This annual is a travel log ol a journey around a truly special, enchanted world, that ol Dreher High School. The passengers were the fourteen hundred students and sixty teachers, the transporta- tion was our own train of thought and action, and the sights were both colorlul and memorable. The train started its journey' in September and ended in June, one hundred and eighty days ol learning and laughter. Within the realm ol our world there are many sights to be remembered which the lollowing pages will reveal as we re-travel our trip . . . AROUND OUR WORLD IN ONE HUNDRED . Doubt not your eye- sight or your sanity, for it's not a satellite orbiting about our halls, it's just Mr. Simpson scurrying to the aid of some teacher or stu- dent. You see, he's like that, always walking that extra mile-smiling that extra smile. Officially he is only a teacher and sponsor ofthe Snack Bar, but unotficially he's the Mr. Fixit and Dreher's most avid sport enthusiast -in short, a very wonderful man. If again you should see, and you will, a shiny dome and a pipe flashing down the halls, return his hello and be glad that he is a Dreherite. He profits most who serves best, and profit he has, lor Mr. Simpson has won the heart of Dreher High School. Mr. Charles T. Simpson As a teacher As a sponsor As a friend Mr. Guy L. Varn Superintendent It is easy to recognize you, Mr. Varn, as our stately and dignified superintendent, but it is your personal qualities which have won the recognition, respect, and admiration of your associates and students all over the city and state, qualities of innate honesty, in- tegrity, and fairness to all. Because these qualities are as much a part of you as your friendly smile and warm greeting, we want you to know, Mr. Varn, that we are proud there are people like you in the field of education. ADMINISTRATION As I sat in the assembly, I suddenly found myself viewing the figure now standing be- fore the podium. The deep baritone voice echoed across the large room as our speaker thoughtfully, simply, and forcefully advised us, his words IuII of wisdom and sincerity. Few men would we find in our educational careers so interested in the individual, his talents and his shortcomings. It was not un- usual to see this colorful personality walking down the hall humming the latest song hit, pausing between notes to greet a student with a witty comment or just a friendly hello. Suddenly the multitude of hands were ap- plauding this gentleman, and, as I joined in, one thought came to mind-here was a great man, here was our principal, Mr. Blum. Mr. .l. K. CLASSES SENIOR CLASS The lazy summer sun warmed our friendships as we, the Seniors, entered Dreher for our last year. Our first few months were spent in becoming accustomed to being seniors. After the initial excitement, we began our last tour of perhaps our most treasured world. Our athletes scored victories in honors and sportmanship, our scholars achieved rank and merit unparalleled by any other school, and each senior gave his every talent to hold high the dignity of Dreher. Within the scope of four years, we have traveled the road of honor, wounded pride, victory, friendship, and maturity. We've given our best and, in return, we have strengthened our faith in knowledge and our faith in friendship. Though now the doors of Dreher may close behind us, we, the seniors, have left a very large portion of our hearts within the halls of Dreher. OFFICERS PORTER KINARD . . ..... .... DICK ROCKAFELLOW DIANE COOK Editor Business Manager BLUE DEVIL Here I am, sitting in the corner where I always sit, just an old filing cabinet in which they cram all their secrets. The staff has had its glory, and now I, the silent key to their success, will reveal the many phases of my charming personality. ln my top drawer is found the space for the over- due write-ups and the 326 quotations which were selected. My second drawer is still recuperating from the shock of being quickly and violently slammed whenever a strange countenance entered the prem- ises. You see, within this drawer rested the prized efforts of the staff, the lay-outs and pictures. Be- neath the dust of the third drawer, the numerous yearbooks of the past presented a constant chal- lenge. Perhaps my most cherished drawer is the last in which is contained the fond memories of my cohorts, the staff of '58. The opening of this drawer lets loose the wild western calls ol Cheyenne Rockafellow, jarring the jangled nerves of all except our diplo- matic and dependable Ben. I shall never forget Shirley's inexhaustible originality of thought and ex- pression or Shields' consistently refreshing good humor and unlimited supply of creative ideas to which Barbara contributed with her too cluttered as she quietly struggled with the class pictures. From my keen observations I often wondered just how long they could have existed without versatile Bobby, Fortifying the group with lifesavers and chewing gum, MISS MARY RAMSEUR MISS EDNA WALKER MRS. The two strange voices I sometimes heard were those of Diane and Carlyle sneaking downstairs to find out about the latest brainchild and the price ol it. OI coures, I knew better than to worry about the money, for Miss Walker without any Iuss or show has always provided me the best of everything. Then there were those sunless days when Mrs. Wannamaker and Mr. McGraw met the deadline, even though the tennis team did shiver a bit in the snow. I think the Iondest memory ol all is that of my guardian, Miss Ramseur. There, a faithful handful of student-journalists work above and beyond the call of duty to bring Dreher its newspaper, the Blue Print. ln this room, dubbed the Press Box, tomorrow's citizens learn the principles of publishing a newspaper. Although Modern Dance is the newest of the fine arts at Dreher, it has become one of the most featured. For those interested, it means long afternoons and nights of practice for the modern dance concert, the excitement backstage before a successful performance, and the wonderful feeling of accomplishment afterwards. The experience of working together to produce these concerts is of genuine value in the development of creative expression and poise. DRAMATICS lt was the Christmas season, and the student body as- sembled in the auditorium to observe the holiday. A very hardworking and talented group of students combined ef- forts to produce again one of the loveliest and most inspir- ing programs of the year, The Nativity. Such productions given by the drama group not only afford enjoyment for the entire student body but also de- velop skills in the dramatic arts for those who participate. 92 T ROW: Robert Chestnut, Richard Ellis, Mal l Johnstone, Kathi Marti. BRANCH Co-ordinator ol Athletics RUPERT KUHNE Assistant Coach Manage Alter having lost a tine coach, Red Myers, and many members from last year's State Cham- pionship team, the football players at Dreher laced a most difficult assignment. This challenQ, heightened by the hardest schedule in Dreher's history, was tackled by a new coaching staff and a large group of inexperienced, but determined, athletes. Under the capable guidance of Coach TS Stuart and Coach Branch, the Devils overcame the obstacles and emerged at the end of the season State AAA Champions. The final record, ten wins and two losses, re- vealed the outstanding ability of Coach Stuart, who was elected the Coach ol the Year, and pro- duced many tine athletes and sportsmen for one of the greatest and the most deserving teams in Dreher's history. During regular-season play, the 'ihardwood-men compiled an imposing record of thirteen wins against only four defeats. They entered the Lower State AAA Tournament in Florence and advanced to the finals before being upset by the Eagles of Chicora High, Charleston. The boys proudly came home with the runner-up trophy as well as a fine over- all record of fifteen victories and six losses.
