Dear Graduate: Congratulations! You have worked hard and long to reach pq-A this sta e of our rofessional I ,wx training.g y p ln so doing, you have equipped yourselves with as fine a medical gi education as is available. i You have been in contact with Hahnemann's scientists and teachers, not only in the class- room and lecture hall, but also in modern laboratory settings and amid tertiary care clinical facilities where you were exposed to a wide range of diagnostic and theraputic situations. Our faculty has passed on to you the benefits of their own training, and years of experience and mastery of the art of healing. They have given you glimpses of judgement under pressure and the never-ending search for scientific truth and total committment to that which we deem imperative X beyong measure-the preservation of human life. Hahnemann's impact on you does not end with graduation. ln fact, it has only begun. Your ex- perience here, the people you have met and your forging at the hands of our faculty will guide you and strengthen you as you progress in your profession. Por some, this progress will be in the direction of healing or surgery. Others will be drawn to scien- tific research. These are equally valid solutions to the same transcendental problem-that of human suffering. One focuses on the present, while the other looks to the future. I am awed by the thought of the number of lives you will lengthen during your careers, the pain you will attenuate, the strength and comfort you will impart to the ill and their loved ones. Among you may be several Nobel Laureates of tomorrow, scientists who will make possible quan- tum leaps in the improvement of the human condition. l am inspired by the likelihood that in the years ahead Hahnemann's class of 1975 will be chronicled as having produced more than its share of great teacher-healers. Remember Hahnemann. Hahnemann will not forget you. Wharton Shober President and Chief Executive Officer 3

Introduction The past four years have been the most important period of our lives, we have, through long hours of study and clinical contact, assimilated an enormous volume of information 5 we have experienced the joys and sorrows attendant upon the practice of Medicine and have had to come to terms with many of our own fears and misconceptions 7 we have made some lifelong friends, we have learned much about ourselves and others and have had to alter our expectations of others accordingly 5 we have grown from students of Medicine to Doctors, a giant step marking the beginning of an evolutionary process which is to continue for the rest of our lives. With few exceptions, I am sure these years have had a profound impact not only on the prospects for the future but also on the very fibers of our personal philosophy and structure. And so it should be, for in no other profession is the individuals' philosophy so impor- tant to success and happiness as in Medicine. For many of us, these years in medical school have been a trying experience leaving unpleasant, even bitter, as well as pleasant memories. This, perhaps, is also partly to our benefit, for in no other profes- sion is an inner personal strength so important to success. Misfortune and sadness is, I think, an es- sential ingredient in life, without these we would not be so keenly aware of our own limitations, nor would we be so sensitive to or understanding of the misfortunes of others. But time is kind and tends to dull the unpleasant memories and, years from now, our recollection will be mostly of the many people we met, the few close fri-2:1-Jships we made, and perhaps of a few isolated patients who were especially difficult or touching. In the following 240-odd pages I have attempted to portray the many people at Hahnemann who we were likely to have had contact with during our years as medical students. Unavoidably, some individ- uals may not be represented as well as others. The choice of which faculty or staff members to include depended primarily on the availability of photographs and space in :he yearbook. The vast majority of photographs appearing here were taken by Paul Peindl and myself and, since we both spent most of our senior year at Hahnemann, this had considerable influence on the content of Medic '75. A small number of seniors spent most of the last year away from Hahnemann and were unavailable for candid photos 5 regrettably, their senior pages reflect this. For the same reasons, affiliate hospitals and staff are not that well represented. ' I would like to express my gratitude to the many people who have been instrumental in the planning, composition, and publication of Medic '75, A special thank you is in order for my wife, Irene, for the many hours she spent doing the secretarial work for Medic '75, for Paul and Kathy Peindl for their sketches and cartoons, for Don Wernsing for his efforts and talent as business manager, for William I. O'Brien who, as representative for American Yearbook Company, was unfailingly available when his advice was needed, and to Linda Kamin and Roseanne Vitetta for the many favors they have done over the past year. Some pictures are worth a thousand words . . . hopefully, there are many such within. Q. Mai Editor-in- Chief 2
