Olson Uakota, North Dakotal PAINTING BY ARTIST, MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CONGREGATION Bethlehem Lutheran of Doyon is an old congregation in this community. It was organized on April 16, 1892. The Golden Iubilee anniversary was held October 11, 1942. The old faithful pioneers deserve much praise and credit for the vision they had in establishing the church, not only here in North Dakota, but throughout the whole nation. Names like: Paul Iverson, John Berg, Ole Anderson, Andrew Anderson, and John Rudrud as first officers of the congre- gation, as well as other early settlers both men and women, were prominent in the early beginnings of Bethlehem Lutheran church. It was in 1903 that Mrs. Charlie Doyon donated the present lot and erection was begun on a church building, previous to this services were held in farm homes. At these meetings a complete order of service was not usually held, but from these Opbyggelses gatherings much inspiration was set in motion for building the Kingdom of God on these prairies. Realizing the need for a larger church edifice, the congregation began thinking about expanding the seating capacity as well as providing for a church parlor. From the 50th anniversary bulletin we quote: The aim of the congregation is to build a new basement as soon as material can be ob- tained. As the nation was at war at this time it was almost out of question to start this project. However a building fund was established in the Ladies Aid, and this cause was remembered in other ways too. In the work of the church, if we continue to pray, to give and to keep up the interest in the worthiness of the task the project will materialize--and that is the case here in Doyon. In 1946, the old Catholic Church at Bartlett was purchased and moved into Doyon. This initial step set the whole project in motion: excavation was made for a basement and concrete blocks laid for the walls, the Catholic church was sawed in two and one half used for the front entry and other half for the chancel and sacristy. A new automatic oil furnace was purchased, fluorescent lighting in the chancel area was installed, bringing out the sublime beauty of the fine altar picture. We are finding much use for the well equipped church parlors, with the new electricrange, the built in cupboards and the fluorescent lights.
