Our beloved principal . . . The man who has, for fhe pas? four years, carried before us flue lorch of rogress . . . We, fhe Senior Class of I937, do respecfliilly dedicafe +his, our Draperian. 13 J 4, 'il I ll l ff. THE PROGRESS OF DRAPER HIGH SCHOOL The lasT school disTricT formed in The Town oT RoTTerdam was organized in AugusT. I9OI. as DisTricT No. I4. The young disTricT conducTed school in a house on Guilderland Avenue unTil I904, when The legal voTers auThorized a new Two-room building To be locaTed on Guilderland Avenue. souTh oT Curry Road. The new building sTimulaTed growTh and in I909 Two addiTional class rooms were added. School opened in SepTember, I9IO, wiTh a pupil regisTraTion oT I64. The school prospered and I9I3 arrived wiTh a pupil regisTraTion oT 320. The voTers were again called TogeTher and The presenT building was sTarTed wiTh an eighT-room uniT on The presenT siTe. One Sunday morning in May, I9I4, The neighborhood was aroused by Tire in The old school. The Tire compleTely desTroyed The old sTrucTure. The enTire sTudenT body was TransTerred To The compleTed TirsT uniT oT The presenT building. The period oT The World War caused a rapid developmenT oT The disTricT, when I92O was reached, The voTers again auThorized an addiTion oT eighT rooms and The old audiTorium To accommodaTe The 539 pupils. The High School was esTablished AugusT I7, I92O. and The name Draper High School came inTo exisTence wiTh a TirsT year sTudenT body oT 68 pupils. June. I924, was a red leTTer monTh because The TirsT High School class oT 20 pupils was graduaTed. The crowded condiTions required a special meeTing oT The voTers again in I925. The building was enlarged by adding I4 rooms and The presenT AudiTorium-Gymnasium. Our High School had reached 4-O5 pupils wiTh 8I5 in The grades. This addiTion was crowded by I928 and The voTers relieved The siTuaTion by adding IO more rooms. Tacing Earl STreeT. To accommodaTe The approximaTely I4O0 pupils. The depression did noT slaclcen The growTh oT our school, buT made iT impossible To add more room: ThereTore, The basemenT was uTilized in I93l To care Tor The laboraTories, lcindergarTen. and one sTudy hall. During I932-I933 The T.E.R.A. devel- oped The old audiTorium inTo The presenT shop and domesTic arTs deparTmenT, which helped Temporarily To make room Tor our I8OO pupils. LasT year Tound us perplexed To know how To Tind seaTs Tor approximaTely 2,033 people. The voTers aT The May meeTing appoinTed a commiTTee To invesTigaTe The school condiTions. This commiTTee suggesTed The addiTion of 6 rooms and an AudiTorium. A meeTing of The legal voTers approved The recommendaTion oT The Board oT EducaTion and commiTTee on February 24, I937. Thus. again, a building proposiTion is under way. The STaTe DeparTmenT has informed us ThaT This addiTion is The lasT ThaT can be made To This building. We hope ThaT The school problem will be seTTled Tor The communiTy. whose people have so consisTenTly and loyally solved The problems of educaTion Tor Their children. The building growTh is imporTanT To care Tor The physical needs oT The sTudenT body. buT I believe The moral. spiriTual and educaTional developmenT oT The sTudenTs has Tar exceeded The maTerial expansion. A well-Trained TaculTy, wiTh a group oT happy sTudenTs, TogeTher wiTh a parTnership-ownership school aTTiTucle, develops The aTmos- phere Tor educaTional accomplishmenT. I EARL B. ZIMMER. A avliiwafwfff P5 KW Presenfing Mr. Howard E. Balcer, our assislanf principal. To him we are indebled for a slricl and efficienl enforce men? of lhe allendance rules of our school. lncidenfally, if is he who is largely responsible for our good behavior in flue halls and several of our classes. f,ccu l ml l - Xi PROGRESS OF THE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE The high school graduafe of I937 faces a more complex world Than any of his predecessors. Whefher he inTends To confinue his formal educafion or whefher he infends To go info indusfry. he has a more varied and possibly a more momenfous choice To make Than high school graduafes before him. Man occupafions formerly open To The high school graduafe now are open only To The college graduafe and many formerly open To The college graduaTe now require one or more years of graduafe sTudy. The boy or girl choosing college. Technical school, or business school musT choose his career four or more years in advance in order To reap The fullesf benefif of his educaTion. The graduafe wishing To commence his gainful occupafion immediafely has a difficulf choice To make. Too offen he Takes a job wiThouT considering The fuTure. Too offen he is forced To Take'The firsf one open because of economic necessify. ln order To live abundanfly a person musT develop as age and capacify for developmenf increase. Therefore iT is well To look for a posifion wiTh opporTuniTy for advancemenf so ThaT your life may be full as well as your pockefbook. There is a Tendency among humans To reduce life To habif. If This is done iT means ThaT a person has arbifrarily limifed The environmenf To which he is To reacT. and. Therefore. has shuT ouT The possibilify of furfher development This does noT mean ThaT The individual should noT acquire man habifs, b'-T iT does mean ThaT There musT be a sphere of acTiviTy. beyond The habifual. where There is a place for The furTher develop- menT of habifs. Colvin sa s: The difference befween The erson who confinues To make progress all Through his life. and The one whose real Iii is ended in early man- hood is ThaT The former always possesses an open mind and The aTTiTude of finding in his environmenf furfher possibilifies of adiusTrnenT. Therefore, leT us remember, when we choose a vocaTion. or an avocafion, or any form of recreafion. To choose Those acTiviTies which