which has confounded physicians since the origins of the practice. We must use everything we have at our disposal and indeed, we possess a great many gifts upon which to call: our minds, our hearts, our desire to help others - all can drive us forward to define these things which we cannot see. They can help us grasp the intangible. 3 PHILADELPHIA The Tangible City hiladelphia. City of brotherly love and athletic disaster, it was our home during our four years at Hahnemann. When we had time to take advantage of it, this city had much to offer. Hahnemann's Center City location put us right in the middle of the action, with several restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance. Philadelphia's skyline is dominated by William Penn, the city's founder, who stands high atop City Hall where nothing goes unseen. However, Billy is no longer top dog, for Philadelphia has its own skyscraper currently under construction, the first building to stand taller than William Penn's hat. South Philadelphia, the hub of Italian culture, is the place to go for an Italian feast, a Pat's Cheesesteak, or perhaps just a stroll through the open-air market. Deep in South Philly, one finds the Sports Complex home of Philadelphia's professional sports teams. After the game, one could go north to Head House Square, where a Bass Ale at the Dicken's Inn might be in order. Once the whistle is wet, the stage is set to promenade down South Street, Philadelphia's own Greenwich Village, where everything, and anything, goes. , fr Y! In the center of the square is one of the city's most impressive fountains tit is rumored that many a Hahnemann student set out to break the Olympic freestyle record after a long Thursday evening at Doc Watson'sl. Flanking the fountain are the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Franklin Institute, where one may go to expand one's fund of general knowledge. 4-if HAHNEMANN UNIVERSITY The Academic En virons road and Vine was our address for four years, while we slaved away in pursuit of medical knowledge. Members of the Class of 1987 will not soon forget the early morning awakenings to attend lectures in Geary Auditorium during our pre-clinical years. lf the three-day-old cup of coffee from Bonanza was not enough to wake us for the ensuing lectures, the loud horns of the Vine Street traffic as it intended to end our lives certainly did the job. On cold, windy winter days, classmates could be seen helplessly blown out of control in the 15th Street Wind Tunnel. Ronald McDonald, our next-door neighbor, was always willing to serve us fine cuisine with excellent service during late nights on call. Aids? '.'.'4 1 . ' '-', 'g,.. Qiiilfii 'Hs 0'2 The Class of 1987, the finest class to graduate since the Class of 1986, was made up of people from all walks of life and all civilized areas of the known free world, as well as California. We assembled in August of 1983, fresh from college, not knowing what lurked beyond the new, electric, automatic rotating door on 15th Street. For those who survived the first Gross Anatomy exam, there was always the second Physiology exam to help us along with applications to law school. Sophomore year brought us Pathology, Pharmacology, and new stethoscopes to wear around our necks. During third year, our Clinical skills increased exponentially, with some of us even able to hear heart sounds with that precious gift from Littman. Second year offered us freedom of choice and an ability to pursue our own areas of interest. It all went so fast, though. lt seems like only yesterday Doctors DePace and Blumenstein were doing their Abbott and Costello routine. They dig out the cancer, close an incision and say a prayer to the poverty of the skin. They are not Gods though they would like to beg they are only human trying to iix up a human. Many humans die. They die like the tender, palpitating berries in November. But all along the doctors remember: First do no harm. They would kiss if it would heal. lt would not heal. lf the doctors cure then the sun sees it. 9 lf the doctors kill then the earth hides it. CHIDYLLO, D.D.S., M D C-1ueen's College, City University Of New York State University Of New York At Buffalo School Of Dentistry l would like to dedicate this page to my family who without the joint efforts of all of them this dream would have never become a reality To my grandparents Who as immigrants had the courage to leave their families behind for the hope of having a better life in this country To my parents Who had the love for each other and their children to guide and nurture me through life and yet allowed me to have the flexibility to develop my own character To my aunts and uncles, who pitched in whenever necessary to provide me with the support l needed to strive ahead towards my goal. To my brotherg Who taught me the meaning of success, perseverance and tenacity, he always sup- ported my journey no matter how bleak it might have looked at times. To my sister, Who helped me through the difficult times with an understanding heart, a sympathetic ear and always an open house to stay in. This degree is being shared by all of us: l may have contributed the many hard hours of studying and the years of my life, however many others contributed their prayers, love, home cooked meals and finances to make it all possible. l pray for God's blessing and guidance throughout my life in my career of medicine. Well, that's just it. l've been taught that the treatment for them is to do nothing. The more you do, the worse they get. What? Who taught you that? The Fat Man. The words plowed two furrows on the tChief of Medicine'sJ brow, and he said, surely you don't believe the Fat Man, do you? Well, at first I did think it was crazy, but then I tried it out for myself, and surprisingly, it worked. When I tried your way - Jo's way - they devel- oped incredible complications. l'm not sure yet, but I think the Fat Man had a point. He's nobody's fool, Sir. l don't understand. The Fat Man taught you that to deliver no medical care is the most important thing you can do? The Fat Man said that that was the delivery of medical care. What? To do nothing? That's doing something. We do as much nothing as we can ,... - The House of God, i978 T.E. McGeachy, M.D. 1905-1973 -.., I i 5. in MICHAEL E. During our first three years, we began to experience the major specialties. Fourth year brought with it the opportunity to sample the various subspecialties, as we were asked to decide upon a residency program. All the studying, the histories and physicals, the early morning rounds and the interviews came together in a crescendo at the end of a long, tedious and uncertain process - the Match. After pondering Rank Order Lists over and over, trying to envision ourselves in the cities and towns of our prospective residencey programs, we mailed the envelopes to lllinois. And we waited. On March 18, 1987 at high noon, our fates tfor the next several years, at leastl were disclosed to us. There were thrills, surprises and even some disappointments - not unlike those of life, for Match day as well as residency training is just a part of the larger scheme. We have chosen careers that are more than just jobs - they encompass us in every aspect. lt is a challenge we look forward to with great anticipation. - 273 l ,,,...v 511-4. -an .H !
