Free for a Day Skip Day's Feeble Demands Still Get Day Off Go, team, ga! Ah, the spirit. A drop, a drizzle - the deluge! Drake floods the Capitol. Exhaustion, headaches, and muddy sneaks ended another hectic Skip Day as students returned to the books 1hey'd discarded for the day.

E. Cokes being delivered by the gallons! Hot dogs are piled sky high! I've heard there's no class Mon- day! How the rumor flew! After winning the Brad- ley game, high hopes and hunches were everywhere. An ll o'clock meeting of S.F.C. confirmed it for sure. The few unbelievers who ventured to class were accompanied by those adorned for the day. Burmudas, sweatshirts, old clothes, and jeans were hidden under concealing trench coats in poorly-at- tended labs. . But sack-time was foremost in many more minds. Skip Day dawn was seen by few. The Ad Building saw even fewer. Demands were made with feeble support. The ever-loyal band played on. The day was officially proclaimed. One, two, three, the band - then blocks of cars streamed to the Capitol. Boistrous singing, gaudy chanting, and a calm official welcome followed the winding car caravan. The gallons of coke and the piles of hot dogs were handed out by. mustard-dipped shirt sleeves belong- ing to professors. The Union swarmed with skippers, buzzing over afternoon plans about the movie in the Ad auditorium, the party at the fraternity house, or the picnic on the edge of town.

More Roin More Football DAVE READI NGER End 'Y BOB REID Guard The Year . Drake's football team found the 1959 season a dismal one, both recordwise and weatherwise. Rain and a poorly surfaced field turned the Stadium into a sea of mud for all five home games. A Advanced publicity tabbed the Bulldogs as a new-look team as they prepared for the season's opener at their training headquarters at Camp Dodge. New Head Coach Tommy O'Connell, former star quarterback for the Cleve- land Browns and at the University of Illinois, was install- ing a pro-type offense, new to the followers of Drake football. Also new were assistant coaches Ellis Rainsberger, former Kansas State lineman, and Dick Olson, former Navy center and Captain of the l953 Middle team. Many new faces appeared in the Drake line-up due to a fine group of sophomores up from last year's freshman team and the fact that competition ran high for positions. During the season, different players started at one time or another and some players played two or three different positions.
