Our teachers that year were Mrs. Odes Huffman and Miss Jenny Lee Wil- son. We take this opportunity to thank all our teachers from the first grade up for their thoughtfulness, kindness, and guid- ance in preparing us for high school. The eighth grade is one we’ll never forget, when the boys helped win the war by making bread boards, whenever they could spare time from developing pictures. The most exciting moment of our grammar school days was our graduation from grammar school. By this time 27 of the 82 had either moved away or dropped out. In the ninth grade we were formally introduced to the definition of knot heads” under the guidance of Mr. Hally- burton. Farell Dobb” Lambert came to us from Valdese. To equalize the gain” (Dobb’s suggestion) we lost twelve mem- bers. In the tenth grade Betty Lou Hollifield came to us from Valdese and we lost five members, leaving forty-two of the fifty- five. This year our class had nine members on the varsity Baseball Club. In the eleventh grade we gained Caro- lyn Yount from Montreat. This year the members added honor to the class by maintaining in three years their record in Athletics, winning all games but two. Robert Baird, Farrell Lambert, Lloyd Rec- tor, and Betty Jean Abernathy represented the school in the triangular debate at Ap- palachian State Teachers College and their district at Chapel Hill. The dramatics club gave a series of one-act plays at Christmas and a three-act play at the close of school. The twelfth year and our last year started with a trip to Chapel Hill for Senior Day. This year we lost Ray Powell to Valdese, and Boyden Dean and James Stamey to the Army, reducing our num- ber to thirty-six, forty-four per cent of the number starting in the first grade. Lloyd Rector has continued to add to class hon- ors by winning the district Health Ora- torical Contest. As we write this we are looking for- ward to last months of our high school days, knowing there will be pleasant re- gretting as school comes to a close. Historians Nana Williams Virginia Baker 10 Long distance.......please . . . Opera- tor .. . Calling Betty Jean Abernathy, 607-J, Drexel, North Carolina .... This is Ramona Cloer calling from New York. Hello, Betty Jean ... As I finished reading your latest novel I couldn't resist calling you. I’ve been wondering for a long time about our classmates. Where is everyone? You know it has been ten years since we were together. Yesterday 1 had a letter from Max Mc- Neely, a famous airline pilot. Carolyn Yount is hostess on his plane. Max sug- gested a class reunion soon. Can you imagine whose picture was on the front page of today’s paper? Robert Baird’s, the most prominent lawyer in Chicago. The Sport page was another sur- prise. Why! the whole page was about Farrell Lambert, manager of the Red Sox. When I went shopping the other day, I met Gerald Cannon and Billy Camp in one of the largest stores here. I learned that they were owners of the store. A letter from Martha Matthews several days ago says she, Ruby Hoyle and Eliz- abeth Reece have a prosperous beauty par- lor in California. Can you tell me what has happened to the others? Yes, Ramona, I think I know. Homer Cline is directing one of the best bands in the South. Of course, I am speaking of the Drexel High School Band. Peggy Berry is an English teacher. Betty Sue Berry and Betty Lou Holli- field are teaching in the primary grades. Believe it or not, Jimmy Yoder is presi- dent of the College here. Prince Deal is the English professor and Maynard Reece the Art professor. The other day I had some news to put in the newspaper so I walked into the office to see Lloyd Rector. There he sat with his feet propped on the desk as he smoked a 25c cigar. You certainly can tell he is president by looking at him. Last week I went to the Drexel Memo- rial Hospital to visit Lloyd Baird, a Civil Engineer. As I walked in, there stood Virginia Baker, his private nurse, advis- ing him what to do about his lumbago. Hugh Fletcher and Imogene Camp are doctors at the hospital. Ralph Powell is president of the Drexel Furniture Co. Frances Williams and The- resa McAllister are his secretaries. Amaryllis Ramsey is teaching piano in Nebraska. Merritt Williams is an insurance sales- man and his wife, Nana, is his private secretary. Mildred Carswell is a telephone opera- tor in Florida. Harry Fletcher and Milford Williams are auto salesmen in Alabama. Herbert Griffin is owner of a drug store in Georgia. Keith Laws perfected an attachment for the telephone that has reduced rates 50 per cent. If you’ll contact the ones in the East, I’ll see those near home and we’ll plan for our reunion. Au revoir, Ramona Senior Superlatives 1. .Most Studious. . . .Hugh Fletcher 2. Friendliest......Prince Deal, Jr. Frances Williams Martha Matthews 3. Most Popular......Lloyd Baird • Theresa McAllister 4. Best All-Around. Amaryllis Ramsey • Farrell Lambert 1. Most Athletic .Ralph Powell • Ruby Hoyle 2. Most Likely to Succeed—Herbert Griffin • Imogene Camp 3. Wittiest.............Betty Sue Berry • Max McNeely 13 The Senior Class of 1946 have won many honors in debating, public speaking and athletics. The Seniors are also studious at times. Verified Data of individual members: Merritt finally got her. Harry and Hugh are brothers. Betty Sue and Virginia have good busi- ness