'Q x g Our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand. -Thomas Carlyleg As a professor of medicine at Temple University, Dr. Brown es- tablished an enviable record. His appointment as head of the depart- ment at Hahnemann in 1948 was most welcome. Dr. Brown is well known in internal medicine circles throughout the country. He was one of the earliest certified special- ists by the American Board and helped develop the policy of this important Board. An active mem- ber of the College of Physicians, he is an influential cog in the wheel of progress. Aside from his many teaching laurels, Dr. Brown pos- sesses a winning smile and an in- gratiating personality. The teaching of medicine has undergone signifi- cant changes in all medical schools. Hahnemann can boast of the most progressive system of clinical education in the United States. Beginning in the Sophomore year, the student is indoctrinated early. Physical diagnosis and case taking serve to stimu- late the neophyte's appetite for clinical instruction. Dr. Lane delivered a superb set of lectures on diagnosis to inaugurate the Junior section. W'ith stethoscopes outstretched and auditory nerves tense, we listened to Dr. Gec-kler's heart records. Hollywood's loss was Hahnemann's gain when Dr. Crellin decided to teach. His unorthodox methods and ubiquitous personality had an'iniec- tious quality. The medical wards were under the The physician must not only be prepared to do what is right himself, but also to make the patient, the attendants, and the externals cooperate. -Hippocrates-Aphorisms.

After fifteen or more years of being talked to, at, around, and asleep, the student enters the world of clinical medicine and does a little talking on his own. XYhat thoughts run through the heads of those lirst patients of his while he advises, would be very interesting and perhaps enlighten- ing, but they probably never will be known. He moves in an en- viromnent of white linen and silvery instruments, in which it requires many reams of vari- colored paper to move a patient a few feet. He takes for granted diagnostic aids which would cause the sophisticated Hippocrates' eyes to stare in child-like wonder- ment. He tries to stav on the trail amid a confusing abundance of signs, symptoms, and carloads of red herring.
