Ratner Color Photography Brian H. Fillipo loseph I. Piotrowski Editorial During the last four years, we have all played witness to many changes at Hahnemann. We have seen the Big H rise to a new university status. We have seen the changing of our President, Dean, and Chief of Medicine. We have also seen the end of the core curriculum at Hahnemann. Like the Big H , we have all changed a great deal in our maturation from college students to physicians. This year's Medic is a parody on a brochure for our fictional drug, Hahnemeighty-3. This drug like us as students, has undergone an intense four year development. For my fellow classmates, I hope the pictures will bring back memories of our last four years together. For others of you who read this book, l hope you find humor and enjoyment in our parody while at the same time get a flavor of our life at Hahnemann the last four years. It is obvious not every person will enjoy our entire book and we hope we have not offended anyone. If we have, we apologize now. Finally l would like to thank all of the people whose work has made this edition of the Medic a reality. A special thanks goes to jennifer Kraus, the artist who designed the cover, which is based on Michelangelo's painting, The Creation of Adam. Thanks also to Dean Bennetts office for all of their help. In addition, the people at Merin Studios deserve a very special thanks for their technical assistance. As editor, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Medic staff for their tireless work. It is through their endless ideas and countless hours of work that this book is a reality. Lastly, I would like to thank the Class of 1983 for their help and cooperation in putting this book together. I hope it provides many warm memories in the years to come. Brian H. Fillipo l'5 I Nmxw. Ratner and Maurice Mo Rozwat From all across the country, and from the far corners of the world, Barry Horowitz assembled a multitude of irrascible, young, intellectuals dedicated to the proposition that hard work, compassion and extravagant debauchery would encompass the next 4 years. Full of vim and vigor, they would embark upon an odyssey that would mold and shape their characters and their lives. A brieforientation period attempted to prepare them for their dynamic entanglement with medical education. But the fun and games of this spicy respite could not even begin to flavor the goulash that awaited them. Core l began. jesus wept. Anatomy, biochemistry, histology and behavioral science provided the first dramatic challenge for the medical neophytes. Tired and tortured, they tediously tore through traumatized tendons. They toiled through twighlight hours in an attempt to master the anatomy they hadn't learned in high school health education class or midnight rendezvous' in '67 Chevys. Under the skillful tutelage of Dr. Theodore G. Sarphie they learned. Drs. Angstadt, Devlin, and Baggott putthe mean into amino acids. Amentic escapades prepondered through the histolgic sessions. Behavioral science - who cared? However, a valid attempt was made to enlighten the fledglings about the psychopathology that awaited them in other Hahnemann aca- demic and clinical departments. 80 Christmas vacation was a much needed interlude. The mummers ushered in the new decade. Charlie's Angels en- joyed another successfull season. Angels wept as Angelakos took to the stage. Et was asshumed that eet occured that five hydroxy treeptyamyeen occured under the asshumpshun that it occured. It was assumed they learned physiology. At least Dr. Snipes taught them that little boys would rather play with trucks and little girls prefer to play dress-up. fThat is all we have to say about that! Soaring to new investigative heights, Dr. Kalia enthralled the class. With mindless wonderment they learned that pidgeons without brains are subject to the forces of gravity. Time flew by in microbiology class like pidgeons in neuro- physiology. God may save the Queen, but unfortunately not all British subjects are so lucky. Poor unfortunate Dr. Lumb was bur- dened with an intolerable secretary. He thrust her upon the class, an act for which he will never be forgiven. Never before had so many suffered so much, from so few, for so little. Time passed. Seasons changed. The class began to settle in. Friendships were made, and neuroses exacerbated. Yet throughout all the change that occurred, one thing remained constant- Andre. He was a bear of a man, who usually prefered hibernation to classes. Driven by some unknown circadianhormonal surge, he would occassionally surface to assault the note service, and pro- pagandize for William Shakespeare. No matter what can be said about him, he will never be forgotten. Andre Weinberger was not the only celebrity to liven up the dreary Geary stage. The Core l class show featured cameo appearances by Al Pacino, Marlon Brando and Dennis Hop- per. However, the most outstanding points of the show were provided by Liz Vennos. The show was a success. Finals soon