D-Mr. Clark points an accusing finger at typing student for looking at keys. E-Mrs. Silver Abernathy reads a current magazine to stay up with the news. “Eyes on copy. Type!” echoes through the business room as students prepared for weekly timed writings. Although students were encouraged by Mrs. and Mr. Clark at first to type on the exploration level, speed with control was stressed in all business courses. All typing basics were taught in the first year, while students planning to enter the field of business administration, either in college or on the job, embarked for a second year into the fascinating world of type-writers, calculators, and duplicators. Employees of the “Hamilton Cake and Pastry Company” learned to type purchase orders, office memoes, and answer all correspondence coming into their respective “offices.” Across the hall and fifty-five minutes ater, many of the same students prepared to encounter the mighty “tape recorder,” a daily part of shorthand. Early in the year students were introduced to their filing practice sets with which the shorthand classes increase and extend their filing knowledge. 19 Middle English Studied And Mastered Pygmalion, the new practice of using every Friday as grammar day, English literature, which involved an “all star’ cast recording of Beowulf, and a study of short stories started the Advanced English classes off to a fast year. After studying Old English of Anglo-Saxon times, classes learned to speak Middle English. Philosophy, Camelot, films, and notebooks kept students busy both in and out of class. Helped by the arrival of new English books, the students of Mrs. McNeil’s classes met the challenge of conquering the interesting, different material. Not only did they master a new book, they also read and studied the dramas Macbeth and Julius Caesar. Biweekly spelling tests summed up the overall picture of a typical English class. 20 A-Randy Treadway is confronted by Mrs. McNeil again for supposedly tripping people. B-While Mrs. McNeil helps her neighbor, Don Deal waits eagerly for class to begin again. C-Pausing while students catch up, Mrs. McCall glances at her notes. D-Mrs. McCall ponders at point brought up by one of her Advanced English students. E-Not quite sure of an answer, Colleen Price receives help from Mrs. McNeil. F-Always full of zeal, Mrs. McCall spreads enthusiasm for English throughout her classes tM AS 22 Vocational Students Staged A-Mr. Hildebran checks wage increase. B-Mr. Franklin confirms job appointment. C-Mr. Cooper aids in setting type. D-Mr. Cooper’s mechanical mind at work. E-No machine is too difficult for the hands of skillful Mr. Wright. F-Mr. Franklin plans day’s work. hristmas Drive After lunch while most students forged on into the second half of a school day, vocational students left campus to conquer the world of business. Traveling to different points throughout the country such as Rader’s, Roses, and the Ham House, the students of DE and ICT go to their respective jobs. Films, field trips, candy sales, and a gigantic Christmas drive to help the needy all combined to make Mr. Franklin’s and Mr. Hildebran’s classes exciting ones. Adding to the enrichment of the Graphics Arts Department were visits in December to the Graphics Arts Department of Appalachian State University and to the Charlotte Merchandise Mart in March where representatives of different companies demonstrating varied types of machines. Helping with the publication of material for the county such as the Lyceum, the Wolverine Scene, and report cards was the addition of a new Varityper. 23 Marital Problems Discussed In Sociology -Clean-up day Mr. Hemphill appears “all tied up.” -Mr. Mitchell says, “‘Peace unto you.” -Mrs. Sutton observes students. '-Mr. Hemphill brainstorming. -Explaining American Democracy is Mrs. Sutton. -Mr. Mitchell hard at work. Bringing into focus the co ntributions of past civilizations mingled with those of modern times, the History Department headed by Mrs. Sutton created stimulating atmosphere for those who have historical minds. On class discussions in sociology of social problems stemming from marriage, drugs and alcoholism were conducted and sometimes referred by Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Hemphill. Even though term papers and book reports lie dormant in the back of each student’s mind as he entered the world of economics and sociology, every benefit derived from these courses continues with us as we face the haunting world of tomorrow. 2 French Teacher Toured Paris Christmas ANS w pe ater Oe SS ty 0 see 2 8 s § a ees a) SoA . = s 2 Sauce Se = az is} rw Sse 28 Se) ms ” Qo% o SsSe § BOs cs SR Be S8ix “SS ec lroa cz ez 6° See % S oO D0 2B SO) © SS i oc s EsO Se oso § SQVesyes ise set S.8X G08 OXFseCE CESSES WTHOQOWY carols. The story of a struggle through a French novel, daily mental battles with grammar, and an arm full of albums containing many popular American songs sung in French. Viewing of the play Tartuffe by Moliere gave students a taste of French satire. The play was in English, and had a Southern setting. Also adding to the enrichment of French students was the annual Christmas caroling. Everybody loves a party. French students are no exception to this rule. Trips to the Burke County Fair and the Village Inn allowed the students to really get to know their new teacher. 