Kiesel - ASSQCIATE EDITOR Paul Peindl BUSINESS MANAGER Donald H. Wernsing ' s 4 ' ,I Introduction The past four years have been the most important period of our lives, we have, through long hours of study and clinical contact, assimilated an enormous volume of information 5 we have experienced the joys and sorrows attendant upon the practice of Medicine and have had to come to terms with many of our own fears and misconceptions 7 we have made some lifelong friends, we have learned much about ourselves and others and have had to alter our expectations of others accordingly 5 we have grown from students of Medicine to Doctors, a giant step marking the beginning of an evolutionary process which is to continue for the rest of our lives. With few exceptions, I am sure these years have had a profound impact not only on the prospects for the future but also on the very fibers of our personal philosophy and structure. And so it should be, for in no other profession is the individuals' philosophy so impor- tant to success and happiness as in Medicine. For many of us, these years in medical school have been a trying experience leaving unpleasant, even bitter, as well as pleasant memories. This, perhaps, is also partly to our benefit, for in no other profes- sion is an inner personal strength so important to success. Misfortune and sadness is, I think, an es- sential ingredient in life, without these we would not be so keenly aware of our own limitations, nor would we be so sensitive to or understanding of the misfortunes of others. But time is kind and tends to dull the unpleasant memories and, years from now, our recollection will be mostly of the many people we met, the few close fri-2:1-Jships we made, and perhaps of a few isolated patients who were especially difficult or touching. In the following 240-odd pages I have attempted to portray the many people at Hahnemann who we were likely to have had contact with during our years as medical students. Unavoidably, some individ- uals may not be represented as well as others. The choice of which faculty or staff members to include depended primarily on the availability of photographs and space in :he yearbook. The vast majority of photographs appearing here were taken by Paul Peindl and myself and, since we both spent most of our senior year at Hahnemann, this had considerable influence on the content of Medic '75. A small number of seniors spent most of the last year away from Hahnemann and were unavailable for candid photos 5 regrettably, their senior pages reflect this. For the same reasons, affiliate hospitals and staff are not that well represented. ' I would like to express my gratitude to the many people who have been instrumental in the planning, composition, and publication of Medic '75, A special thank you is in order for my wife, Irene, for the many hours she spent doing the secretarial work for Medic '75, for Paul and Kathy Peindl for their sketches and cartoons, for Don Wernsing for his efforts and talent as business manager, for William I. O'Brien who, as representative for American Yearbook Company, was unfailingly available when his advice was needed, and to Linda Kamin and Roseanne Vitetta for the many favors they have done over the past year. Some pictures are worth a thousand words . . . hopefully, there are many such within. Q. Mai Editor-in- Chief 2 Dear Graduate: Congratulations! You have worked hard and long to reach pq-A this sta e of our rofessional I ,wx training.g y p ln so doing, you have equipped yourselves with as fine a medical gi education as is available. i You have been in contact with Hahnemann's scientists and teachers, not only in the class- room and lecture hall, but also in modern laboratory settings and amid tertiary care clinical facilities where you were exposed to a wide range of diagnostic and theraputic situations. Our faculty has passed on to you the benefits of their own training, and years of experience and mastery of the art of healing. They have given you glimpses of judgement under pressure and the never-ending search for scientific truth and total committment to that which we deem imperative X beyong measure-the preservation of human life. Hahnemann's impact on you does not end with graduation. ln fact, it has only begun. Your ex- perience here, the people you have met and your forging at the hands of our faculty will guide you and strengthen you as you progress in your profession. Por some, this progress will be in the direction of healing or surgery. Others will be drawn to scien- tific research. These are equally valid solutions to the same transcendental problem-that of human suffering. One focuses on the present, while the other looks to the future. I am awed by the thought of the number of lives you will lengthen during your