Page Twelve Classes SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In September, nineteen and thirty-four, seventy-five little boys and girls with then- faces shining came to Drexel School. Some of us were happy, some of us were worried about what the teachers would do to us, but all of us were thrilled that we had started on a journey that could lead to graduation from high school. Only fifty-five in nineteen and forty-one were left to graduate from the Seventh Grade, twenty-seven boys and twenty- eight girls. A few additions swelled our Freshmen enrollment to sixty. We stu- dents felt our importance of being in high school. Miss Short and Mrs. Collins were very helpful in getting us prepared for our Sophomore year. Mrs. Clapp, our homeroom teacher, gave us a party, which we enjoyed very much. During this year we lost several members, but in our Junior year we increased by three members. Betty Jean Bowman from Wichita. Kansas, Betty Walters from Hildebran and Lewis Small from Valdese. The Junior-Senior Banquet, which was held at the Community Build- ing in Morganton, was the highlight of the year. We reached our highest point of dignity (Seniors) with twenty-nine members. Dur- ing this year Gladys Whitener from Hilde- bran and Jolene Miller from Hudson joined us, making a total of thirty-one members. In our Senior year Mr. Hallyburton enter- tained us on several different occasions, which we all enjoyed very much. At the Junior-Senior Banquet we all felt very dig- nified sitting back and watching the Ju- niors do all the work. Now, as our High School days are com- pleted, we prepare to go into the world, knowing that our school days at Drexel have been delightful and eventful. SENIOR CLASS. That the youngest is Jolene Miller, the oldest Troy Fletcher? Bill Hubbard and Troy have the largest heads? That Paul freely admits he is the only intelligent pupil in the Class? The only girl who won’t give an opinion of herself is Betty Bowman. (Too modest). Robert’s one love is studying? That Russell rides a motorcycle? The bashful boy of our class is Max? That Lila likes to sit near the window— we wonder. Truck drivers—have you no- ticed it? Perry Lee enjoys whispering? Why Lewis Small is “Boots”? Mr. Bristol Baker? That Bill Williams was on time once? Where Hal got all the weiners he sold the Lunch Room—we don't? Myrtle and Azalee really don’t live with each other? That Zelma is always smiling? How Peggy spells her middle name? That Beatrice is a Jitterbug? Irwin has never been to Valdese at night? The “flavor” of the hair oil Emmette uses? What Edwyna thinks of her Mother as a teacher is a military secret? Gladys Whitener’s heart throb—(Huh)? That Betty June has a stylish handwrit- ing? Betty Shuffler wants to be an old maid? That Betty Sue Baker appears to be bashful—no one knows, does one? Zeta Lee’s eyes sparkle? That Sudie has two feet—and twelve in- ches short? Margaret Piercy is studying? That Helen has only one right arm? Where am I? What town is this? I must be twenty years older. What does this sign say? “The City of Drexel. Population 65,000. Welcome, vis- itors. Signed: Bill Williams, Mayor.” I must have been away a long time. Drexel has surely changed. Imagine Bill Williams being the Mayor. What beautiful streets! I think I'll walk down this one and see how Drexel has changed. My, what a big theater! Wonder what’s playing? Oh, here it says, “The Dance of the Dragon Fly,” starring Beatrice Shuford and Emmette Deal, with Betty Sue Baker’s All-Girl Band. I'd like to see that, but I haven’t time. There’s somewhere I must go—can't remember where. That’s a large factory over there. It looks like a hosiery mill. The sign says— Robert Franklin’s Drop Stitch Hosiery. I believe I’ll take a look around. Here’s the office! Look at all the girls—why, there’s Peggy Bradshaw and Jolene Miller pound- ing typewriters—am sure they are the head typist. What’s in this department—- First Aid Room and there is Margaret Piercy. I hear machines; over there they are. I bet I know who is the mechanic. Yes, there he is—Russell Coleman, I was right. Got to go—can't waste any more time. Better catch a taxi. Here’s one—“Flet- cher’s Blue Streak.” Rides smooth, too. Better get out here at this grocery store. The name is Hal’s S.S.S. Market”. That means Steal ’em, Sooth ’em, Sell ’em Market. Look at all the pedestrians. There is Bil- ly Hubbard carrying a brief case—he must be a lawyer. It’s getting late and I must move on. Who’s that trying to shake everyone's hand? Why, it’s Max Bryant. He must be campaigning for Governor. I think I’ll cross this street. Better wait as here comes a truck. It’s Ramsey’s Rip ’em. Flip ’em, Gype ’em Dry Cleaners”. Who’s the policeman on the corner? It’s Jimmie Bass—makes a fine policeman. Bet he weighs three hundred pounds. What’s this? Another saloon! Oh, a Beauty Salon. Helen Lane, Lila Cooper and Zeta Lee Whisenant—Face Lifters and Mud Pack- ers. Better Move on; time’s a-wasting. Here’s a candy kitchen. Proprietor — Betty June Walters. Look at that big sign —“Smith’s Sign Company — slogans “Eu- logies and Epitaphs—Z. Smith”. Another sign! Custom built funerals — Mourners furnished after pocketbook examination. Gladys Whitener—Mortician. What’s that odor? Must be a doctor’s office. It is—Dr. Irwin McNeely, M.D.B.S. Bones Set while you wait. I’d better go in— maybe he can help me. Pretty nurses! Per- ry Lee Gurley and Betty Bowman. This is no place for me. Where’s the door? Boy, that was a close one! Where’s all that racket coming from? I believe I hear Azalee Stamey and Myrtle Bradshaw. Must be an athletic field close by. Yes, there it is. I’ll peep thru this crack; yes, there’s Azalee pitching and Myrtle catching. Must be a big game— there's a large crowd. Who’s the man walk- ing across the grounds?— Boots” Small— acts as if he’s boss of this athletic club— probably is. Who's this coming up the street? Why, it’s Sudie and Herbert. What’s this in my pocket? A check, by Jove! I'd better step over to the bank and cash it. Why here’s Betty Shuffler and Edwyna Russell in cages. Good place for those girls! Better—O--------h my head! Where am I? I hear a bell ringing. That’s the tardy bell. I'll be late for class and Mrs. Russell will say, “Bristol Baker, where have you been?” Page Seventeen WALDENSIAN HOSIERY MILLS PILOT FULL FASHION MILLS Classes LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of nineteen and forty-five of the Drexel High School, be- lieving ourselves to be of sound minds and body—do hereby revoke all former wills as null and void, and declare this to be our last will and testament.
