Goodbye, McDonaId'sg Hello, Le Bec Fin. 284 DIRECTORY. Don't be a stranger. 290 ADVERTISING. How do you think we paid for all this? VIEWS OF THE U Hahnemann the Healer, is the public part of the University, playing a major role in local health care. There are also Hahnemann the Researcher and Hahnemann the Educator. In the classroom, the laboratories, the library, as on 'the floors,' Hahnemann has been proud to be the proving ground for quality. Like Lee lacocca, we challenge anybody to take our graduates for a test drive. One will be pleased with the tempera- ment, good humor, and above all, the competence of the product. To some, Hahne- mann is merely a group of buildings on the corner of Broad and Vine Streets, but we kn0W better. 2' eff jf The Quaker City Billy Penn blew it. He could have dropped anchor anywhere. But no, he picked Philly. Think of it, we could have been in California, Jane Fonda-sizing, getting tanned and being blond. Instead, we're gazing at a giant rusty clothespin, exterminating roaches, getting sinusitis and being cold. There's no justice. But Penn didn't really do so badly. Philadelphia became a center for the exchange and evaluation of ideas on religion, science, and the arts. The city is rich with history: Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and Elfreth's Alley, the oldest residental street in the country. The arts are well represented by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Academy of Music, among many cultural institutions. Philly is also the city of neighborhoods, with most major ethnic groups sharing their culture and cuisine. lt was in this fertile environment that the Hahnemann institutions began. Now in it's third century, Philadelphia continues to be a moving force for progress. The courage, foresight, and evenhandedness with which Billy Penn founded the city will be carried on by its citizens. Philadelphia has all the problems of any of the great northeastern cities. However, the future is as bright now as in Penn's day. After all, we've got the world's largest clothespin. 4 l ,, .J bv L f . The critics unanimously agreed that QRS Productions even ex- ceeded their 1981 entry of The Hahne- mann Blues. K Williams -1 l Fir ' y I 1984 k EDITORS-IN-CHIEF Suson Brodermon Mory Jennings 1984 has been a year both anticipated and dreaded by political analysts, literary aficionados, and the two hundred and three graduates in this book. On a conscious level we expected monumental changes during this fateful graduation year, yet on another, subliminal level, we feared we would never make it this far. Our class was special at Hahnemann. As the last students of the Core Curriculum, we were participants in a now passe experiment in liberalism. The 1960's ideals of relevance, individuality, and humanity have fallen victim to the 1980's priorities of economic security, expediency and pragmatism. Medical education has been politicized, competition in and among medical schools is once more in fashion. George Orwell's novel, 1984, is of the genre of dystopian futurism. Written in 1947-1948 as Orwell lay dying of tuberculosis, it was a product of its time: the world was just recovering from Nazism and Stalinism, the Cold War was beginning, Gandhi was assassinated, the C.l.A. was founded, and the military-industrial complex got its start. 1984 portrayed life in a fictional country without political or intellectual freedom, legal justice, or individual privacy. Government used high-technology and the power of language to control its citizens. For many of us, the experience of medical school has often had an analogous, eery Orwellian quality, an aspect which makes 1984 an especially appropriate theme for our yearbook. Despite Orwell's dark world vision, we have made it to the prophesized year with our freedom intact. In fact, we are sugar-free, caffeine'free, salt-free, fat-free, carefree, taste-free, free-willed, and buy-one-get-one-free'd. There's even such a thing as a free lunch, known as Meals-on-Wheels. One thing that is not free, however, is a medical education. We share the collective experience of soaring tuition and dwindling financial resources, in order to be trained for a profession increasingly regulated by another Big Brother. Undoubtedly, medical practice in the late 1980's and beyond will continue to be shaped by GMENAC, DRGls, and the HEAL loans that have haunted our education. But the fact remains that with great anticipation, and despite our fears, the Class of 1984 is about to be launched into free society. To our classmates, we the Editors of 1984 MEDIC, dedicate our tongue'in-cheek Orwellian theme. As in the spring of 1981, the original core of Bob Our Fearless Leader Levin, Steve Shore, Rich Weiss, Ellen Kemper, Howard Magbat Solomon et al. pitched, stroked, played defense and fought all spring into the finals. Of note, the tenacious efforts of Nancy Richards as catcher during a major collision with Bill Bull Rate, inspired the entire team in the playoffs. The pitching of Fernando Levinson and Regina Shaw stymied their opponents. The remainder of this squad: Andy Sweet-swinging Hahn, Bill Killer Gerhardt, Brian We'll-never-win Her- man, Viv Ace', Chou, Doug Aw-shucks Weitzman, Mike Clutch Levy, and of course, dependable Chris Richards, won the day handily. What will the future bring to you as you practice medicine in the coming decade? My somewhat cloudy crystal ball tells me that there will be major changes in your role as a physician as compared with the role of the generation of physicians who precede you. The changes will come in answer to the needs of a more educated and sophisticated patient population: some