approached. Tension mounted. Andre watched TV. Late night moans of frustration could be heard eminating from the MDL labs. Andre watched TV. Suddenly, with a fiery horse and a cloud of dust, and a hearty Marcy Silverberg, the Trashcanallaros burst upon the scene. They cut through the tension like a ginsu through goulash. Playing on underlying incompetence, with sharp, brilliant wit and satire, they im- mortalized the cylindrical receptacle, while paying homage to Sam Coche. The class would never be the same. Summer passed and so did most of us. Andre watched TV. Core I extension was exemplified by drugs and pathology. Self abuse reached an all time low. Never again would the class torture itselfas it did in Core l. Never again would they be whipped into submission. Andre watched TV. Equipped with their basic science armamentarium, and freshly charged opthalmoscopes, the sophomores hit the floors. From the hallowed halls of Hahnemann to the purple mountain majesties of Sayre, from the shores of Monmouth to the steel heaps ofWilkes Barre, a common cry could be heard: Does your grandmother have diabetes? Healing hands tor- tured sick people, yet they persevered. They gained confi- dence. They learned that radiology is an honorable profession. Other hospitals graciously accepted them. Their good points would never be forgotten lat least not by some of the nursesl. Andre watched TV. Ill ex'-' For two years, the class had been told, lt would all come together in Corelli. It did. The Nielson ratings went up as the whole class watched TV. Ben babbled, Rose rambled, Carver cut-up, and Clearfield clarified. Speaking of appendicitis, Dr. Perlman has a sailboat. As class attendance was poor, note service gained a new importance and the information con- tained in it was savored. The class, full of pedophiles, delight- ed in the weekly adventures of Sally Sue Sunday and Lisa Laurie Lively. Hahnemann Medical College became the world's most expensive correspondence course. Needless to say, a good time was had by all. The highlight of Core Ill was undoubtedly the class show. Although some might say it was a bomb , the show portrayed the true wit and deviance ofthe class. A hamster became a sex symbol. An amoeba, cleverly disguised as Ken Uston, showed its hairy legs. laques LeFrock expounded on the merits of having feet and the Fahcocktahcoccus. A greatly reduced Todd Tom protrayed that master technician of diction and tailoring, Dr. Teruo Matsmuoto - Samurai Surgeon. Ears were soothed by the mellow tones of Hymie Waumbaum and his all Chiropractic Orchestra. However, the most outstanding points of the show were provided by Bobbi Leeming. And she didn't sing half-bad either! The show was a success. Core lll ended, and once again, the class was split up. 82 In lune of 1982, Hahnemann became a university. Equipped with an armamentarium accumulated over three years, and freshly recharged opthalmoscopes, the seniors once again hitthe floors. With bravado, they tackled their new responsibi- lities, and grappled with disease. Despite their academic and clinical responsibilities, the upperclassmen were consumed by the Quixotic quest of find- ing the ideal residency program. After many miles of travel, and frustrating hours of deliberation, match rank order forms were completed. The wait began. The two months seemed an eternity. At long last it was March 16th. Some were disappointed, many pleased, all in- toxicated, their fate was sealed. tDid Andre watch TV?l The Trashcanalleros performed for the last time. The rest was a quiet note in the history of the Hahnemann Medical College Graduating Class of 1983. Four years and 60,000 dollars ago, our class set forth upon Hahnemann, dedicated to the proposition that we would be- come M.D.'s, and we did. And throughout the land the cry could be heard, Does your grandmother have diabetes? , . . As Andre watched TV. whip, ,U . 5,J,-5 J 1 ' Lv 1 if ,J I If 6 J l Hg' XV. fi .f X ru' -R, In x DUANE E. MIGUAL A. MAYNEZ, M.D Princeton University I i f iii 4 O 1' sim, W 1 Research and Development Like the academicians behind the development of past Hahnemather-apeutic agents, the scholars responsible for the development of Hahnemeighty-3 represent some of the most highly trained minds drawn from the four corners of the world, some as far away as Camden, New lersey. We are deeply indebted to these researchers for bringing us a drug which is efficacious in the treatment of such a wide variety of diseases. ddress from the President 4-'E' In at least every decade since the 194O's, commencement speakers and presidential yearbook messages have exponded on the theory that more has been accomplished in medicine in the life-time of years of practice of the authors than ever before in the history of civilization. During your lifetime, which is just about the number of years I have been a physician, there have been dramatic changes which have made quality health care more readily available to increasing numbers of people regardless of