Middle English Studied And Mastered Pygmalion, the new practice of using every Friday as grammar day, English literature, which involved an “all star’ cast recording of Beowulf, and a study of short stories started the Advanced English classes off to a fast year. After studying Old English of Anglo-Saxon times, classes learned to speak Middle English. Philosophy, Camelot, films, and notebooks kept students busy both in and out of class. Helped by the arrival of new English books, the students of Mrs. McNeil’s classes met the challenge of conquering the interesting, different material. Not only did they master a new book, they also read and studied the dramas Macbeth and Julius Caesar. Biweekly spelling tests summed up the overall picture of a typical English class. 20
