TRULY. I ENVY YOU. I DO SO IN PART BECAUSE YOU ARE BETTER EQUIPPED TO MAKE SICK PEOPLE WELL THAN ANY GRADUATES IN MEDICINE HAVE EVER BEEN BEFORE-A CIRCUMSTANCE BOTH SATISFYING AND CHALLENGING. I ENVY YOU, TOO. BECAUSE YOU WILL BE PRIVILEGED TO PARTICIPATE IN WHAT I AM CONFIDENT WILL BE AN ERA OF MEDICAL DISCOVERY OF SUCH DIMENSIONS AS TO DWARF ANY THAT HAVE GONE BEFORE. BUT WHILE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CONFER UNPRECEDENTED PER- SONAL BENEFITS ON YOUR PATIENTS. GREAT IMPERSONAL FORCES AF- FECTING GENERATIONS YET TO BE BORN WILL CREATE PROBLEMS OF A QUITE DIFFERENT ORDER AND I HOPE YOU WILL REGARD THEM. AS MUST ALL PEOPLE OF GOOD WILL, AS YOUR CONCERN AND STRIVE IN THE BEST WAY YOU CAN FOR THEIR SOLUTION. I REFER TO POLITICAL AND SOCIAL AND MASS BEHAVIORAL MATTERS. FOR EXAMPLE. THE STIMULATED THREAT OF MAN'S EXTINCTION BY ATOMIC EXPLOSIONS. OVERPOPULATION. RACIAL INTEGRATION. AND THE WIDENING GULF BETWEEN WHAT IS KNOWN AND WHAT CAN BE UNDERSTOOD BY LARGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE. I HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE THAT YOU WILL BE GOOD DOCTORS TO THE PATIENTS WHO COME TO YOU. I URGE YOU TO ASSUME AN EQUAL MEASURE OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELFARE OF MAN IN THE AGGREGATE. NOW. TO EACH OF YOU GOES MY EARNEST WISH FOR A LONG. HAPPY AND REWARDING LIFE, AND MY HOPE THAT YOU WILL REMAIN TO THE END LOYAL TO HAHNEMANN. WHICH DID SO MUCH TO MAKE YOU WHAT YOU ARE. Shh-Boom, Shh-Boom! Pve had enough, cried out the angry sound, It matters not what phase Pm in, you always hang around, Boom-Shh, BoomShh, the murmur wheezed, you better go away, It matters not how loud you get because Pm here to stay. Let's call a temporary truce, I heard the sound implore, Let's redefine the issues of what we're fighting for, You want this heart, I want this heart, the patient wants it too, 'Hue strongest pair will hold the fort-it looks as though yon're through. My strength is definition, you shapeless jelly fish, You're nothing but a grumble, a whisper, and a hiss, Although at times I have my faults-a split Ml, a clang, a bend, I have much to my credit-a beginning, and an end. For you arise from nowhere like a thief out of the night, You follow at my footsteps, and you quiver in my light, I set the pace, Pm clear and strong-sometimes with truth I ring, You ill-defined vibration, you slither, and you cling. Mm-mm the murmur buzzed with glee, you uninspired frump, You may be booming loud or sharp, but all you do is thump! While I can be the whistling wind, or better still a lover's sigh, The rumble of a distant train as it goes racing by. I sometimes come before you-and oft times drown you out, And all I do is murmur, while you are forced to shoutg Innocuous I may be, but I am deadly too, Corrected or neglected Pm more powerful than you! There was a moment of silence, I thought the heart was gone, When in unison I heard them scream, we both will carry on ! Pump on you tough old muscle, the battle is resuming- And then their cries were all drowned out beneath the wild Shh-Booming. You won't believe my story, but maybe late one night, You'll hear a vocal interlude when sound and murmur light, Until then I have living proof of their battle and their doom, Just listen hard you'll hear them- Shh-Boom, Shh-Boom, Sbh-Boom. A vagina, a cervix, an os and me. From my warm little spot on this velvety place, I'm a smug little bug-I'm a pelvic disgrace. Menorrhagia, metrorrhagia keep pounding at my head. That polyp up on cervix erode would like to see me dead. But worst of all, some months ago, a fetus passing by, Squashed my vacuole to bits, and kicked me in the eye. They try to destroy me, for I know too much, I can tell a man's worth just by his touch, They squirt me with gentian and tloraquin too, If they knew I mutated-they'd be in a stew! I really am a kindly soul, I don't want fame or riches, My only pleasure out of lite is giving ladies itches, So great and mighty OB men, please don't be neurotic, This place is big enough for two, so let's be symbiotic. In the last summer about 257 of the student body actively engaged in research activity. The Society yearly organizes an Undergraduate Research Day in the spring at which original student papers are presented, followed by a guest speaker. An attempt is made to keep the student body informed of the research opportunities available and to encourage first hand experience in avenues of exploration in basic science and clinical medicine. AKK was founded in 1888 at Dartmouth Medical College. Beta Phi Chapter was formed at Hahnemann in May 1948. They recently added a new chapter house on 16th Street. The group, the youngest at Hahnemann is also one of the most enthusiastic-as evidenced by the gala spirits frequently surrounding the house. AKK boasts of a well-rounded social program. There are monthly dinner meet- ings and frequent gatherings. Not to neglect the scholastic side of things, Presi- dent Fred Cressman, points with pride to a budding library and an active scholastic aid program. V. Croft, only man to hold 5 jobs at once and still pass, typifies the indomitable spirit of the fraternity. :lglqi Zliamhha Kappa glfraterniig Qlpha Feta Gfhupter ' ii 0 ' 1, 5 19 ll 24' .lli ' 5 Halynzmann cgiiliehizal Glullege PHI LAMBDA KAPPA-Front Row, left to right: B. The Alpha 4 2. - Beta Chapter at Hahnemann was organized in 1926 and is one of 16 chapters. 