Some upperclassmen had more to offer than ad- vice. Beanie, anyone? Orientation Week Freshman Gerrie Pukis is shown on the left as she makes a get-acquainted tour of Stalnaker dorm, her new home at Drake. Gerrie, who hails from Westchester, Illinois, is in the College of Liberal Arts. Like other freshmen, she had a busy schedule during orientation week. Freshmen gather for the first orientation meeting. Close by were the upperclassmen to guide new students through the opening days. September came, and with it, the start of college again. For Drake, it meant the enrollment of 1200 freshmen, but to those freshmen, Drake meant confusion and bewilderment. Unpacking, new faces, too many instructions and numerous ques- tions made up the freshman's first frenzied days, but as the days passed, the directions became habit and the once unfamiliar faces became best friends. Familiar faces, but not best friends, were the D Club members. At first, these D men were easy for the freshmen to spot, for with outstretched hands, they were always ready to sell a beanie or apply that unwanted lipstick D on a forehead. Prowling the campus at unexpected hours, they caused many a freshman girl to go into a spin.
