E. Pilson, A.B., M.Ed. Georgetown College Duke University University of Virginia Since the principal's office is more or le s s the heart of all school activities, it is necessary to have a capable assistant to keep things running smoothly. Upon the shoulders of Mrs. Virginia R. Yarbrough rests the responsibility of keeping track of all school finances in addition to the tele- phone calls and the multitude of requests she must answer each day. Here she is shown using the New Gestetner to run off Exams, Tests or Memor andum to the faculty. , ... Q:,i,,,:9-- ' PRINCIPAL Om' principal is always understanding with the welfare of the students and patrons in mind. He is never too busy to stop and lis- ten to faculty, patron, or student. The hours he spends at school are many more than a-40-hour-week and he does not mind any job from janitorial s er vic e to platform speaking, so long as it is for the good of D. M. H. S. if PUPIL ACCOUNTING All but a few of us--those who have never missed a day have Moments to Remember standing in line to get our ab- sence excused. How we do remember trying to convince Mr. Lewis that we just couldn't come to school! When a bus came in late, the rush was to the other office, to get your names re- moved from the absentee list which Mrs. Yarbrough was about to type. Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Yarbrough adjust the daily absentee list. Assistant Principal Robert C. The four principle officers are elected by vote of the student body. This year the council planned for: 1. Delegates to attend the four-day summer workshop held in Harrisonburg in July, 1955. 2. Entertaining the Danville District S.C.A.Annual Convention, at D.M.H. on November 17, 1955. 3. Sponsoring the March of Dimes and Junior Red Cross Drives at school. 4. Making money, not one of the main objec- tives, is necessary to defray the incidental ex- penses of the club, such as sending members to Richmond for the State Convention in March. The only means the club has of raising money is the operation of the school supply store, each member assumes his or her individual responsi- bility for opening the store, before and after school, and at the end of each lunch hour, on a regular schedule. Through the co-operation of the entire student body, the White Christmas Program sponsored by the club, was very suc- cessful. Large baskets were sent to three needy families in our school community. Fresh fruit, canned food, toys, and clothing, were turned over to the local chapter of Christmas Cheer for distribution to others throughout the county. Beta Club contributes substantially to other causes, such as the March of Dimes and the National Beta Educational Fund. We are espec- ially interested in the latter, because several for - mer members have made use of this Fund to go to college. On each morningof the three day mid-term Exam-period, Pansy Spencer, Douglas Lawrence, and B obby Wood, spoke on various aspects of honesty , to the entire school, over the P.A. System. The Drewry Mason Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America is made up of girls who have taken or are taking Home Economics. Our girls are learning to live better today so that our lives and those of our families will be better tomorrow. To improve their club and their home, the members work toward degrees of achievement. These are awarded to those girls who have attained certain qualities set up by the National Or- ganization. There are two degrees obtained in the high school chapter - the Junior Homemaker Degree and the Chapter Degree. For the first time in the history of the club twelve girls re- ceived their Junior Homemaker Degrees in an assembly program, where they were presented a key, the symbol of this degree, Myrian Barnes, Shelby Via, Mona Kendall, Ann Joyce, Virginia Guthrie, Elaine Knight, Glenda Roach, Arlene Wells, Bobbie Sue Wilson, and Edna Wilson. To improve the community the girls painted the family mailboxes, aided a needy family, and participated in the World Christmas Festival. Rose bushes were donated for the school yard. As school projects, a winter fashion show was given as an assembly program. A sewing shop was equipped to meet all emergencies among the faculty and the students. The club participated in the Axton and Danville Fairs, bought U N E S C O Stamps and sent Care packages. Some of the programs for the inter esting meetings were, fly Mr. Mueller, an exchange teacher from Germany, talking on the family life in Germany, 121 arrangement of spring flowers. Although many projects were completed, we do not n e gl ect fun. Bake sales were held, a Mother -Daughter Banquet, a picnic with the F.F.A. Chapter and six girls attended the F.F.A. - F.H.A. summer camp near Smithfield, Virginia. T7 3 I The Future Farmers of America, a National organiza- tion for farm boys in school, has a definite place in Drewry Mason High School. Besides receiving practical training in the latest and best practices for farm jobs, and rendering a community ser vic e in reforestation, fire fighting, pruning orchards and landscaping, the boys receive a most valuable training in citizenship. From their organizational ritual and their meetings, they learn to preside, take part in discussions and to handle at least twenty-five parliamentary situations. Their partici- pation in public speaking contests gives them valuable ex- perience and their dairy, live s toc k, forestry, and Degree Team contests give them good training and teaches them to mingle with others, to be good losers, as well as good win- ners. These contests begin in the local school, continue through the Fairystone Federation and on to the District and State contests. To raise m oney for chapter activities the F.F.A. boys sold 120 fruit cakes. The members of the c lub plan to sell advertisements for a calendar as a money-raising project. The chapter contributed S20 to the Fairystone Federa- tion in order that a member of the Federation could attend the National F.F.A. Convention in Kansas City. FUTURE FARMERS AMERICA Mr. Vipperman, Wayne Cox, Mr. Tavenner plan for contest. Members of the chapter are raislngfive pure-bred dairy helfer calves which were donated by leading dair ym e n in Henry County. These boys become owners of the calves but give back to the chapter the first heifer calf, to be given to another boy. A herford, pure-bred, registered bull was placed in the hands of Stuart Martin for the use of improving the breed of cattle of the chapter. The bull was donated by Sears Roebuck K: Company. The chapter members will continue helping to improve the schoolgrounds by planting shrubs and flowers and by do- ing