BLUE DEY7IL :- QZZQA5 PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENT BODY DREHER HIGH SCHOOL COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA Volume XIII CLASSES 22 ACTIVITIES so T A B L E 0 F C 0 N T E N T S ATHLETICS S 98 BEAUTIES 120 M? What is a school but the people in it? What does it feel, locked up and alone In the night? ' Does it dream, as the old do, of past Triumphs and glories? Or does it yearn, as we do, for a future Bright and marvelous? Who can feel the heart of a school Except by touching the hearts of its people, For ' What is a school but the people in it? NEG We, the editors of your 1959 BLUE DEVIL, have attempted in the following pages to depict, through pictures, the pulse of a great school, to determine what factors mold fourteen hundred individuals into one homogeneous unit, to recreate a year of assorted hopes and fears, dreams and realities, successes and failures, teaching and learning. What makes a school great? Keep the supposition in mind and join the editors as, through retrospect, we view -Dreher '59 HER PEOPLE. .. represent the very essence of her being, and character. Each individual possesses his own distinctive personality, his own myriad ideas, his own selfish desires. Coupled with the individualistic qualities, which must be judiciously guarded, each Dreherite is instilled with and motivated by a certain unseen, yet deep-seated harmony, which binds and holds each as a vibrant, working unit. This basic factor, this common bond between her people, is the mutual love and respect held for Dreher by every Dreherite. .ID 1. V Al vw VN aft jig, .W QFQQE HER CAM US... is to every Dreherite more than merely a container for the countless activities, both curricular and extra-curricular. A score of years is recorded in the growth of our educational plant, from that old wingi' corridor, which was the Dreher High School of two decades past, to the present day building. An extensive library, vast athletic facilities, modern classrooms and science laboratories, spacious auditorium, beautiful courtyard, and the distinction of operating the only inde- pendent, closed circuit television station in South Carolina are Dreher's, and all contribute to her being acclaimed one of the finest and most noteworthy institutions in the Southeastern United States. 1 M.. The production of responsible, well-rounded, educated individuals-ready to brave the chal- lenges of an uncertain world as progressive citizens-is her sole purpose. '1'owNIrs. Turney-High, an outstanding exam- ple of the spirit of teaching, we, the staff, dedi- cate the 1959 BLUE DEVIL. She is known throughout the state for her teaching ability and her achievements, hut to us she means much more. Her interest in every student as an individual, her unbounded en- thusiasm, and her delightful charm make her an inspiration to all. She radiates a great love for the French, their culture. and their language to each of her stu- dents. Because of her uincompromising devo- tion to academic perfection, she represents the highest standards and ideals a school may hope to attain. Merci beaueoup, Muflame Turney-High! Ui ,M ' 1 fv .. MR. I. K. BLUBI Principal And with him must go his main support, the one who has always stood by him, worked for him, and planned with him the important events which affect each of us. Known throughout the state for her abilities as dean of girls, she has given much of herself to lift high the name of Dreher. NVith mixed emotions of sadness and gratitude, we bid our goodbyes to Mr. Blum and Miss Sease. XVe, the students of Dreher High School, wish them good fortune and Godis blessing. How we shall miss him, our 'cPapa Blumlu How lonely thc halls and how empty our hearts at this parting. XVhere will we go to find another who looks always toward our future, but retains the best of what is in our past? To him we are not just faces, he knows us as individuals, as persons. His every action is for our best interest, and for the best interest of our school. No matter where he may go, our hearts will follow him, for Dreher is his, and he is Dreher,s. These Inemories are not onlv comprised of the innumerable periods spent in acquiring knowledge, but they sing with the remembraiices of basketball games lost and won, of dances and parties, of all the wonderful things that go to make up our vears at Dreher. Our senior class takes with it the best and the worst of what we have experienced. Vie leave behind goals which must be met bv succeeding classes. XVith our going, an old era closes, not only for us, but for Dreher. Next vear there will be a new administration and a new high school with which to compete. The former li- brary, modern dance classroom, and general activities room verily glistened with electronic television equipment and devices unfamiliar to the ordinary layman. Mr. C. Dewey Centry of Dreher Was named coordinator of the project, and many students have gained valuable Working experience in the management of the station. A momentous step in the modern American educational system, Dreher is indeed honored to he the first to house this experiment. Dreher High School always is looking toward the future. KEY CL B The Dreher Key Club has for many years distinguished itself as one of the leading youth organizations in the whole of this country. Having on several occasions won international recog- nition, the Dreher chapter of Key Club International has polled an impressive service record since its foundation. Heading the list of noteworthy services extended to school, student, and community is the Key Club Scholar- ship Foundation, which awards S250 aid to a deserving Dreher graduate each year. Highlights of the Key Club year are the International Award-XVinning Key Club Variety Show. light bulb sale, faculty basketball game. Coodfellows Christmas Cam- paign, Polio and Heart Fund drives and the United Fund Telethon. Active participation in district and international con- ventions has broadened the scope and vision of the individual Key Clubber and has extended and made known the name, Dreher High School, throughout the country. At least two district officers for each of the three years just past have been Dreher Key Club members and the Dreher Key Club has been mentioned for every dis- trict service award. Founded only a few years ago, the Key Club has been a sterling example of building better citizenship through service to mankind. DISTRICT OFFICERS. Nia. HAMIY HL'XTEIl l.i.orn Huxiuaicks, Diri- RIB. Seated: Carolyn Nelson, Mary Anne Easterling, Page Putnam, Dale Craig. Standing: Anna Long, Leigh Lehoelty Martie Faulk, Arthur Simons, Nancy Gheesling, Scottie Shelley, Judy Stone, johnny Tuller, jimmy Palmer. Much of the beautiful atmosphere encountered by a visitor to Dreher can be attributed to the efforts of the Art Council under the direction of Miss Moselle Skinner. The originals and the reproductions of famous masterpieces were pur- RT chased with funds raised by the annual Art Bazaar. Each art student has an opportunity to make a contribution toward the art appreciation of the entire Dreher student body. ix 1 'A 1. gr Miss NIOSELLE Sicrxxlin Art Instructor A '4- I . BASKETB LL This yearis Blue Devil squad has carved out a yvell-deserved place in the long hierarchy of outstanding Dreher basket- ball teams. Over the regular season, the red hot hoopsters suffered only one defeat while two-platooning their way to seven- teen victories. They won the city tourna- ment by defeating Columbia Hi, Olympia, and Eau Claire. In postseason play, the talented group captured the Lower State 'QAAAT championship, placed a close sec- ond in the State MAAAT, Tournament, and brought home an impressive overall record NIH.Aiu.liiXY.NVil1'1'iiNn.ili1.i. For such accomplishments the team has won the tribute of Dreher and the admiration of the state. The men who deserve credit for guiding the Blue Devils through such a highly profitable season are Coaches Arlie XVhit- tinghill and Herb Robinson. YVithout their expert and able direction the aggregation could never have compiled its record, nor could it have done so well in the tourna- ments.
