I wrote the following words for the MEDIC of 1938. At that time they were the statement of a young man taking his first few steps toward a career in Medicine. Now, forty years later, I still find them appropriate, and hope that they will convey to you some of my feelings about the nature of Medicine and the great-challenge you now face as you begin your careers. Congratulations, and Godspeed! President William B. Likoff Night falls . . . To deepen the sorrows of the day. Still hours . . . Darken the weary souls of men. Pity Man . . . Who sleeps deaf to tortured cry. Scorn Man . . . Who ignores his Fellow's grief. Unchallenged . . . Death must never have reward, Nor Pain . . . Its anguishing relentless way. Night falls . . . A Glance Back The MEDIC is fifty years old this year, and I am proud to have been part of its tradition. The MEDIC has now been published continuously for half a century. I don't think I had ever realized how much this book holds until I read the MEDIC of 1928. A real sense of comradery flows through their book and reading it, one can feel the bonds that held the sixty three of them together. Over the years, the MEDIC has been the historian and recordkeeper for those who came and went at Hahnemann. To some of you, this may seem like just another yearbook, but to me, it is the beginning of another half century of tradition. Throughout this book, we will try to recreate some of the flavor of that first MEDIC fifty years ago, as we remember this year with you. We wish to express our deep gratitude and appreciation to Merin Studios for their help in producing this book. We wish to thank Sydney I. Harris and Argus Communications for allowing us copyright privledges for Mr. Harris's book winners 8' losers. My debt to you, Mr. Harris is very personal. Thank you. And we wish to thank Carl C. Fischer, M.D. '28 and editor of the 1928 MEDIC for starting such a fine tradition. jim Cantoni, editor