heads (together). Dobb Lambert has finally admitted that he is crazy—but happy. Amaryllis and Keith aren’t under- weight—it is merely an optical illusion. Billy Camp really does talk—(some- times) . Ramona Cloer isn’t too fond of Con- nelly Springs, etc., etc. It isn’t the school that Maynard objects to; it’s the principle of the thing. Imogene Camp never blushes. Jimmy Yoder never stays in Drexel after dark—so Betty Sue says. Lloyd Baird’s thoughts about Valdese cannot be printed, but OH! the girls therein. Charles Bailey’s doesn't actually wave his hair. It grewed that way. Nana finally got him. Herbert Griffin’s one vice is studying. or T]ot! Martha is allowed to stay up after 9 o’clock—only when Gerald calls. Mr. Lloyd (Don’t Know) Rector, Esq.! Max McNeely’s English ability sur- prises everyone, including himself. Mildred, Elizabeth, and Ruby don’t really live together. Average age of our class is 17 and the average Grade is---------. Doodie (Prince) doed it. Homer Cline no longer has a residence on High Peak. Paul Buff has fulfilled his life long ambition to drive a school bus. Flash — Ralph Powell dated Frances Williams. Betty Lou and Carolyn are bashful in public but Hubba! Hubba! Betty Jean Abernathy is a good excuse for an orator. Milford Williams made an A on con- duct. Peggy and Theresa must love school; they walk every morning. Robert Baird doesn’t live in Morgan- ton; just friendly visits eight nights a week. Statisticians Bob and Dobb 14 Urn VALEDICTORIAN JJu a I fjhfetch ler SALUTATORI AN l am on a CL, CLRSS FLOUUER COLORS mono We have ever held it a maxim, never to do through another what it was possible for us to do.” 15 Jad Witt and 'dJe tament We, the class of 1947, having attained our goal of seniors, leaving behind the trials and tribulations of the thorny paths and rocky roads of knowledge, and be- lieving ourselves to be sane in mind, and sound in body, do hereby will and be- queath our worldly possessions and all the duties that go therewith to our deserving heirs. To Mr. Hallyburton and the faculty, we bequeath our heartfelt appreciation for their untiring efforts in our behalf, and also the inspiration we have gained by our friendly contact with them. To the County Superintendent and to both county and local boards of education, we will our inexpressible gratitude for the advantages they have provided for us during our twelve years in school. To the class of 1948, we leave our rep- utation as the noisest class in school. To the members of the junior Class we make the following individual bequeaths: Betty Jean Abernathy wills her knowl- edge of big words to Evelyn Howie and Colleen Cooper. Lloyd Rector wills his oratorical ability to Rondall Mull. Farrell Lambert leaves his experience in bluffing the teachers into thinking he is a smart boy to Bill McCall. Harry Fletcher bequeaths his love for the fairer sex to Jack Miller. Virginia Baker and Betty Sue Berry leave their job as Business Manager for the annual to any one who would want it. To aid in the task 2 pairs of stout walking shoes, OODLES of patience and, when that fails—as it surely will—two dozen aspirin. Ralph Powell wills to Bob Maye his ability to tease and pester. Elizabeth Reece leaves her quiet and retiring manner to Bonnie Baker. Herbert Griffin and Hugh Fletcher be- queath their mental ability to George Hipps. Nana Baker leaves her knowledge in knowing HOW TO GET A MAN— AND KEEP HIM—to her sister, Thera. Martha Matthews and Frances Wil- liams will their neatness to Mary Elvia Reece and Jean Poteat. Lloyd Baird and Jimmy Yoder leave their ability to raise a racket to Jack Po- teat and Hubert Powell to keep Mrs. Rus- sell from becoming lonely. (What Lloyd and Jimmy can spare is plenty.) Ramona Cloer bequeaths to Juanita Bowman her secret in knowing how to get the boys. Betty Lou Hollifield wills Juanita Watts and Josephine Bass her vitamin pills. Robert Baird leaves his commanding manner to Tommy Lane. Amaryllis Ramsey bequeaths her musi- cal talent to Doris Buff. Theresa McAllister and Peggy Berry will their smiles and pleasant disposi- tions to Romilda Baker and Margie Cline. Homer Cline wills his red shirt to Phil- bert Hallman and Herbert Williams, trusting they will take turns about in wearing it. Maynard Reece leaves his dry wit and 16 Jiasl and dJeitament—(Continued ability to entertain classmates, especially during classes, to Allen Page, and hopes Allen has better success than he. Ruby Hoyle and Mildred Carswell will their athletic powers to Gaynell Page and Ollie Powell. Milford Williams and Paul Buff will their quietness to J. C. Lowdermilk. Max McNeely wills his fondness for loafing to Bob McCreary. Keith Laws leaves his list of reducing exercises to James (Hudgie) Reece. Imogene Camp wills her ability to blush easily to Dorothy Abee. Merriett Williams leaves his position as a bus driver to Jack Burns. To Rawlin Mull and Nick Chapman, Gerald Cannon and Billy Camp will their ability to study—?—during study hall, to keep them quiet. Prince Deal, Jr., leaves his position at the A. P. Food Store in Valdese to Lloyd Powell, hoping that Lloyd will give it as much advertising as he did at school. In witness whereof, we set our seal and signatures, this day of May, nineteen hundred and forty-seven. Class Testators: Betty Sue Berry Jimmy E.
