Learning Experience Maturity is the ability to control anger and settle differences without violence or destruction Maturity is patience. It is the willingness to pass up immediate pleasure in favor of the long term gain. Maturity is perserverance, the ability to sweat out a project or a situation despite heavy opposition and discouraging setbacks. Maturity is the capacity to face unpleasantness and frustration, discomfort and defeat, without complaint or collapse. Maturity is humility. It is being big enough to say I was wrong. 3 Maturity is the ability to make a decision and stand by it.

University Government At Drake University The internal governing body of Drake University is the University Senate. The unique things about government at Drake University is that it brings all sectors of the campus together to form a community government. Eighty students, faculty and administrative staff members serve as voting members of the Senate. Of that eighty, nineteen are students including the president and vice-president of the student body, one representative from each college and eight members elected at large. Student body elections for these offices are held each spring. All legislative matters of the University are handled by the Senate and students sit on all of the committees, except one. Students hold exclusive membership on two committees: the Student Rights Committee and the Academic Research Committee. Within the jurisdiction of the Senate are the establishment of University-wide educational policy, the enactment of academic regulations, recommendations of special actions to the president and Board of Trustees and the establishment of policies concerning student life, extra-curricular activities, athletics, publications, human rights, admissions, financial aids, library services, computer services, and international education. Freshmen students are invited and encouraged to observe the monthly Senate meetings and to apply for committee memberships. Applications are available in the Student Activi- ties Center in Olmsted Center. This year, the Student Body President will be conducting a New College course in the area of 'tStudent Government at Drake. Students will be able to find out about involvement at Drake and also participate in projects to benefit the Drake community. ln some colleges, it will be possible to receive one hour of college credit for taking this course. If you are interested, see me or stop by at my office in the Student Activities Center. Involvement is the key to making Drake a better place. The University Senate and its com- mittees are one way to make things happen. l hope that you will look into this segment of Drake and make those things happen while you are here. And if you ever have any prob- lems, concerns or suggestions, never hesitate to stop by and share them with me or any of the student senators. They are your representatives. Together we can achieve.
