Full of fears and void of knowledge, I entered my math curriculum as a student of Miss Callie. A silent hush fell upon the students as she stated the pur- pose of our new being-to learn. Equations, loga- rithms, Pythagorean theorem, tests, and more tests, all proved that I would learn or die trying. To spice the monotomy of learning, such say- ings as Big ears of corn don't grow back by the garden fence delivered to the not so successful student on the back row . . . the famous obliged to be . . . the notorious umph, that's too bad directed to the late-comer, the failure, or the gen- eral mischief maker, add to my delightful memories. Miss Callie, I can only say a very sincere thank-you for the unforgettable part you have played in my education. The Faculty, and I, the Student Body, feel and know that Dreher is a better place for your having been here. K. DEQXB-M X X5-5'-A ilu EXT, K,n.,f. SEN . , R . x . . .xnxx qi x. XXX. K. HENRY C. A. STUART Coordinator ol Athletics Assistant Coach FOOTBALL Although one of the lightest squads in Dreher's history, the 1956 football team was lcn o w n throughout the state for its spirit, hustle, and de- termination. With these qualities and the will to win, the team became one of the finest in the state. a Much ofthe team's success and recognition was due to the efforts of Coach Red Myers and his assistant, Charles Stuart. Coach Myers was hon- ored again this season by his selection as Class AA Coach of the Year in South Carolina. Dreher's laurels were not confined to coaching. One player, Henry Asbill, was chosen to play in the Shrine Bowl and was a member of the All- State team. Another, Lee Rhame, received praise through his selection as back of the year in South Carolina. After a victorious Thanksgiving Day finale, Dre- her emerged with a record of nine victories, one loss, and one tie. This fine showing merited Dre- her its highest honor of the year, that ol the state- wide class AA football champions. WHITTINGHILL Coach Basketball How about that, sports fans . . . we're number one again! Yes, although somewhat erratic at times, our '57 Blue Devils at last unveiled their talents at the state tournament. There, in its finest game of the season, Dreher toppled a strong Greenville team to become the State AA Champions lor the second straight year. Under the masterful guidance of Coach Arlie Whittinghill, the team has once again shown its worth on the hardwood. Dreher is losing six prominent seniors, but will have a host of promising young hoopsters on hand for next year. Our Blue Devils completed the season with an overall record of eleven victories and ten defeats. For volleyball, the association sponsored a play day for the senior and junior high schools of Columbia, and in basketball, one for the female devils and the Rock Hill High School play- ers. The girls' tennis team competed with those from Charleston, Florence, Hartsville, and Darlington. For the first time this year, the modern dance group performed in Asheville, N. C., at the Southern Convention of Health, Physical Education, and Recre- ation, went to Clemson College to perform at the Junior Follies, and attended a modern dance workshop at Winthrop College. Not only have the girls been taught the skill necessary to excel in these activities but also have acquired the spirit and willing- ness necessary for good sportsmanship.