will consider doctors nothing more than technicians in white coatsg others will demand 'total patient care,' which will include the doctor addressing himself to the patient's problems other than his purely physical ones. Many patients will demand an end to the superiorf inferior basis of the present relationship between many doctors and patients. They will want to be treated as consumers coming to the doctor for his or her services. The average age of your patients will change as well, as many of you will be treating growing numbers of the aged. The graying of America is in full swing. The geriatric patient has special needs that cannot be ignored. All of this, I predict, will mean that some of you will be working for a salary for an organization, rather than as individual entrepreneurs. The role of the doctor as teacher also can be expected to grow, as more people become aware of the importance of good health practices. And who should know more about the subject than the doctor? After all, the original meaning of the word 'doctor' was 'teacherf Good luck in your efforts to meet the challenges of your new role. BERTRAM S. BROWN, M.D. President, -tg,-9 JOHN R. BEUAN, M.D. Deon, School Of Medicine As one of the newest members of the Hahnemann family, l feel especially privileged to convey my best wishes and con- gratulations to the Class of 1984. This class, individually and collectively, will carry forward Hahnemann's long-standing tra- dition of clinical excellence and concern for patients. The past four or five years have been hard ones for you - sometimes frustrating, but always rewarding. You will undoubt- edly continue to face frustrations and challenges for the dura- tion of your professional career, which is really just now begin- ning. You will face many self-interested constituencies who will assail you and the profession of medicine for their own pur- poses. Heed LaRouchefoucauld: Self-interest speaks all sorts of tongues, and plays all sorts of roles, even that of disinterest- edness. Be undaunted. You are well-educated and intelligent professionals, standing on centuries of truth and tradition, to seek and set yet another milestone in the profession of medicine. Godspeed. HUGH D. BENNETT, M.D. Associote Deon, School Of Medicine Please accept my sincere congratulations on your graduation. and my thanks for the privilege of working with you over the years, We have all seen profound changes in our profession, our school. and the world, during the four years that you have been in medical school. The year, 1984, is upon us and many of Orwell's predictions now seem absurd, yet some of the changes upon us, especially in medicine, seem to carry with them some ghost of his predictions. Among the changes that seem most profound are the recent advent of almost entirely third party payment, plus the inroads of those payers into the practice of medicine, ln addition, the current trend to regard patients as diseases, rather than as suffering human beings, forces individuals into a single primary diagnosis, thus ignoring the intricate interplay of disease within a given individual We have further seen rather selfish, monopolistic medical specialties reduce training programs in order to reduce their own competition This has been carried out with little regard to the actual health needs of the population served. All of these trends tend to set up obstacles to the provision of the humanistic care that the maiority of phvsi cians feel is desirable and acceptable. There may be very little that we can do to change the trends However, within the system l believe we must place ourselves squarely on the side of the patient and the patients benefit We must fight for their rights, not ours, We must demand their good care, rift! our ease of delivery of care We must provide care with a frieiidlih humanistic approach which is ever more necessary as they proceed through the maze of regulations l believe the training at Hahnemann has provided you with the ability to become a trite friend of man l know we will all be proud ol you '-l FACULTY DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY chel S. The Match forms were filed with the utmost of care, And mailed to Evanston, Please, God, not there! That night while tossing and turning in beds, Visions of envelopes danced in their heads, Boston, New York, Chicago, L.A .... The location didn't matter, nor did the pay. Awake and anxious, to Geary they flew, March 14th, 'twas noong their destinies were due. Suddenly in the rear there arose such a clatter They sprang from their seats to see what's the matter. And what to their wondering eyes did appear, A little old man with envelopes of cheer. Eyebrows of cotton, wisps of gray hair, Rumpled plaid jacket...Hugh Bennett was there. Straight to the podium, he announced with a smile, You've all done quite well. You've beat Harvard a mile!' He wasted no time but went straight to his work, He handed out envelopes as he said with a smirk: Fine clinicians you'Il be, in the best Hahnemann tradition It's a shame we can't bill you another year's tuition! 'Midst the champagne and food, Hugh Bennett did arise, A toast to the seniors! Congratulations, guys! We are pleased that you came here, we wish you could stay, Don't forget the alumni...they'll contact you in May. His speech now finished, he walked slowly out of sight. Best of luck to all, and to all a good night! , Ph in Waiting for Match Day does strange things to people As The Stomach Turns: MATCH DAY f ' ,pf r v gr- ef ,F Q , A, 's I N v i fi 4 W T I . x J! 574' -nd 'if-r ff .15 ,J-. 1 -- -Lo ze 1.1 -J' ,. 2 'A F 1 QS if g-,7 Three more years at Hahnemann!?!!
