Queen's Pageant Added ln Early Thirties The Drake Relays Queen Pageant began in i934 with Martha Stull of Northwestern Uni- versity the first ruler. The pageant met with such popular approval that it has been a tra- dition to have a queen reigning over each Relay. Through the years a parade and dance were also added to the festivities. At the Drake Relays in l95l, Drake's rampant young spikers forgot that they were hosts at the big meet and fairly ran the opposition out of the stadium. It was a meet in which all kinds of records were being broken, A five-man unit comprised of Jim Ford, George Nichols, Ray Eiland, Jim Lavery and Gary Scott, with Jack Kelly taking Nichols' place in the 880-yard relay, accomplished a feat rare in the history of the Drake Relays. They won the top three relays, which include the 440, 880 and mile relays. lt was definitely the most victorious and the most prominent year for Drake in the history of the Relays. And today, as in the past, the Drake Relays represents a monument to good sportsman- ship, teamwork and inter-school relations.
