DHS and the French Department gained a new teacher, Mr. McGimsey, a 1970 graduate of the University of North Carolina brought with him an excitingly different year, one packed with ventures into France of long ago. The story of a struggle through a French novel, daily mental battles with grammar, and an arm full of albums containing many popular American songs sung in French. Viewing of the play Tartuffe by Moliere gave students a taste of French satire. The play was in English, and had a Southern setting. Also adding to the enrichment of French students was the annual Christmas caroling. Everybody loves a party. French students are no exception to this rule. Trips to the Burke County Fair and the Village Inn allowed the students to really get to know their new teacher.

“Getting high” off numbers was a good trip experienced by most math students. Although some days seemed like “bummers,” the flashbacks usually came in time for Mr. Robinson or Mr. Hollifield’s tests. Always struggling with Physics experiments, trigonometric graphs, and independent research, math students found Mr. Robinson’s humor helpful. Our mathematical “castle” was built on a foundation of general math and Algebra | classes, a first tier of Geometry pupils, a second tier of Algebra I! students, and a lofty tower comprised of Physics and Advanced math scholars. ye)