careers, the pain you will attenuate, the strength and comfort you will impart to the ill and their loved ones. Among you may be several Nobel Laureates of tomorrow, scientists who will make possible quan- tum leaps in the improvement of the human condition. l am inspired by the likelihood that in the years ahead Hahnemann's class of 1975 will be chronicled as having produced more than its share of great teacher-healers. Remember Hahnemann. Hahnemann will not forget you. Dear Doctor: I recall that when I graduated from medical school many years ago a generous drug com- pany gave all of the seniors a copy of Osler's Essays entitled, AEQUANIMITAS . There was considerable disappointment among the graduates as most would have better appre- ciated a textbook of surgery or some other more useful gift. I kept my copy and have on many occasions re-read with pleasure these famous essays. Osler, generally regarded as the father of modern medical practice in this country, said everything that should have been said in his era and said it better than anyone else. He predicted a good many things which came to pass, but what is more remarkable is what he did not predict. Osler never had the remotest suspicion that all the great killers of his day, pneumonia, tuberculosis and syphilis would be brought under control. This plus other discoveries have so changed the character of medical practice that Osler and other great prophets could not even come close to a rea- , 5.5.4 , .I ,W - sonable prediction. Who would have antici- 'N-v ' pated that we would encourage the produc- s..f X tion of physicians assistants, that classical -..,, ' -u MI --. -- inn medical education would now become a core curriculum with tracks. Many now predict even greater change in last quarter of this century. One thing never changes and Osler had it right in his title. Equanimity, or evenness of mind or temper will never grow old fashioned. Never in the history of medicine has the physician a greater need to maintain his cool , Beset on all sides by ever increasing criticism and faced with greater strain in his practice at the same time with less rewards to his ego if not his pocketbook, it is not surprising that the modern physician breaks down mentally. It is no secret that the incidence of alcoholism, drug addiction and acute psychosis is greater among physicians than the general population. My advice to you must therefore be that you aim to achieve that calmness of mind, that composure that comes only when the physician knows himself and is secure in his work. Return to the simple truths so well expressed in Osler's essays. Do not be beguiled by the massive technology of our age. Love of fellow man, humility and conscientiousness will still do more than all the computers of our space age. Cordially yours, Wgsglapa joseph R. DiPalma, M.D. Dean s To the class of 1975: Members of the Graduating Class, please accept my congratulations upon your completion of one more step towards your life in Medicine. At this moment you should be proud of your accomplish- ments as are we of the Faculty. With insight, however, you should also recognize a feeling of incom- pleteness in your training and inadequacy in your knowledge is a part of the hard facts of medical life. Medicine is a service profession where there is no possibility you can do a perfect job. However, if you approach each task with the primary question of what can I contribute towards the welfare of my patient? remembering that the maintenance of your own knowledge is a part of that contribution, you will be a truly great physician and humanitarian. Hahnemann graduates have built a truly excellent image among the profession and among the public. I know that you will continue this great tradition. God speed. , Hugh D. The Infections, roused to a feverish pitch by coach Au- reus and his staff, were able to penetrate the host teams' natural defenses the first period to gain an early advantage. Their attack was led by seven feet tall High Luronidase who showed uncanny ability to drive through the host team's defense for easy layups. Bruce Ellosis capped the Infections' rally and received a well deserved giant Cell ova- tion when he dribbled the full length of the court and put in a behind-the-back basket. After being down by as much as fifteen points in the first half it was all Defenders in the second half. Coach Amedeo Bondi made some substitutions and urged his team to tighten their defense. They showed great intestinal forti- tude by limiting the Infections' high scorer Sal Monella to six points in the second half due to close guarding by Dr. Gutekunst. With fifty-eight seconds to play in the third period, three quick baskets by Drs. Landau, Hammel, and Crowell tied the score for the Defenders. With Dr. Weidanz neutralizing