Our Alma Mater, Drewry Mason High, serves the needs of the school and com- munity by trying to foster good citizenship and cultural growth for the present andthe future. It constantly endeavors to meet the individual needs and interest of each pupil. While the selection of club s and classes builds ability to make wise decisions, activities develop leadership qualities. Three courses are o ffe r e d Drewry M a s o n students: commercial, vocational and academic. To graduate in any of these a student must have eighte e n Carnegie Mr. Pilson installs '57-'58 S. C. They keep it in good operating condition for use invarious class rooms to broaden the students' ideas about customs and conditions around the world, and their knowledge of scientific findings. Principal Pilson and senior, David Minton, compete in Z1 with Mr. Robert Lewis as MC. This entertaining Assembly Program was sponsored by - The Scroll, to interest each student in subscribing to the school newspaper for this year. Former players discuss the '58 Basketball s e a s on with Coach Levi. This g r oup is representative of the fine boy's team which made Alma Mater almost win State basket- ball Championship at VPI in March 1957. AND AS YEARS GO BY.. .ff 5 1 x Q1 ,, f Larry and Laverne are tapped for Beta Membership ww .5 pp ,K N 1 f H '5 !if, 'Bw cw' 2 N Homeroom Representatives Ralph, Mary Frances, Samuel, Sally Lou, Carl and Lucille. NONE WILL FGRSAKE THEE V David stops to instruct the visiting 7th grade on Orientation Day. From the days of the 8th grade Orientation Pro grams, students dream of Beta Club tapping and the wearing of the traditional black cap and gown for boys and the white one for the girls. The five years between drag sometime but as they look into the future, these years seem to have flown by- -for it seems only a short while since the seniors were 8th graders trying to find Room 12 or the Library. TO MRS. MAGGIE DAVIS and MISS EVELYN WOOD for their helpfulness to all seniors for their patience with all seniors 15? Miss Evelyn Wood Mrs. Maggie Davis English IV Government 16 for their loyal devotion to our ALMA MATER for their just being themselves to all seniors in Government and English dl . Yak N J J' -0 :J Mrs. Maggie Davis Mrs. Maggie Davis, a nativ e of nearby Patrick County, taught for several years before she went to work at Du Pont. Later, after her marriage to Mr. .Tack Davis, she began teach- ing at Spencer-Penn High School. When that school was consolidated in 1952, Mrs. Davis helped organize the fi r s t year at D.M.H.S. Few teachers, if any can boast as many words per minute as Mrs. Davis can. Many a local, state o r national question fimportant o r notl has been settled in the discussions in her room! An active patriotic citizenherself, Mrs. Davis urges the .1 unior s in U. S. History and the seniors in government to put into practice the ideas and ideals le a r ne d in h e r classes in Room 58. I., ..,. . -x , in Miss Evelyn Wood Miss Evelyn Wood, a native of Floyd, taught at Axton High School and came with others of the faculty to help make up the first faculty at Drewry Mason in 1952. Senior English and Room ffl would certainly not seem the same without Miss Wood. She maintains an interest in her pupils even after graduation and school alumni visiting the old school enjoy dropping in on he r to discuss Macbeth or Research Themes. They soon ask, How's Miss Whitlock ? ,for one s eld om sees Miss Wood out of class without seeing Miss Whit- lock, for they are always together. MASTERS CF O.E. Pilson Principal Mrs. Yarbrough, our secretary for the past five years, has proven herself in- dispensable to D.M.H.S.. Compiling the absentee list, w ritin g receipts, making announcements, answering the telephone, delivering messages, po s t ing the thirty treasures' reports, and typing letters for Mr. Pilson, fill her normal days. When Exam time comes, she types and mimeo- graphs many of those fatal documents! ADMINISTRATION DUTIES FILL THEIR DAYS Principal Pilson, throughout his sixyears at Drewry Mason has devoted all of his time and energy in service to DMH. It is ha rd to believe that any one person can successfully manage all of the principal's duties, and still be interested in the students themselves, but Mr. Pilson does it. Some of the odd jobs Mr. Pilson do e s are: sweeping floors, painting the gym floor, and building on the football bleachers. But Mr. Pil- son always has time for associating with students and teachers, for he maybe seen talking with the students and listening to teachers. We all know he is always around, but no matter how busy he is, he is still interested in each one of us. Mrs. Virginia L. Yarbrough Secretary IV' ,,,,...-I.--o-v'f ' ix Mr. Lewis, assistant principal, questions pupils about their absence from school, and signs admission slips. He also checks excuses offered for absences and reminds everyone of the importance of a good attendance record. As we look back on Drewry Mason it is to Seniors, like a lake. As Freshmen we were only a small pebble in this great lake. But with each successive year We grew in knowledge and the pebble became a stone making countless ripples in the lake. Starting our Senior year, we made our firstbig ripple by electing class officersi One ripple after another was formed as we received our Class Rings, collected The Mayonnaise Fund, attended the Homecoming Dance and worked on our Play ln Old Virginny ., December brought th e Snowball Dance and the ordering of our very own announcement cards. Measuring for our caps and gowns, attending the Junior-Senioi Prom and participating in the Senior Class Day brought us closer to our goal--the largest, most wonderful ripple of all - graduation. Recalling all these precious moment s , Seniors realize they form a big beautiful lake of memories, which we will have with us for the rest of our lives. 30 .Af K V fi .,,. f A ,-I 'Km . I I ix, .. Who is the best speller ? Kitty Koger, Elaine Koogler, Miss Huddle, Sponsor. -1 V It .wr Some of this was due to the fact that everyone in the speech class participated as part of the activities ofthat class. Through participation in these contests, students learn the fundamentals of speaking in pub- lic. They learn how to be poised and graceful under the hardest of circumstances. They improve their diction 'and enunciation, and learn to confine them- selves to a time limit. The debators learned to do re- search, and to argue or disagree Without antagonism. Work on the play develops co-operation between cast and stage crew. Though everyone didn't win, all who took part in the events had fun , and gained valuable experience. It enriches those who r e c e ive, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts'forever. None of us is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the we a r y , cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and is nature's best antidote for trouble. Yet, it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to any- one until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give a smile. Give them one of you.rs,as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give. We believe you, the Class of 1958, will smile your way to success and happiness. NKARTINS VILLE NYLON PLANT E.l.
