It is worthy of mention that the club furnishes officers for most of our clubs: Thomas Cox, Vice President of the Senior Classg Carroll O'De1l, Pre sident of the F.B,L,A.g Judy Tatum, Captain of c he e r l e a de r s g Margaret Shropshire, President of the Student Bodyg Jean Moore, editor of the Spartaniang Janet McDonaldg captain of Safety Patrolg Patricia Jones, President of the Tri-Hi-Yg and Dale Clifton, President of the Spanish Club. The entire student body participated in our White Christmas Program and made it possible for us to help needy families in our area. The State Convention held in Richmond again this year, was of particular concern to us because we nominated a candidate for State Beta President - Jeanette Mitchell. First, a big hearty b reakfa s t of copy, typed on white, leafy copy paper. This copy is di- gested and organized by the makeup team of our journalism class. A snack of pictures is processed by the engraving room, and then e ve rything goes to be printed. After printing, the papers are folded by student staff members, All this is paid for by selling the newspaper, with profits from the concession stand run by the students and Mr. Lewis, at all athletic games. To prove our state- ment we ask you, our reader, to look closely at the grandstand for the football field, where we had practical experience in zmeasuring, and cutting lumber fo r the seats. Below this, you will see the football field where we sowed grass and helped install an ir rigation system. This do-it-yourself' experience with our learning by judging cattle at the local farms around us as well as fo re s try judging, help us to live up to our club motto Learning by Doing . Our club promised to raise seventy-five dollars for the football field fund. To do this, we suppo rt the plans for good business courses in the schools of Hen ry County. Our club programs have been planned with the above in mind. Speakers from the everyday business wo rld were brought to club meeting to create an interest in future business careers for our F.B.L.A. members. PREPARING FOR SPRING FESTIVAL Forensic activities are the major interest of many of ou r stude nt s during the months of February and March. Many hours of ha rd work are put into each student' s entry. Those who entered poetry or prose readings found themselves with the task of s e le c ting their readings, cutting them down to a four minute time limit, and p ra c ticing diction and enunciation as well as other mechanics of good reading. The entrants for public speaking had to select their topics, gather information, and write, rewrite, and write again until their s pe e che s were as good as they could make them. The debators faced the problem of gathering information and preparing speeches which would put across their points forcefully, but with out antagonism. They needed to familiarize the m s e lve s with the subject matter until they we re able to answer all rebuttal questions. The cast and the people behind the scenes in the one - a c t play had the work of learning line s, the sometimes drudgery of rehearsal, and the silly feeling of being in make-up for the first time. Although of course everyone did not win in his pa rtic ula r field, the experience gained in Forensic events was invaluable. 82 Left to Right, First Row: Billy Wood, Kennon Barnes, Carole Minter, Patsy Craddock. Our long hours or practice we re forgotten as we thrilled to sing over radio stations WMVA and WHEE or sang for the diffe rent churches and the P.T.A.'s where we were invited. The plans to participate in the All West Chorus kept us hard at work. Planning to attend the Roanoke Syrnpnony Orchestra was almost as muc h fun as going. We gave an assemrnly program to raise money for the Football Field Fund. Our two concerts - one at Christmas and one in the spring - gave us an opportunity to sing the different types of music we have worked on. Often, they roused our s chool spirit by performing at half tirne during the football games and during pep rallies. With the majorettes, a Pep Band composed of a small group of band members, has helped in cheering the Spartan teams during the basketball games. The Band has playe d during as- sembly programs and pre sented a program to ra i s e money for our contribution to the football field fund. LIBRARY CLUB COLLECTS BCOKS AND FINES Each English class has a representative in the Library Club. Duties of this representative are to remind members of the class of over-due books and fines, encourage students to take care of books, make book reports, give information about new books, put up exhibits, and help at the circulation desk when the class comes to the library. Joan Flanagan Cox, Susan Collins, Phyllis Sha rpe , Norma Scott, Rebecca Mills, Texas Crews, and Agnes Moore are library a s s i s tant s and will receive a pin at the end of the year for 140 hours of satisfactory service. The club celebrated Book'Week by putting up special e xhibit s in all English classrooms and in the library. The twenty three members of the club atte nde d the meeting of the Henry County Library Association at Bassett and visited other lib ra r ie s. An assembly program in the spring and a program for a P.T.A. meeting helped pupils and parents know and understand the problems and purposes of the library. 86 The members of the Spanish Club have be en very busy this year helping others as well as ourselves, We recall the many things that we did in 1956-57. We had a Halloween Party and gave two- thirds of the proceeds to the Football Field Fund , an amount of Sl03.33. We served dinner to the Spencer Ruritan Club. We bought a re c o rd playe r for the club's use and to be of use to others. A Spanish fiesta in the spring, entertained Spanish C lub s from other schools, our parents, and fellow students interested in taking Spanish. Our overall aim for 1956-57, was to try to ge t mo re students really interested in the joy of taking Spanish. The F in the name of our club, represents the Future, which be- longs to the youth and is full of hope , opportunity, and promise. The T stands for Teachers, who are the builders of civilization. The A stands for America, the home of the Future and of the Teachers. The F.T.A. served a dinner for the Touchdown Club and the football team on November 26, 1956. The money from this dinner went to the fund for the football field. In operation since January, 1957, it 'is a large club - its membership not being limite d by age or grade classification. This club has as its principal object to create, maintain, and extend Christian principles throughout the school and community. The Tri-Hi-Y plans to pe rfo rm a number of services which we believe will be helpful in the school such as having devotionals over the P.A. sy s tem each morning, One activity being conside red is the helping of a ne e dy family who is not now looked after by some other agency. In the following years the club hopes that its activities will appeal to more and more students. Upfront during a meeting are: Front Row - Alma Burgess, Onita Martin.
