We feel that in choosing the recipient ot this honor, We have selected one of Dreher's most devoted teachers. She has given us rnuch of her time and her talents. We love her tor her indi- vidualism, her spirit, and her untiring energy. To Miss Moselle Skinner we say thank you. Fo r her un- selfishness, inspiration, and exceptional ability, we, the stall, affectionately dedicate our annual. MA Principal l9BO opens a new decade and also marks the beginning ot a new era in our newly appointed administration. With the opening ot a new high school in the city, many posi- tions in our administration were left to be filled by our taculty. Mr. Whittinghill was promoted from assistant principal to prin- cipal, and Mrs. Woodrutt and Mr. Branch were appointed assistant principals. Cur able faculty, headed by Mr. Whitting- hill, Mrs. Woodrutt, and Mr. Branch, has guided Dreher to high achievements in edu- cation. Even the best student body would be lost without expert leadership, and we at Dreher are most fortunate in having the wis- dom and kindness shown us by the 1960 Dreher faculty. MR, ARLIE W. WHITTINGHILL MB. C. W. BRANCH MBS. RUTH H. WOCDDBUFF Assistant Principal Assistant Principal MRS. LYNN HARRISON Secretary MRS. MYRTIS L. VINSON Secretary ISTR TIN Why does the BLUE DEVIL always display a picture ot Mr. Guy L. Varn, superintendent of Columbia City Schools? lt is not only loe- cause We respect the position that he holds, but also because We admire very much the qualities that Mr. Varn has shown over the years that have endeared him to us. The Dreher High School chapter of the National Honor Society is composed of students whose records of scholarship, leadership, character, and service have set them apart from the student body as a whole. To be considered for membership in the National Honor Society, one must have maintained a B avere age for the two semesters preceding his candidacy. One must have participated in enough extra-curricular activities to show qualities of leadership, character, and service. The National Honor Society sponsors many projects at Dreher. The new lobby furniture, the scholarship fund, the student-tutoring service, the student directory, class rings, decal sales, and the senior trip are ali services of this society. The importance of Honor Society is well-known and its influence is far-reaching. Dreher High School justly owes this active organization its highest tribute. SPONSORS. The visitor would wonder how such an une coordinated group could ever edit anything. There were distractions at every turn, At almost every crucial point someone was bound to break the train oi thought by asking for your algebra book. We had callers ot every description constantly flowing in and out. Our visitor might possibly denounce the start as hysterical we were. There was always something to laugh at. Omnipresent were Billy's dry humor, Iohn E.'s dic- tation, Meredith's noisy apples, Lucy's cradle-crushes, and Eay's shorthand. ln spite ot Carolyn's crying con- tact lenses, Kathy's continually typing the statts home- work, Dick Schwab's majoring in pharmacy, Bruces absence, and the two understudies, Carol and lohn B., our group did work. lt our guest were observant, he would sense the dedication to purpose a small but ever-present under- current. The write-ups and telephone calls, the necese sary ground work, were done quietly and on time. Classes Editor Newspaper Job One of the Hardest at Dreher Where's my head? Where's my head? The cry goes up at about 5:00 P. M. on Deadline Day. The page editor yelling these words doesn't mean them literally: he's just misplaced a headline. The Blue Print makes it to press again by the skin cf its teeth, and the staff vows- -never again. But some- how, the next Monday, they start over on a new issue. The newspaper is perhaps one of the hardest jobs at Dreher, with working hours ranging from 8:00 A. M. until 7:00 P. M. But the satisfaction of seeing their high- est efforts actually in print makes the staff feel a sense cf real accomplishment. Yes, life in the Press Box is one hilarious but re- warding routine. A staff worker hasn't really lived until he has gulped down a watery coke while trying to type an article, take a picture, and lay-out a page all at the same time! Why all the rush? This copy has to get to press, you heard left say that next dead- line is tomorrow!!! Putting all joking aside, the Blue Print is our one opportunity to take our pen in hand and to portray the spirit of Dreher, whether it is a story of success, defeat, or perhaps a fond dream or ambition. This year the Blue Print underwent