28 Visual Aids Highlighted Math A-Mr. Hollifield gazes around room at students. F-Looking up from book, Mr. Robinson quietens class with a glance. “Getting high” off numbers was a good trip experienced by most math students. Although some days seemed like “bummers,” the flashbacks usually came in time for Mr. Robinson or Mr. Hollifield’s tests. Always struggling with Physics experiments, trigonometric graphs, and independent research, math students found Mr. Robinson’s humor helpful. Our mathematical “castle” was built on a foundation of general math and Algebra | classes, a first tier of Geometry pupils, a second tier of Algebra I! students, and a lofty tower comprised of Physics and Advanced math scholars. ye) Chemistry Expanded In More Often Labs Wide open was the world of discovery in the fields of Science, as the keen, young minds of Physical Science, Biology, and Chemistry students probed into the realms of the unknown. Larger and more contemporary laboratory experiments made class time entertaining as well as educational. New textbooks for Biology, Modern Biology, and Chemistry, Concepts in Chemistry, not only modernized but advanced the science department to a higher level of achievement. 30 SPL eS eee eee CP PEI AT IS PAS, co sibe Catia as ate teanreeintMies: EFI Ge toric g rs. eet eis 4 % . ees oes ENO RSE eens A-Mr. Morgan at his best!! She was greatly honored as to receive the “Professional Woman Award of the Year” in the fall of 1970. Comprised of classes learning the basics of cooking and sewing the Home Economics Department thrives with life as busy girls work. Not in the six weeks written course nor in the car, it just is not done. Whether its his appealing personality or the sight of Mr. Roper’s biceps has yet to be determined. Beginning with parallel parking, moving on to city traffic, and then finally pregressing to driving on interstate. Driver’s Education is one class one had better not forget. With the beginning of the new school year, Drexel High gained a full time guidance counselor. Though not a new face in the halls, Mrs. Gregory, has added much to DHS. eee te Bg 33 34 D.H.S.’s Administrative Team A- Coach Shull contemplates activities of upcoming school day. Hallyburton-Principal; Mr. Merlin Shull-Assistant Principal. Who’s Who? If anyone can answer this question it Is Mrs. Epley and Coach Shull. Although DHS has a small enrollment, the job of record keeping is not easy. It is Margaret’s job to keep such tedious records straight. The Coliseum, alias gym, is ruled with a strong stick by Coach Shull. Those who enter its doors are soon to find this out. iy l il 5 mnns wasELLUCEEA LILI 0991: Hype ; a A ivities Act Student Council Sets New Style In Dress Under the leadership of the only lady president in Drexel High within the last decade, the fair sex of the school were finally allowed to wear whatever they pleased. Another improvement by the Council was a new system of voting for all major elections in the school. The new procedure was designed to acquaint the students with voting procedure used when the eighteen-year olds get to vote. Students were required to register and then vote during designated times of the day. 36 Combining their efforts this year the very active Vica and Deca Clubs collected toys, food and clothes for underpriviledged children in the surrounding community. Earlier in the year the clubs held candy sales and had great success. Vica And Deca Help Needy | Paper Staff Adds Pep And Color Vivacious cheering from our Pep Club and the coverage of that spirit and vitality from the Paper Staff helps students become more involved in school activities. Sparked by the presence of a new International bus, the honkin’ appearance of another, and that minor detail known as checks, the Drexel Bus Driver’s Club got off to a “clutching start”. A first for the bus drivers was a refresher course given in November by Mr. Woodall. Though most of the day was spent laughing at one another, the time was well spent and will become an annual outing for the club. Two driver’s attempt to put everyone in the Christmas spirit and an eventful party given by Mr. Hallyburton made the year worth remembering. Being one of the most active clubs in our school was the goal of Mr. McGimsey and Mrs. Pittman, French Club leaders. Club members went bowling, attended the movies, enjoyed a French restaurant, and Christmas caroled on the streets of Drexel. 39 F.T.A. Learns Value Of Teaching Guided with the leadership of Mrs. Ruth Sutton and officers, the Future Teachers of America was established again this year through teaching labs and reading of reports. With June Roupe as president, the Future Homemakers of America lived an exciting year participating in many contests between local schools. 40 To develop their skills even further, the Industria’ and Graphic Arts clubs met monthly to work on projects. eee ee 42 Active Betas Attended Conventions LAL A-Initiates do can-can for Senior Betas-all part of the program. E-New Betas give Mr. Mitchell ‘three cheers. ’’ Community wide projects again were preeminent with the Beta Club of DHS. Members of the organization collected clothing and toys for the White Christmas project. These donations were distributed to five needy families in the surrounding area. Conventions were also on the year’s business agenda. Betas attended the Northwestern District meeting as part of the program of group discussions on the population explosion, the world community and the draft. This meeting saw Drexel Beta, Cindy Rector, elected vice-president of the district. In the spring of the year the Beta members travelled to the State Convention. Under leadership of Mrs. Julia Pittman and club president Dan Hoyle these experiences proved fruitful. 43 iss Hi-Miss - Peggy Ayers ior M Jun Se So: Be Senior Miss Hi-Miss - Debbie Abee 45 ical Production t: Third Mus Camelo soe, Chorus Performed In Camelot A delightful Christmas program as well as a splendid performance in the Spring Concert highlighted a unique school year with the Drexel Chorus.
