After fifteen or more years of being talked to, at, around, and asleep, the student enters the world of clinical medicine and does a little talking on his own. XYhat thoughts run through the heads of those lirst patients of his while he advises, would be very interesting and perhaps enlighten- ing, but they probably never will be known. He moves in an en- viromnent of white linen and silvery instruments, in which it requires many reams of vari- colored paper to move a patient a few feet. He takes for granted diagnostic aids which would cause the sophisticated Hippocrates' eyes to stare in child-like wonder- ment. He tries to stav on the trail amid a confusing abundance of signs, symptoms, and carloads of red herring. Gr he labors fruit- lesslv to elicit something which ,-as g1iifhs13'i1g'faPatli1:st112 'i11is?1iW5S?i?F that 'meiiiciimijis iaff as W61I 24S12 ,i5aier'1QifgileE5isS ellavdsfiffilili Whlilii,:55fif?9fg452E??ll:?5g?056 and ' . i 573934 t akin to Etlfiatf' s Cliangss-rwienfeelmg ofiaiifegjgiidffjustly so. N SCRIPTIO Dr. Williaiti Bill Schmidt was the hub of a bogged down wheel. Some of the spokes were broken, others twisted, and still others strong and ready. At such a time in his varied career we met him. As acting dean of a proud institution begin- ning to crumble as a result of slow decay, he was instrumental in selecting us to compose the class of '49. A firm believer that dead issues are for dead minds only, he dealt with real issues. He was in- strumental in formulating the solution of the prob- lems which have now ceased to trouble Hahne- mann. To us he has been a friend and patron, to our successors, he will be even more. Was mann Weiss, seiht mann. -Goethe. One vainly wishes that his yvords on specific occasions had the permanence of poetic touch or philosophic weight. But the best that I can do is to reaffirm my deep affection for all of you as a group and to express my personal gratitude for the friendly camaraderie that I have been priv- ileged to enjoy with a number of your constituent members throughout a tetrad of memorable years. Although these brief and ineffectual words are transient, perhaps futile. in purpose. yet they are meant to embody my continuing admiration for a group of hustling. aggressive and determined stu- dents yvho have never relented in their efforts to achieve their medical objective-come hell or high water. 'IChildren of the Storm is the sobriquet that I should choose to associate yvith the class of 1949. As a group. you have been mauled by the ax of drastic change as it has carved your destiny on the chopping block of experimental education. Yet, despite the vicissitudes that have arisen during this bewildering period of modified rosters. curricula, regulations. standards and innumerable other changes and vexations. you have never faltered, you have maintained your balance and you have at long last come to a triumphant finale. If-as yve are taught-adversity purges the soul. hardship proves the mettle and unremitting toil and sacrifice rehne the personality. then your class will indeed become a shining exponent of the dynamic and renascent movement at Hahnemann, Although my mind floods with memories as I scan the recent years, yet from this dross of illusion and frustration there crystallizes an optimism of hope and security for our school and especially for its l949 standard bearers that is more than com- pensatory for the many misadventures en route. Vale! 'XYith cominingled feelings of humility and pride. I fervently yvish all of you on the threshold of your career. a lifetime of professional service, satisfaction and eminence with the accompanying overtones of abundant personal happiness. -V011 .tif lI10'Zl'II 111' svf of 51111 :Ind r01111f the arts 1'l111f 'YOU 1111110 done, --Ind, c'011111'111g, find Ono Xfff-lfl'IIhX'fI1Q dvvd, OIIU -zcora' That cased flu' I11'111'f of 111.111 'ZUIIO 11011111- OHL' 11Ia11rv 1110.vf klilltll.