4 The purposes of this fraternity are to maintain among medical students and physicians, regardless of race, creed or color, a spirit of fraternalism, of mutual aid and moral support and to advance the concepts of the medical sciences. At the 1960 National Convention in Boston., this chapter was voted the best in the nation. Pictured is Mark May with Best Chapter trophy. They also braved storms of protest and prominently displayed bravery by breaking the sex barrier and admitting female members. W1-ll known seniors include Robert Fomalont, whose heart lrumor has itj only beats twice a day: coach Gutlohn, who can be identified by a large black bag carrying drug samples, and Glantz, the only reported case of cerebral edema never to have lost consciousness. Brotherhood for all typifies the atmosphere of Phi Beta Pi fraternity. From their recently acquired Chapter house on Summer Street emanates fraternal understanding. Lead by Dave Lucchino, their genial president, Phi Beta Pi is swiftly becoming one of the most im- portant fraternities at Hahnemann. Beta Kappa chapter was founded here in 1947 as an outgrowth of Pi Epsilon Rho. Originality, vigor and freshness of outlook mark their approach to schol- astic and social undertakings. With A. Phi Delta Epsilon, founded at Cornell University Medical School in 1904, is pledged to the three ideals of loyalty, scholarship and fraternity. At the present time, 47 undergraduate chapters in leading medical colleges and 35 graduate clubs in major cities uphold the Phi IJ IC triad. Beta Zeta Chapter at Hahncmann. is over 40 years old, having been founded in 1919, and is proud of its hundreds of alumni members who have furthered the interests of medicine, and of Hahnemann, livery year Phi Delta Epsilon brings a nationally known medical figure to Hahnemann to deliver the Aaron Brown Memorial Lectureship to the entire student body and faculty staff. The Initiation Ball and the Five Chapters Dance are annually supported by Beta Zeta, as well as the three other undergraduate and the graduate chapters in the city. In addition to these two formal dances, the chapter also sponsors numerous informal get togethers and parties throughout the school year. Minutia Masters. Fraternity president is William Toth, We Alvologzie When this book is published It may create a storm. We'll be told about the copy And our many flaws in form. So let us take a minute And explain our naughty baby, And when you hear the story Youill forgive us, maybe. For one absent senior picture We can only tell you this Cameras can't take phantoms Or hits won't make a miss. The IFC, a noble group, May be missed a lot, The photographer was present The IFC was not. Please forgive us Medicine, For the things we left unsaid. If we gave you your due praise, It would go to your head. And Surgery, your format's new You wield a mighty knife, But remember, now and then, You're not a way of life. For all the people, we left out A slight was not intended. Our space was not quite adequate, So please don't feel offended. For senior personalities Which we did not discuss Remember them just as they were And don't rely on us. If you think this book lacks depth You're absolutely right After four such heavy years Wie tried to keep it light. YVe've merely given you the key To open what is yours alone. So now and then you may recall A set of memories of your own. Z THE MEDIL' ST F U, '.' '99 e. gn. N-T, M S. A13 lf C.. Jl X Sw? In order to learn how drugs affect this internal clock, SK8tF scientists use a test in which a monkey must hit a lever after an interval of 20 seconds to obtain food. When he is under the influence of certain drugs, time flies and he misses the pay-off period by hitting the lever too late. Other drugs make time drag and he misses the pay-off period by hitting the lever too soon. Because one of the characteristics of many mental disorders is a distortion of the time sense, observing how drugs affect this primary psychological process may reveal valuable in- formation that will help SKSLF scientists in dis- covering effective treatments for mental illness.
