Let every flaming tongue enlcindle in ' Our minds the lamp ol knowledge, And in our hearts make manifest Thy guiding light ol understanding truth. The torch of service must be held As beacon to the multitudes Who call on thee to lead. And those who beg to see thee stumble 'Midst the tire ol competition Must never more than beggars be For all the trust reposed in thee Must never be dishonored. Extinguish not the softly glowing candle, Radiant with enchanting Ioveliness, Part of all thy dancing, whirling, Leaping brilliant light, illuminating night. And burn as bright lorever ln the school we love and honor, Thou the Spirit Flame ol Dreher. J. A. V. CONTENTS 'THE GUIDING LIGHT -FACULTY . . . THE LAMP OF KNOWLEDGE -CLASSES . Art Class Sketching ix si' 1 4-1 , Miss Mozelle Skinner Art Instructor msd' sau.: Art Bazaar Art Council ART The Art Department of Dreher, under the direction of Miss Moselle Skinner, has increased its activities and has grown from 29 to 150 pupils during the past decade. Expansion of facilities especially in the ceramics field, has made this greater interest and participation possible. The art students do many things besides learning to draw, such as designing programs and Dreher's Literary Yearbook, and beautifying the entrances with displays of sculpture. The Art Council is an organization which carries on many projects not actually related to creative work in art. It has played a large part in making Dreher 'Kart conscious as a school. Many beautiful paintings have been purchased through the efforts of Council, several of these were secured through funds made during the annual Christmas Bazaar, a Council-sponsored project. For several years it has offered a 550.00 purchase prize for the painting judged best in an annual display sponsored by the State Artist's Guild. PEECH The Dramatic Club is a student interest group that meets once each week at Activities Period. Programs are arranged so as to cover all phases ol the dramatics field. For public performance this year, the club presented, under the expert guidance of Mrs. Wood- ruff and Miss Kaminer, a one-act Christmas play entitled Dust of the Road lor an assembly program and a three act comedy, Time Out lor Ginger , as its contribution to the Fine Arts Festival. The National Forensic League has greatly expanded its activities during the past year. Under the capable direction of Miss Joyce Gayden and Mrs. Maude Simpson, the League has attended Con- gresses in North Carolina and South Carolina and sent debate teams to the district and state contests. The National Forensic League has made great strides in accomplishing its ur ose of P P developing the speaking ability of young people. The hustle and determination of the squad made up for their lack ol size and experience. Dreher placed one player in the Shrine bowl, several on All-State teams, four on the All-City Team and a host of players in the North-South game between Charleston and Columbia. Our own Red Myers was selected as head coach for the North team. With the close ofthe season on Thanksgiving Day the totals revealed four victories, two ties, and tive losses. It was the semi-final game with Spartanburg that really clinched the state title, however, and showed the spirit and fast determined play which characterized the Devils on the court. The final record ol twenty-one wins and four losses does not tell the lull story ol the team and the school spirit which followed it throughout the season. Under the direction of Coach Myers, the team went undefeated in state competition, took second place at the Duke-Durham Relays, and proved its superiority by setting five new records in winning the state meet. Louis Drake, Bill Latham, and Joe Smith, out- classed the previous records in the hall-mile, mile, and shot-put, respectively. Bury Hudson took first place in the low hurdles and tied the high hurdle record. Walt Hudson won both the 100 and 220 yard dashes.
