These have been full and hard years. Now that Graduation approaches, we are aware that you-having entered to learn-are about ready to go forth-to serve. The formal part of your education, except for the interneship, is almost completed, and you have experienced the great satisfaction of acquiring knowledge, and further, have realized the full fruition of your professional training will be accomplished only by the continuation of being a student for the remainder of your professional lives. It will be more fun being a student when there is no formality of medical school. The realization of a well-balanced uniform medical education is particularly remarkable when one considers the blending and molding that is necessary in the development of so many young people from a great variety of premedical environments. In your class of 84 mem- bers, fifty-nine, or approximately 70 per cent, are Pennsylvanians: sixty-three members, or 75 per cent, have had their premedical training in twenty different colleges or universities in Pennsylvania, twenty- ive members, or approximately 30 per cent, are citizens of States other than Pennsylvania, twenty-one members, or 25 per cent, have received their premedical education in fourteen colleges or universities outside Pennsylvania. The average age is about twenty-seven years. As of this writing, ifty-one members, or 60 per cent, are married, and have forty-two children. This is a cross-section of young life today, and Hahnemann is proud of the accomplishments of her new crop of alumni this year, and considers it a cherished privilege to have con- tributed so much to the progress of American Medicine. To each and every member of The Class of 1953 I wish to extend heartiest congratulations, and every good wish for a happy, healthful and prosperous future. AML! .iran Lrg . Alpha l-iappa Kappa Four years ago, the Beta Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Kappa had approxi mately twenty members, had no fraternity house, was inancially unstable and had an inactive faculty. Now, however, we are pleased to announce that Alpha Kappa Kappa is one of the strongest and largest fraternities at Hahnemann. During the past four years, we have built up our membership to where it num- bers sixty active members. We are a well-organized group who now have a fraternity house of their own and have, through concerted efforts, completed the remodeling of the basement and expect to hold monthly social affairs in the immediate future. Our faculty is one of the most active and strong at Hahnemann. They have been extremely helpful both in making us inancially solvent and in their invaluable guidance in fraternity affairs. The entire fraternity wishes to extend its sincere thanks to the outgoing senior members for their active and enthusiastic participation in all fraternity functions during their four years at Hahnemann. Each and every one of them contributed immeasurably to the progress and growth of the fraternity. It was upon this nucleus of members that the fraternity was able to build itself up into our present status. Two of the outgoing seniors, George Glenn, last year 's president and Vincent Desiderio, current president, both carried out their duties very efficiently. The outgoing senior members are: Tom Carter, Jim Day, Dom Monta, Vincent Desiderio, Jim Squadrito, George Glenn, Brad White, Hugh Knight, Dave Kelleher, Bob Dixon, Dom Pagliaro, Mike Sta matakos. Ours is one of the non-sectarian groups on campus. Our criteria for membership reside in the high standards of scholarship, personal integrity, and social compatibility of the individual. By having frequent congenial social affairs open to all we join in that excel- lent spirit of reciprocity which exists among the fraternal groups of our school, and which characterizes so Well the friendliness of all at Hahnemann. With our membership increasing rapidly each year, we look forward toward days of equally increasing benent to our members, our fraternity, and to our fine school. Beta Zeta chapter has been an active unit at Hahnemann for over twenty years, and is one of Philadelphia 's four chapters of one of the nation's largest non-sectarian medical fraternities. This year these chapters moved out of our old house at Ninth and Spruce Streets to take occupancy of new quarters at 313 South Twelfth Street. Our schedule of activities this year included several house parties, at which We were pleased to find many Hahnemannians in attendance. Our social crown- ing event was the five chapter dance, this year held at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel on March 7. This year we presented Dr. Louis Katz, director of cardiovascular research at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, as the speaker at our annual lectureship, April 13. In addition to social and scientific activities, Beta Zeta chapter this year initi- ated a cultural activities prograiu under the leadership of senior Jerome Karasic. The program includes lectures and discussions of art, music, philosophy, politics, and in short, a variety of subjects which should interest anyone, and is designed especially for the upper classmen who have more time for such interests, and, having acquired a more staid outlook, are somewhat less interested in parties as their main form of recreation. In these ways Phi Dee E is endeavoring to make its activities complete from the students' first steps in medical school to his first steps as a budding physician. K The Hahnemann chapter, Alpha Beta, was activated and became a memlicr ol' the national organization in lSl2T. Since that time the fraternity has grown both in scope and in number of graduate units. -I Scientific meetings play an important part in the fraternity program and are held once a mouth. Lectures, films, Ul't's. are designed so that each class will be able to contribute in some manner. Once each year we have a guest lecturer for the Medical College at large. Guests such as llrs. O. W. Wangen- Steen, NValter Daxnashek, and Max Thorek have been presented. This year Dr. Samuel Levine spoke on the topic, Rest-In the Treatnient of Heart Failure. Our social life lighteus the academic aspects of medical school. Monthly so- cials are held at our recently acquired house. Since that time it has flourished into the largest of the five fraternities at Hahnemann. We number brethren in every state of the union, and in the foreign lands where we are to practice medicine. The present undergraduate body consists of sixty-five fraters, from varied backgrounds and of different personalities. They all strive together to keep honor and spirits high, and to maintain a desirable academic level for the gratification of themselves and of Phi Chi. This year the Fraternity bought a new house, near the College and Hospital, on 1624 Summer St. Phi Chi has established this house not only for its own brothers, but for whomever of the undergraduate body is seeking fraternalism and friendship.