the Infections' Luke O'Sidens, who has been known in the past to destroy the Defenders', the hosts were able to increase their resistance and add to the lead they never relinquished. When the battle was over, the Defenders' locker-room was filled with the sounds of victory while the defeated Infections vowed to bolster their forces and return once more to The Cell to resume combat with the Defenders. K 7s. k 1 h XQI4 -L- -i :gp I.: ul 0. x h f -hd ,ffl It's been another championship sea- son for the Hahnemann Surgeons. The Cut-up Kids , as they're affectionately known throughout the league, have once again demonstrated that wielding a mighty blade wins hockey games. Led by captain Charles Wolferth, the Surgeons have streaked to their fourth consecutive title as an amazed capacity crowd of 131 Class of '75 students looked on. Asked about fan support for the Core III season, Dr. Robert Bower, ace left wing and erstwhile kidney transplanter said, Well, every time I appear, the fans just walk out. 1 I have a cure for breast cancer . . . M- H- Perlman, M-U ,GMM ako- 1 is VP' The fans' overwhelming favorite was goalie Morton Perlman. Although often shot through like a sieve in con- frontations with opponents, Dr. Perlman stood his ground and refused to give an inch. Unfortunately, this ungrudg- ing attitude sometimes carried over into his relationships with the fans. A proponent of the Mayo Clinic style of hockey, Dr. Perlman has all but abandoned his more active role on the ice for a more sedentary one on the bench. Between acupunctures, Dr. Teruo Matsumoto dropped in to provide some adequate goal-tending. 70 N ,, o -Qc Z,z,z,z Z Z Z Z 2 Z A. K. Olsen, MI R11 M- all X F. Tropea, M.D. I c ,H K-. They always walk out on me. R- Bower, 71 'lv--n-..,..,.,,,,m-4-V. Dr. Matsumoto is neither flashy nor spectac- ular in his performance, but he always seems to get the job done. The Phenylbutazone Kid , Dr. Arnold Ber- man, made enough non-appearances during the Core lll season to qualify for the league's Who's I-le Award . Dr. Berman received tough competition from such stars as Drs. Thomas Cain, john Tucker, Donal Billig, the witty Axel Olsen, and Jewell Osterholm. Dr. Osterholm was nearly disqualified from the balloting for having finally appeared on the last day of the Neurosurgeons' Core Ill season. The Surgeons received a team award as the league's most penalized squad. In that contest, Dr. Bower nicked the renal artery while remov- ing a clear cell carcinoma and got a five minute penalty for drawing blood. St. Agnes? Dr. Frank Tropea became frustrated over the tough adhe- sions he was cutting through and got two min- utes for slashing. Dr. Berman became angry when a patient's check bounced and got two minutes for cross-checking. Dr. Olsen placed a myelogram needle in T-12 rather than L-1, and received two minutes for high sticking. Dr. Perlman en- tered an operating suite and without saying a word, got two minutes for interference. The Surgeons look like they'll be strong for years to come, thanks to their two farm teams, the Chester Croziers and the St. Agnes Aggies. Leading the St. Agnes Aggies is their big line of John Cossa, Freder- ick DeClement, and Prank Tropea. Cossa and DeClement combined to post a league high in A-V anasta- moses. Their slogan was shoot those goals then cut those holes . Tropea is reknown as the fastest man with a gallbladder in the league. l-le's also said to possess a mean strombole which also may be the fastest in the league. It looks like the I-IMCI-I Surgeons will be a major force for many years to come. AS FAR AS PCSSIBLE WITHOUT surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly Sz clearly, and listen to others, even the dull Sz ignorant, they too have their story. Alb Avoid loud Sz aggressive persons they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain Sz bitter, for always there will be greater Sz lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Alb Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many persons strive for high ideals , and everywhere life is full of heroism. Alb Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity Sz disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Alb Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue Sz loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. Aly You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees 8a the stars p you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is un- folding as it should. Alb Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors Sz aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. Alb With all its sham, drudgery Sn broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. .314 MAX EHRMANN 0 1927 by Max Ehrmann All rights reserved, Copyright renewed 1954 by Bertha K.