simple landscaping. The chapter also cooperates with the Governor of Vir- ginia's Plant More Trees Program by planting trees on their own and neighbor's farms for re-forestation. The social high-light of the year is a Federation Banquet in the spring. OFFICERS President, Wayne Cox, Vice-President, J. C. This is what Cecil Martin, president and student director of Band, has been doing lately. The band, this year, has a membership of twenty-six. We were proud to have been able to mar ch and play for the home football games. The majorettes, with Drum Major Dale Powell, marched as a new and added attraction. This is the firstyear the band and majorettes have parti- cipated. The band has held several performances, playing for the District F.F.A. Banquet spon- sored by the Moose Club of Martinsville and Henry County, sharing in a music concert with the Chorus and performing for two elementary schools. Our band is under the very able direction of Mr. Oscar H. Munch, Jr. Mr. Munch heads the entire music department at our school. He also teaches band in the elementary schools of Ridge- way and South Martinsville, in order that they may join the 8th grade band, as soon as possible, after entering Drewry Mason. Members of the band feel that music is more than self-expression, that it is an universal language. For this reason, we try to stimulate interests in different types of music. A jazz band, which has proved to be quite popular, was formed by several members of the band, with the help of Mr. Munch. This group included Betty Mor r is , Cecil Martin, Tommy Palmer, Billy Pearman, and Mr. Munch. They have played acceptably for several dances, The Homecoming Dance, The Senior Snowball Dance, and for other school functions. The Library Club's principal aim is to help the library serve the school more effectively. The club is made up of three types of members--regular as sis tants , home -room represent- atives, and general assistants. Regular library assistants ar e required to work 140 periods during the school year. They work at the desk, help keep the library attractive, type and file cards, take care of vertical file and magazines, and keep records. They are presented apin as a symbol of satisfactory service ata public recognition service. The following received two year service pins: Marie Knight, Martha Martin, Fern Hoyle, Edna Wilson, Virginia Guthrie, and Frances Steele. Those receiving fir st year pins were: Mildred Agee, and Evelyn Burgess. Each home-room has alibrary representative who notifies pupils of overdue books, collects fines, and encourages pupils to use the library wisely. Knowing that we would have a team, we tried to get support by selllng tickets ln advance and making contacts of all kind to advertise the games. We have started renting cushions at all home games, both basketball and baseball. The most lmportant project in 55-56 is to put a permanent back-stop on the baseball field. We expect lt to be a two- year project. Also, Monogram members helped make seats for football and baseball spectators. As the 19 5 5 football season approached, Drewry Mason fans were eagerly waiting to see for the O N E G R I N first time their own football team. Although the record of the team was not impressive in the won and lost department the team showed great spirit and Coaches Ed Jones and 5, Eddie Levi were pleased with the improvement and progress of the squad. All of the games on the Spartan's schedule were with teams that had previous experience in football. All in all this year, the Spartans won 2, tied 1, and lost 4. The team made a good showing in all of its games as three of the four games lostwere lost by 6 points -+1 or less. The high point of the Spar- '- tan's season was a 22 - 12 victory over Pembroke, which gave the Spartans their first District victory. The S p a r ta n s will suffer the loss of 9 Seniors from this year's squad. They are: J.C. Martin, Lowell Mcliaughn, Or rin Clifton, S c o tt White, Claude Doyle, Jimmy Coach Ed Jones and the Senior Doyle, Dick Smith, Doug Rea and M ember s of the squad discussing Richard Mays. football strategy. Alth ough most of these boys w e r e fir st team ball players and will be missed, 21 members of this year' s squad will return and prospects for next year are bright. The first football team proved itself to be a credit to the school for the team showed great sportsman- ship and team -spirit in each game, surprising many spectators, who were delighted with the games. Martin, Eugene Eanes. ON THE COURT The Spartans have done it. Beat Martinsville, has been the main battle-cry of D.M. stu- dents since 1952. Martinsville had been the only team on the schedule which Drewry Mason had been unable to defeat. On December 17, 1955, the regulation playing time ran out, with the score tied. In the three-minute overtime play, Drewry Mason won 69-68, with Clyde Barbour scoring the winning point. J.C. Martin, one of the top scoring players in District 6, has been a great aid to Drewry Mason. At the time this book goes to press, his average per game is 27.7. Many of Drewry Mason's points have come from Eugene Eanes' rebounds. The fine defensive playing of Orrin Clifton helped save the game against Galax. Orrin will be greatly missed by the team next year. New to this year's team is Clifton Campbell. His defensive playing has been outstanding and he is one of the best prospects for another year. Clyde Barbour is good at both offensive and defensive playing. When the going is rough, Clyde is in there fighting. The average height of these five boys is 6 ft. 2 in. They have been well supported by the other members of the squad. Under the careful and thorough guidance of Coach Eddie Levi, the Spartans have had their best year ln basketball --- 15 victories out of 16 games played, as this book goes to press. ON THE COURT Coach Doris Underwood Jennings has come up with a hard-working team, despite inex- perience on the part of the majority of the squad. Of the fourteen squad members, only five have had previous varsity experience,Joanne Diuguid, Martha Richardson, Betty Morris, Shirley B. Holland and Betty Jean Dalton. The girls, showing team spirit have encountered the difficulties of illness, Ceven appendicltls operations on the coach and one forward at mid seasonj. Transportation difficulties for after- noon practice and the disadvantage of the lack of height in our forwards. These facts have been considered as obstacles, which the team was challenged to overcome. Although their record in the won and lost column was not equal to that of other teams ln District VI, several of the games were lost by very narrow margins.