ability to pay. But I do not want to dwell on the past. I would like to make several predictions which you may enjoy evaluating some years down the road as you reflect on your graduation from the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in the year 1983. First: Our entire social structure will change, including medical care. You can play an active role in those changes with considerable satisfaction and some frustration or a passive role with little reward and great frustration. Second: No matter where you practice, you will find the community taking a great interest in the promotion of the health and welfare of its residents. Third: Medical care will be available to ALL at an affordable price. It will be delivered in such a manner that there will be more than adequate real and psychic income for the providers. Fourth: The trend toward greater participation by all levels of government - local, state, and federal- will continue as provisions are made for more comprehensive medical care for our citizenry. Fifth: Physicians will develop a better understanding of the social and economic Laws which influenece health and disease and will participate in their development as they assume a more active role in community life. Outlandish predctions? Actually, they are not new or original. They were made at my graduation from medical school in 1956. They still hold true for your generation. Thus, with this brief message, I pass the torch of health care delivery to you - The Class of 1983 - and I admonish you to carry it firmly but gently, holding it as high as you can. Good luck and Godspeed. Bertram S. Brown, M.D. President 264 Message to the Class of 1983 For the Class of 1983 an important part of career-oriented education and training now comes to a close. Although additional steps, namely internship, residency and in a number of instances fellowship remain to be taken before the formal program has been completed, no part of that program will be distinguished by the same unique commitment to pure learning as the four years in medical college. Unquestionably, this is why graduation is celebrated with such pride, special joy and specific privilege. Regrettably, what you have struggled so hard to master while in medical college will prove to have a remarkably short half life and will be relegated by the intensity and magnitude of the explosion of new knowledge in the health sciences to obsolescence in an incredibly short period of time. What deter- mines whether this ongoing challenge to update knowledge will or will not be met depends upon individual initiative and energy of will. On one point everyone readily agrees: namely, that life as a physician can flourish only if there is total commitment to continued learning. Therein resides the opportu- nity for a full life of growth and contentment, as well as service. I join with a full cadre of well wishers in extending congratulations for what you have already accomplished and for the remarkable opponunity still ahead. Sincerely, William Likoff, M.D. Chancellor A Message from the Dean . . . and the Associate Dean As you leave your student days to enter your chosen professional career, let me first wish you the best of success on accomplishing the things you aspire. There is a great deal of speculation in medicine, as in other fields, on what are the measures of success or what are the criteria by which one can judge, many years from now, the level of your accomplishments, ls it academic honors, financial goals or clinical reputation or perhaps a bit of all those and many more? No one has found the perfect measure and probably no one will, For there is no measure to be applied to all. In human life in general, it is only the fulfillment of one's own hopes, aspirations and dreams that make the journey worthwhile and indeed exciting. Medicine as a profession provides an out- standing opportunity for personal fulfillment. This is the time to establish your own goals, your own measures of success and set your course to achieve them. Look for whatever will make your life truly rich and rewarding. Look for the inner tranquility that comes from knowing your own worth as a human being. Look for pride and humility, for overcoming adversity, for sailing through the rough and calm seas, for service and just reward. The old Greek philosopher Solon said, envy no one before the end. No one knows the score until the tournament is played to the end. Above all look for the qualities that will mark you as an outstanding human being to those who come in tontatt with you. Through your work in Medicine you can give much to current and future generations ofhumanity. In the words ofthe I lippor ratir oath, it you do so you will cherish honor and prosperity throughout your lite. This year as an interim Dean, I have worked to develop nexx goals tor the institution in meeting the challenges for the end of the txxentieth rentrux, l have no doubt that the institution will rontinue to dex elop and thrne in the future.
