and Still More Football JAY COOKMAN Guard DEN NY FORD LH Another new-look item was the appearance of a new schedule, with many changes over the usual procedure and opponents. Traditional rival lowa State was moved to the first game on the schedule and pre-game optimists looked for a close contest due to Drake's new offense. Rain damp- ened the contest and stalled Drake's new offense, while the Cyclones ground out a 41-O triumph. D'rake's new uniforms were baptized with mud. Rain continued to hamper the Bulldogs as Central Michigan, a new team on the schedule, turned loose a flotilla of fleet backs and floated to a Al-21 victory. lowa State Teachers College was the next visitor to Drake's mud bowl as they slipped and slid to a ld-6 decision, adding to the rain-soaked, mud-splattered misery of the Bulldogs. Saint Ambrose returned to the Drake schedule for the first time since T943 and provided the heart-break of the year as they scored a touchdown and a two point conversion in the last T3 seconds to nip Drake's victory hopes, 23-22. Travel proved an inspiration as the Drake eleven took to the road for their first visitors' appearance of the year and also their first victory as they made themselves unwelcome before a Bradley crowd. Frigid Festivities . . . Cool, Mon! An Arctic Homecoming Uninvited guests - snow, ice, and freezing temperatures - accompanied the parents, alums, and friends who 'braved the weather to attend Drake's 1959 Homecoming-Parents Weekend, November 6-7. Bundled and booted decorators hammered, nailed, painted, and papier-mached desperately as frost-bitten fingers raced against time to complete decorations for iudging. Although a blanket of snow made many displays resemble white wastes, iudges could see enough to select the decoration win- ners, which were: Sorority First- Alpha Xi Delta Second - Alpha Phi Fraternity First- Tau Kappa Epsilon Second - Alpha Tau Omega Independent First- Kappa Psi Second - Women's Inter-Dormitory Council Chilly weather didn't hamper Homecoming Queen cam- paigns, either, as loyal backers smothered the campus in posters, signs, and fliers, as candidates doffed coats for the campus parade, and as voters hustled to the Student Union to cast their ballots . . . and we do mean ballots. Among the visitors who faced icy highways to attend Drake's Homecoming-Parents Weekend were honored guests Mr. and Mrs. Wilber Sackett, Parents of the Year, from Spencer, Iowa. Although cold weather canceled the traditional Homecom- ing pep rally, it couldn't overcome the warmth of the Val-Air, where the pre-game dance, featuring Richard Maltby's band, was held. . . . and the band played on.
