One of the more rewarding dividends of the practice of medicine is the opportunity for continuing growth which it affords-an opportunity of greater dimensions, perhaps, than exists in any other pursuit you might haxfe chosen. Traditionally we think of' education as an expe- rience of the young formative years. But medicine is a lifetime of learn- ing, and in this sense, yours is the privilege of remaining young as long as you live. I earnestly hope that each of you will exercise that privilege to the full, recognizing that your formal right to hold life in your hand -the doctor's degree-is but the prologue to acquiring the kind of com- petence and judgment which such an awesome right morally requires. These crowded years of indoctrination have afforded you little chance to develop extra-professional, or cultural, interests, yet I hope you are sensible of the value of such interests in the life of a doctor and that when you are in a position to regulate your time, as you soon will be, you will embrace them. They can enrich your years beyond measure. Finally, to each of you, I extend my heartfelt wish for a full measure of years, achievement and satisfaction. Its birth as a science is ri corded many centuries before the Christian era. Bein the oldest division of the discipline of medicine, it only fitting that by means of its study and its metho the student begins his journey into knowledge. The firi subject to be studied. it is likewise the first to nurtul and strengthen those attributes and qualities so essenti: to the physician: for there is patience in dissection, pe severance in memorization, and the exercise of intellei tion in the perception of significant relationships. Too often the debt of the student to his teacher is a but forgotteng not so in anatomy where the names of th great workers have been enshrined in the nomenclatui -Galen, Malphigi, Hunter, Stensen, His and countle: others. The debt owed to these, our teachers of time pas is inestimable: many worked under adverse condition frequently in dehance oi existing lawsgthe references tt which they had access were meager and often inaccurate their only encouragement lay in their insatiable desii to dispel ignorance and to clarify doubt. Vie realiz with gratitude that upon their labors and their life work our present knowledge is constructed. ij . - I . I ': Rl A l' -a me ' . 4 1 '.' for X ,fav T- 3 ,tl 1 If I 1 if G l i t M '- . 1. Their viability requires that they be bound and linked into an integrated whole-and so it is that the student ol' medicine fits his facts into the unifying lramework ol pathology. A considera- tion ol' its place in the turric'uluin makes apparent its vast importance: during the first year ol' school the student delves into the normally lunctioning body! pathology deals with the derangeinents ol normal anatomy and physiology as they occur in various disease states and so points toward the study ol clinical medicine. Rosario NI aniglia, NLD. wr Clinical Patholo The study of pathology is more than the gross and microscopic alterations in structures that are unearthed at the necropsy table. Indeed, these abnormal- ities are but the end stage reflecting dy- namic derangements of physiology and biochemistry in the living state. The de- tection of these derangements by con- trolled laboratory methods has given rise to the maiden science of clinical path- ology. Advances in this field of medicine have been most rapid in the last few decades and the information provided assumes ever increasing importance in the total clinical picture of disease. '76 3 I Public Bathhouse, 13th century Public Health It was during our Sophomore year that we first came into con- tact with Dr. Pascal Lucchesi and the Department of Public Health. Following a series ol' introductory lectures and roll calls by Dr. Bogucki, held trips were taken to various parts of the city, and we were able to study the wonderful workings of that weird combination of government and medicine. Highlights ol' the year were the exacting weekly quizzes Qlifhy did Benjamin Rush fire that cannon?j and the informal attitude of the final exam, which Dr. Bogucki jokingly took with us, and topped all grades with a resounding 64. Bless that curve! The 3rd and 4th year courses were given each Saturday morn-- ing in Klahr. This stimulating hour saw the appearance of several outstanding guest lecturers, city public health oflicials, visiting professors of almost everything, doctors, nurses, and several of Dr. Lucchesi's relatives. Key subjects, ranging from mosquito control in Camden to lobbying in Harrisburg were discussed, and we came away from the course qfinallylj with the knowledge that the health and Li welfare of the public, and the control of Salmonella in potato salad were well assured by those who serve with Public Health. Iincompassing as it does, pathology, surgery, hygiene, and especially physiology and bacteriology, one might be safe in stating that it deals with the study of disease, its etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis on a therapy, exclusive of the actual performance of surgery. Such a definition might be safe-but hardly adequate. Despite the ethereal conhnes, the specialty was rec- ognized as such even during the early period of Egyptian medicine. At this time all disease was thought to be due to parasites and when these could not be demonstrated it was postulated they were invisible but none the less re- sponsible for the pathology. The times have seen enor- mous changes since this parasite-minded era. But, throughout the ages Internal lNIedicine has retained one characteristic-that it remains a haven for the investi- gator, the thinker, the intellectual whose great joy lies in the solution ol a complicated problem.. Two years ago Hahnemann welcomed Dr. john H. Moyer as head ol' the Department ol' Medicine. Ably assisted by a lull time teaching stall, and with the con- tinued excellent etlort ol' our regular staff, advances in teaching, patient care, and research, have been remark- able and impressive. john H. Dr. Bruce V. Macliadyen bstetric -G The dawn of obstetrics, in recorded literature, dates to the time of the ancient Greeks, there being several treatises on the subject in the Corpus I-lippocraticunif' Midwives dominated the period, physicians being consulted for complications. Contributions to the science were insignificant until the nine- teenth century, which witnessed the inception of great discoveries and advances in the field. This included the work of Semmelweiss on puerperal sepsis, of -Iohn Braxton Hicks on the management of abnormal presentations, and of Ludwig Bandl on obstructed labors, to cite but a few. Because so much of present gynecology is of a surgical and endocrinologic nature, we can Find practically no reference to it in the writings of old. lt is properly an offspring of our own century, partaking as has all medicine since 1900, in rapid theoretical and technical development. ig :QQ l ,,iXmltxlilfl , . llg fffaff. General surgery and the six sur- gical specialties are being trans- formed into new programs for grad- uate and undergraduate Hahne- mann. The past year has felt the vigors of the new head and a changed department. XVith more responsibilities rele- gated at both ends of the training ladder, the 1959 senior was in the middle ol that laclcler, busy' in Ap- plied Sophomore Surgery. The new program with its exclusion of seniors from very needed outpatient train- ing, was slightly' redeemed by the sur- gical conferences. Attracting more outside surgeons lor their varied views, and with a stimulus to corre- late pathology 'with the cases pre- sented, the conferences were well- attendecl by students, house and visiting stall alike. Surgical research has been en- couraged by new grants: the teaching stall' has sought newer inetlrocls lor diagnosis and treatment. Students and house stall have participated in more research projec ts. The traditional Hahneinann ac- cent has been upon the practical, the general practice preparation, the front lille ol' inedicine. Clnric-nt snr- gical training is oriented toward acacleniic and specialized types ol medicine. The I-Iahnemann Undergraduate Wives Association was founded in 1950 as an outcome of the Phi Delta Epsilon Wives Club. This club realizing the benefits derived from such an organization opened its member- ship to include the wives of all undergraduate students at Hahnemann. The purposes of the organization are to promote friendship and to render service to Hahnemann Medical College by providing needed equipment for teaching purposes. The monthly meetings are held either as a formal meeting at which a guest speaker is present, or as an informal social get-together, thus providing an opportunity for the students' wives to meet each other and get away for awhile from the clinical atmosphere which follows each husband home. Our organization has been a rapidly expanding one, and one which we hope in future years will be of even greater service to Hahnemannf ' ndergraduate Research Soele y The Undergraduate Research Society was formed 13 years ago, the first organization of its kind in a medical school. Day by day one cannot see what he is doing or where he is goingg each day seems unprofitable in itself and on no calendar day can we see that we began to understand and correlate theory with our clinical experiences. Our development as professional men and women both theoretically and culturally seems to us trivial and we shun to record it: but if it were to be left unrecorded we might lose sight of the ideals and objects with which we began our study in the medical field. i Our frustrations and inspirations, the unexpected miracle of Ending our own genius or detecting our deficiencies, the unforgettably long hours of study and exacting work, the personal conflicts with which we are faced are not lost in the futurity of our thinking but may be recounted by the mere leafing through of these pages.