lead To furfher acTiviTies and noT Those ThaT keep us in a ruT. LeT us keep in mind ThaT real social progress depends on The progress of The individual as well as on new invenfions and new scienfific discoveries. HOWARD E. BAKER. THE DEANS MABEL A, BOWEN PAUL M. Q 12 OUR PERSONAL PROGRESS IN HIGH SCHOOL Try To look back a Tew years To The Time when we enTered Draper as Treshmen. Yes, we may well smile, Tor we did bear a marked resemblance To Those Timid creaTures who came inTo our group This year. We Tind iT hard To believe ThaT we. boisTerous and wise, old morTals ThaT we are now. could once have been so backward. so innocenT. and so modesT. Now, as we reflecT on The subiecT of our own advancemenT. we come To The realizaTion ThaT Tour years oT high school Training has had iTs indelible eTTecT upon us. We have been educaTed wiTh The TacTs abouT The world in which we live. We undersTand The TuncTioning of our government we can use, To The besT advanTage. our English language: we know someThing of The business meThods employed Today. We may well Take pride in being so TorTunaTe as To live in This modern age when men look forward and Train Themselves Tor a glorious TuTure! Draper. wiTh iTs many club and class acTiviTies, has given us The opporTuniTy To develop our special abiliTies. We have been Tossed inTo one large mixing bowl-our school-and sTirred unTil we are so closely relaTed ThaT everyone is an inTimaTe Triend oT each of his classmaTes. BuT This mixing bowl TreaTmenT has noT been Too hard on us, Tor even now we glow wiTh enThusiasm over our social developmenT. Dances. games. and enTerTainmenTs have aTTorded us opporTuniTies To ioin The crowd and share iTs pleasures. Four years ago. we were ToTal sTrangers To one anoTher. We came in small groups Trom This elemenTary school and ThaT. Today, we are an organized class-a class wiTh uniTy oT spiriT! ForTunaTely, ThaT unified spiriT has noT meanT unified characTer. Our characTers are alike only in ThaT They have been aTTecTed greaTly by Those of our classmaTes. ConsTanT associaTion wiTh varied Types of people has acquainTed us wiTh The ways QT The world and iTs inhabiTanTs. These relaTions wiTh oThers have also impressed upon and developed wiThin us The finer sTandards oT characTer. The Tireless eTTorTs oT our Teachers have embodied wiThin us such desirable TraiTs as responsibiliTy, eTTiciency, and iniTiaTive. WiTh This record OT progress behind us. we may conTidenTly look 'forward To new and beTTer living in The TuTure Tor which we have been so carefully prepared. MosT of Them were very young and desirous of securing a greaT knowledge of which They had heard from Their elders. Fear resided in The hearTs of many, Tear of being salTed, for They were freshmen. AfTer aTTending Draper Tor nearly six monThs a sigh oT boTh relief and disappoinTmenT escaped Them. They were relieved aT noT being salTed and disappoinTed aT noT finding ouT exacTly whaT iT was. One could easily have separaTed This group from The resT of The school for The girls wore shorT dresses. and anklefs. As Tor Their hair, very IiTTIe of iT was acquainTed wiTh The hairdresser or even wiTh a curling iron. The boys were likewise a comical sighT wiTh Their knickers and unmanly hairdresses. The nexT Sepfember saw a remarkable change in These youngsTers. For They were no longer children, buT adulTs wiTh big heads and poinTed noses. The girls used makeup in a ver unbecoming manner and curled Their hair likewise. And The boys! How manly They Teif in Their long panTs! WhaT a sophisTicaTed group These sophomores had become! SepTember l935 saw a serious group of savanTs who were earnesTly discussing The elecfion which broughT Torfh ThaT greaT presidenT, Frank La PoinTe. besides vice- presidenT, John Kelly. and secreTary. DoroThy Gordon. AlThough The Juniors waiTed unTil The following March To hold Their TirsT big money making aTfair. a Jinx Dance, The profiTs proved well worTh waiTing for. ln May came The long awaiTed Junior Prom. The junior year was so successful boTh poliTically and financially ThaT The seniors of '36 declared They were proud To leave The leadership of Draper To such an aspiring group. The sighT seen by SepTember I936 was enTirely diTferenT from ThaT of iTs prede- cessors. This Time iT saw a defermined group of business men and women who sTarTed The year oTT wiTh a bang wiTh a Hallowe'en Dance. WiTh The sTarT of cold weaTher The TradiTional soup sales and cafeTerias sTarTed which Ted The school The greaTer parT of The winfer. ln December The domineering seniors held a very successful Chrisfmas parfy. Following The usual ChrisTmas vacaTion wrinkles appeared in many brows for The January exams promised To be unusually difTiculT. Affer exams which roved quiTe successful The usual carefree aTTiTude again reigned. An elecTion foniowed which sTarTled everyone. Hazel Scheels was elecTed presidenf of The senior class. supporfed by Two oTher girls, Thelma Craig, vice-presidenT. and Dorofhy Gordon. secreTary. This was an innovaTion for Draper To have The girls in power, ConTinuing The annual cusTom of a spring dance The seniors held a Spring Frolic early in April. . The class play, held in December. proved To be The mosf successTul financial underTaking oT The year. IT was Truly one of The greaTesT Tribufes To The class of '37. AT presenT The seniors are fervenfl working on The Senior Ball which will be held in The l'loTel Van Curler. Eileen Sibellis The chairman of The general commiTTee in charge. However The seniors also have a serious inTellecTual side. They are making plans for The graduaTion exercises Wednesday. June 23. Also in planning Tor graduaTion The seniors are spending more Time on Their sTudies. FRIEDA DIAMOND HisTorian - Y i i' hz.. - az: li BQ , N 'N KX EENIIJRE k . l .