a good many changes, lt switched printers, changed from newsprint to slick paper, and actually, for once, had no financial problems. For the first time, no voluntary subscriptions were sold, and the cost of the paper was included in the general school fees. The Press Box closes for another year now, but next fall it will again resound with the anguished shouts of Where's my head? Where's my head? LITERARY STAFF. Dreher Band Glamorized By The Dreher High School Band under the direction of Mr LaVern Hahn has been a great spirit lifter this year . Not only did the band give excellent performances at assemblies and pep rallies, but also gave superb half! time shows at football games. A new addition, major- ettes, was a real highlight. Solo twirlers were Agnes and Sally Pritchard. Band captain was lohn Lupold. The band received high ratings at the District and State Music Festivals which are sponsored each year by the South Carolina Music Educators Association: they also gave a number of concerts and entered several marchingfband contests. Annually the band participates in the Sun-Fun Festival at Myrtle Beach, sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce. As one of the outstanding bands of South Carolina, pictures of the band and its first chair players are entered in the First Chair of America Book, which features the best bands from all over the United States. With this headline and a score of 26-7, thus ended the triumphant road to an undefeated and untied football season. The Devils began with an inexperienced collection of eager young men. However, the coaching genius and hard-shell discipline of Coaches Stuart and Robin- son molded the team into a well-knit, all-powerful juggernaut. Although the Big Blue rolled to twelve decisive vice tories, the team was relegated to third place in the rating poll of high schools. ll0 Dreher placed two men on the Shrine Bowl team and six men in the allsarea selections. A Dreher man wort the Thom McAn award, and was selected lineman of the year. A Blue Devil was also co-captain oi the Shrine Bowl team. Thanks for the successful season are due to the Booster Club for its cooperation, and to the entire stu- dent body for its loyalty and support. Our Devils were an honor to Dreher this year of 1959- 60, and stand as symbols of the indomitable spirit of Dreher High School. CHARLES A. STUART I. K. STATE UAAAH RUNNERS-UP HERB ROBINSON IOHN COLEMAN PETE LEVENTIS Coach Captain Manager The Blue Devils of the hardwood court stood as the best anywhere in the eyes of their loyal student body. They won the City Tournamentg they won the Lower State AAA Tournamentg and they took runner-up in the finals of the State AAA Tournament after being defeated by the magnificent performance of a fine Anderson team. However, greatness is not always measured by the victory. Our Devils brought us pride and honor through their never-dying desire to wiit, their team sportsmanship, and their invincible courage. Our boys came a long way to achieve the record of seventeen wins and eight losses. The coaching was with them every dribble of the way, and stood by them as proudly in defeat as in victory. Mr. Herb Robinson in his first year as head coach of the Blue Devils, well deserves our sincere appreciation. figvwffr mmf, su ,gs 4- Q Q W 2 '13 W W My in Mifgmizfgezg wif. .I ii . ,ima 1 'WI' 'FU 1' A52!gPL.3 ' A' Qggggj 1 'I A -3: M .:. The llGreat Spirit Returns At the beginning of the summer the newly elected Kings and Queens of Scream began what was to bee come the Search for the Great Spirit. The main idea behind all the work done by those idiots was the return of the driving force of school spirit. And the Great Spirit did returnf as was witnessed by the Knights of Other Schools when they were defeated on the Field of Honor by the Blue Knight all dramatized in the Homecoming skit. We will keep sweet memories of Longs Follies, Cheerful Charlie, TwofCard Draw, and Ed, be careful or you'll fall off the goal post. HENRY Coach BASEBALL Blasting their way through the rugged tests, the Blue Devils once again upheld the standard of victory that is Dreher. The powerful Devils conquered foe upon foe and not until the seasons end did they meet defeat. ln only two contests was the Blue beaten, while amassing nine sweet victories. Coached by the crafty veteran of the game, Mr. l. K. Henry, Dreher's nine of the diamond was one of which we could be proud. The year l96O holds a glowing promise of greater heights as the new Devils take the field. FRONT HOW: William Ouzts, Austin Boyd, Mac Ogburn, lohn Coleman, lack McCathern, Ted Petoskey.
